So, back in 1912, when the Titanic hit that infamous iceberg, things got chaotic real quick. The ship scraped against the ice, and that friction caused some serious damage. Now, here's the kicker: when metal rubs against metal like that, it creates this distinct metallic smell. So, all those passengers probably caught a whiff of it as the ship's hull got torn up. It's like when you accidentally scratch your car against a pole – that smell tells you something ain't right. Sadly, for the Titanic, it was a whole lot worse than a scratch. Credit:

00:00The Royal Mail Ship, or RMS Titanic, easily the most famous steamship in history, was
00:07once the symbol of luxury and dreams that promised to come true.
00:12It took 3 years and 3,000 people to construct it.
00:15On April 10, 1912, the brand-new ocean liner greeted its passengers with the smell of fresh
00:22varnish, paint, and newly sawn wood.
00:25Back then, they still used lead for the production of paint and linseed oil as a binder, so that
00:30smell must've been powerful.
00:33When it was fully operational, the giant vessel consumed around 850 tons of coal per day,
00:39and the passengers would also smell its fumes.
00:43Another odor that must've filled the Titanic's decks, at least the first-class ones, was
00:48the new scent by the famous French perfume house Guerlain.
00:52It was released earlier in the same year and quickly became a hit with the well-off
00:56ladies.
00:57The perfume that you can still buy today is a mix of violets and iris with creamy vanilla.
01:04On the dramatic evening of April 14, when Titanic only had hours to live, the unknowing
01:10waiters were serving oysters, lamb and mint sauce, roast duck with applesauce, and other
01:16delicacies to their first-class guests.
01:19The second-class was filled with the smells of curried chicken, spring lamb, and roast
01:24turkey.
01:25Third-class passengers had simple gruel and biscuits that night.
01:29At 11 pm, as the ship got dangerously close to the iceberg, the new smell added to the
01:35mix.
01:36It was a mineral odor with metallic notes.
01:39If you have ice in your fridge, you must've noticed it takes the smell of neighboring
01:44foods.
01:45The same happens to icebergs.
01:47They take on the odors of sea animals and maintain the chemical composition of the water
01:52that they're made of.
01:53If more people had known about the meaning of this particular metallic smell, they probably
01:58still wouldn't have saved the ship, but the number of people that managed to escape
02:02the safety could've been larger.
02:07Speaking of smells, in case you've ever wondered what space smells like but aren't
02:12planning to become an astronaut any time soon, listen up.
02:15You can try out Eau de Space, an aroma that was designed by NASA decades ago.
02:21The idea of the perfume was to help astronauts prepare for their encounters with space at
02:26all levels during their training.
02:28But hold on a second, space is a vacuum, so it technically shouldn't have any smell.
02:34Yet astronauts who have been out there remembered it as a pleasant metallic odor, something
02:39like the smell of welding fumes or burnt gunpowder.
02:42They could smell it on their spacesuits.
02:45After coming back into their spacecraft.
02:47We can also guess what other planets smell like based on what their atmospheres are made
02:52of.
02:53Venus has clouds of sulfuric acid in its atmosphere, so it must smell like rotten eggs.
02:59Mars and Uranus also smell like rotten eggs, by the way.
03:03Each of the layers of Jupiter's atmosphere is made up of different chemicals.
03:07That's why it smells different depending on where you are.
03:11Some layers would greet you with a yummy aroma of bitter almonds or marzipan, and others,
03:16closer to the top, smell like cleaning products.
03:19The remaining planets of the Solar System are unlikely to have a distinctive scent because
03:24they're mostly odorless gases in their atmospheres.
03:28As for our natural satellite, the Moon, the Apollo astronauts claim that its dust smells
03:33like gunpowder.
03:36The fragrance of fresh-cut grass makes regular mowing it nearly worth it.
03:41But did you know that the grass isn't having a great time while you're doing it?
03:46In fact, it's sort of screaming for help.
03:48And because grass can't scream out loud, it expresses discomfort by releasing a mix
03:53of smelly volatile molecules.
03:56It does it to protect itself from insects.
03:58Caterpillars and other similar creatures just love to munch on sugary plant snacks.
04:04When you mow the grass, it releases jasmonic acid, among other things.
04:08It's sort of a signal to parasitic wasps that there is a caterpillar available.
04:13These creatures deal with the grass's offenders, and it can keep growing happily ever after.
04:18From the point of view of the grass, mowing is not much different from an insect attack,
04:23so it protects itself the best way it can.
04:28The rain has an easy-to-recognize powerful smell, also known as petrichor.
04:34But where does it come from?
04:36Turns out, some plants secrete oils during drought.
04:39The rocks and soil accumulate those oils' compounds, and when the raindrops hit, they
04:44mix with water and release into the air.
04:47Sometimes these oils combine with chemicals produced by bacteria living in the soil.
04:52The result of this cooperation is a musky odor you can smell in the woods or in your
04:56garden when you turn over the wet soil.
05:00Ozone also adds to the smell of rain, especially after thunderstorms.
05:04It happens when a lightning bolt's electrical charge splits oxygen and nitrogen molecules
05:09in the atmosphere, and they later recombine into ozone.
05:13One theory says we enjoy the aroma of rain so much because it's imprinted in our brains.
05:20Different cultures have always associated rain with something positive, and we could
05:24have inherited that perception.
05:28Chocolate fans, of which I am one, this is for you!
05:31There are flowers that smell exactly like your favorite tree.
05:34It's a product of a tropical plant, after all.
05:38And since it's impossible to recreate the exact magical scent chocolate has in a perfume,
05:43you can plant some chocolate flowers, also known as the green ilyra leaves, in your garden.
05:49These flowers look like daisies, with yellow petals around a deep red center.
05:54When you pick its petals, the flower releases the delicious smell we all love so much.
06:00The leaves and branches of the plant also have the same fragrance.
06:04In case I got you interested, you can find the flower in dry soils of Arizona, Texas,
06:09Colorado, and other states with similar climates.
06:12It blooms all year, and the aroma is strongest on warm days.
06:18The bearcat, also known as the bitturong, does not only look super cute, but also smells
06:24like buttered popcorn.
06:26Bitturongs prefer to stay alone and use their aroma to mark their territory and find potential
06:31partners when they have to.
06:33Scientists tried to figure out the secret of their unusual smell and suggested it could
06:37come from secretions from the scent glands under the animal's tail.
06:42Further research showed that the popcorn's smell comes from the bearcat's urine.
06:47After the animal answers nature's call, it leaves a scent trail in the trees with
06:51its tail that often gets soaked.
06:53But if the real popcorn only releases its amazing smell when it's popping under heat,
06:59how do bearcats manage to do it without a microwave?
07:03The answer could be in their diet, or, more likely, in the bacteria that come in contact
07:08with the animal's natural fluid.
07:13Durian is a fruit popular in Southeast Asia that smells sweet and nice to some people,
07:18but to the majority, it's a mix of rotten onions and sweaty socks.
07:23The stench is so powerful that it's banned on public transportation and hotels in some
07:28countries.
07:29The secret of durian is its 44 odor-active components.
07:33The mix is so complex that you can never tell what it's going to smell like.
07:38And despite that horrible smell, durian is considered a delicacy and is used to make
07:43mostly sweet dishes like cakes and candy.
07:47There was a smelly incident involving durian at a library in Australia.
07:51The smell of rotting fruit in a cupboard has spread across the entire building through
07:56the air conditioning system.
07:58They mistook it for gas leakage and had to evacuate around 500 students and teachers.
08:03That stinks!
08:05Finally, if you've ever been to natural hot springs or went to see some geysers, you'll
08:10never forget the smell of hydrogen sulfide, or, less poetically, rotten eggs.
08:15It's actually not only yucky but also highly flammable.
08:20But it can also be quite useful.
08:22Most households in Iceland use geothermal springs as a source of hot water.
08:27Although it doesn't smell fresh, it's perfectly safe to drink, and the smell doesn't stay
08:32on your body after you take a shower.
08:34So there!
08:38That's it for today!
