00:01:26This is the Salton Sea in Southern California.
00:01:30A strange phenomenon in which nature has placed 400 square miles of salt water in the middle of an arid desert.
00:01:37In the desert close to the shore of the sea, the government has established one of its most important naval research bases.
00:01:45At the laboratory on the secluded south tip of the base, top-secret atomic experiments are carried out under rigid security controls.
00:01:54While at the airfield, planes working under the direction of the parachute test unit leave on daily missions for the jump area over the Salton Sea,
00:02:02where Navy personnel hit the silk in the government's continuous researching of parachutes to meet the ever-increasing demands of modern flight.
00:02:12On May 17th in the early afternoon, an earthquake occurred in the desert area.
00:02:18Its force was strong enough to be felt at the research base, even though its epicenter was 10 miles away in the wild rock formations 350 feet below the surface of the Salton Sea.
00:02:30However, less than two hours after the earthquake, the base was back to normal operating procedure.
00:02:36Lieutenant Hollister of the parachute test unit was preparing to make the last scheduled jump of the day.
00:02:42Hollister was a veteran of over 300 test flights, and for him this was to be one more routine jump.
00:02:52Meanwhile, on the Salton Sea, Truman Johnson and Sanders were headed out to meet Lieutenant Hollister, and for them this was to be one more routine pickup.
00:03:04This is Flutterboy 242 calling Navy 87. You are now in sight. Over.
00:03:09Hollister now preparing to jump. Over and out.
00:03:34He's down.
00:03:50Navy 87. Navy 87. This is Flutterboy 242. Over.
00:03:54This is Navy 87. Over.
00:03:56We have him in sight. You're cleared to return to the base. Over.
00:03:59Roger. Leaving for home. Over and out.
00:04:07Flutterboy 242 calling Land Radio 4. Over.
00:04:11Land Radio 4. Come in.
00:04:13Jumper landed safely. He's down about two miles in off the southeast tip.
00:04:18That's pretty far out. Hope this doesn't take all night.
00:04:21Yeah, I'll call you back.
00:04:50Where is he?
00:05:01I don't know. He's got to be here. I saw him hit.
00:05:04Hey, Lieutenant!
00:05:06Hey!
00:05:07I'm going down for him.
00:05:21You see him?
00:05:22No. I'll try the other side.
00:05:42Johnson?
00:05:46Johnson!
00:05:50Johnson!
00:05:53Johnson!
00:05:58Ah!
00:06:00Ah!
00:06:02Ah!
00:06:10This is Land Radio 4 calling Flutterboy 242. Come in, please.
00:06:22Land Radio 4 calling Flutterboy 242. Come in.
00:06:28Come in, Flutterboy 242.
00:06:38El Centro Base. Naval Intelligence, please.
00:06:45Commander Twellinger's office.
00:06:47Well, he's on the other line.
00:06:49Okay, I'll put you on hold.
00:06:52Look, Lieutenant, I appreciate your calling, but there's nothing I can do about it.
00:06:55Your boy went AWOL, and it doesn't make any difference what the circumstances were.
00:06:58I'll have to refer the case.
00:07:00Now, wait a minute.
00:07:01In the one week that I've been on this base, I've had a dozen different cases come up.
00:07:05I don't decide these things. I'm an investigating officer, not a judge.
00:07:09All right, I'll send you notification.
00:07:12Twill, I know this guy. He's all right.
00:07:14He made a mistake, but he sure did.
00:07:16Commander, Wyatt on three.
00:07:19Wyatt?
00:07:20He's our radio man at the Salton Sea Pier.
00:07:23Twellinger?
00:07:24Yes, Wyatt.
00:07:27How long ago was that?
00:07:28Forty-five minutes.
00:07:31No, sir, I've lost radio contact, and it's not a mechanical failure, at least not at this end.
00:07:35All right, have a boat standing by. I'll be there in five minutes.
00:07:38Trouble?
00:07:39No, the last pickup crew hadn't reported in. We'll have to go out.
00:07:42Sally, wait until I call you.
00:07:43Yes, sir.
00:07:47Still there, Mom?
00:07:49Well, it looks like Ironheart's going to work late again tonight.
00:07:52That's right, Mom.
00:08:00Stop.
00:08:16I don't see why they weren't covered for something like this.
00:08:19They jump close to 20 men every day, Twill.
00:08:21It's a good system. Nothing goes wrong.
00:08:24Something went wrong this time.
00:08:26We're off the port bow, sir.
00:08:35She looks deserted. Head up alongside.
00:08:57It's Sanders.
00:09:00Check the water for the other men.
00:09:02Yes, sir.
00:09:20Bam.
00:09:22Look at this.
00:09:26What is it?
00:09:28I don't know. You better take a sample.
00:09:30We'll have the lab run a test.
00:09:34Commander, there's something surfacing on the port side.
00:09:49It's Hollister.
00:09:56Let's go.
00:10:06So, like I told you, sir, he said he'd call me back later, and that was all.
00:10:09And that's when you lost contact?
00:10:11Yes, sir. That's when I called the base.
00:10:12When you talked to them last, was everything normal?
00:10:14Oh, yes, sir. We was just kidding. You know how you get talking on the phones.
00:10:17That's against regulations, sailor.
00:10:19Oh, yes, sir.
00:10:20Have a report in my office in the morning.
00:10:22Yes, sir.
00:10:23Do you have that sample we took off the boat?
00:10:24Oh, right here.
00:10:25How long's that autopsy on Hollister gonna take?
00:10:27We should have it early tomorrow.
00:10:29I'll cover it for you.
00:10:30Take a couple of divers and go after Johnson's body in the morning.
00:10:33It's too late to dive now.
00:10:34Okay. I want to take this to the lab.
00:10:36Oh, it's that building right there.
00:10:37You go through the main door at the end of the building and turn to your right.
00:10:40I've already spoken to Dr. Rogers.
00:10:41Good.
00:10:43We won't need you anymore, Wyatt.
00:10:45Thank you, sir.
00:10:47That's your new boss?
00:10:48Yeah.
00:10:49Sure is an eager beaver.
00:10:52Sir?
00:10:53Yeah, that he is.
00:11:03Oh, you might know I've been making eight carbons.
00:11:05Hmm?
00:11:06I said I'm always making eight carbons and my fingers go to...
00:11:09Oh, hello.
00:11:10Is this Dr. Rogers' office?
00:11:12Yes.
00:11:13I'm Commander Twillinger.
00:11:14I'll tell him you're here.
00:11:15I think you were notified that I was coming.
00:11:18I was sorry to hear about the accident.
00:11:21Young lady, you're not to discuss that with anyone.
00:11:23Do you understand?
00:11:24No, of course not.
00:11:29I'm Dr. Rogers, Commander.
00:11:31Twillinger.
00:11:32Lieutenant Clemens tells me you have a substance you want analyzed.
00:11:35I do.
00:11:36It's in here.
00:11:37Oh.
00:11:38Well, come on. Let's take a look at it.
00:11:42Where did you find this?
00:11:43On the boat near the body.
00:11:45Lieutenant Clemens told me what happened.
00:11:47I'm terribly sorry.
00:11:48Yeah, we've lost three men so far.
00:11:50At least we think it's three.
00:11:52We've only recovered two of the bodies.
00:11:54Lieutenant said there was something unnatural about the condition of one of the bodies.
00:11:58There was.
00:11:59It was shriveled.
00:12:01Shriveled?
00:12:02Well, sometimes sea water does strange things to human flesh.
00:12:07In this case, I don't think so.
00:12:09Would you say that the water in the sea could be radioactive?
00:12:15Commander, let me answer you in this way.
00:12:17My two assistants do a lot of diving related to our work.
00:12:20Yes, I know that.
00:12:21We don't take any chances with radioactivity.
00:12:25Our experiments in the sea had nothing to do
00:12:27with what happened to your men or the condition of that body.
00:12:30You might be wrong, Doctor.
00:12:33Commander, I've found that people are always jumping to wild conclusions
00:12:36concerning atomic reaction.
00:12:38Science fact and science fiction are not the same.
00:12:42Not in the least.
00:12:43This will take a few minutes.
00:12:45Why don't you make it as fast as possible?
00:12:47It'll only take a little while, as long as I'm not interrupted.
00:12:50I'll wait outside.
00:12:53I'm returning your child, Gail, in the same condition as when I got her.
00:12:56I think.
00:12:57Hi, sweetie.
00:12:58Hi, Mommy.
00:13:00Excuse me.
00:13:01It's all right.
00:13:02Mommy, may I go look at the rabbits?
00:13:04Not today, sweetie.
00:13:05Please.
00:13:07Mommy, of all those rabbits, I like Grace the best.
00:13:11Well, you can't see her today.
00:13:13It's okay.
00:13:14I've got a ladybug to keep me company.
00:13:16Gail, when will the boys be finished?
00:13:18They got tied up because of the earthquake and had to reset all the tests.
00:13:21Oh.
00:13:23Hey!
00:13:24Two minutes.
00:13:25Your wife and unborn child are starving.
00:13:27A minute and a half.
00:13:31What a life.
00:13:33Did I ever tell you that I detest this lab?
00:13:36That husband of mine even has top secrets stamped in red ink
00:13:39right in the middle of his chest.
00:13:41Oh, Connie.
00:13:42He does.
00:13:43Secret, secret, secret.
00:13:46You can't speed up science, Commander.
00:13:49No, I guess not.
00:13:51Would you like to hold my ladybug?
00:13:53Hmm?
00:13:54I said, would you like to hold my ladybug?
00:13:57Most certainly.
00:13:58It's a privilege.
00:13:59Honey, don't bother the Commander.
00:14:02Oh, it's all right.
00:14:04Why, doesn't she have pretty spots on her back?
00:14:06Yes, she has.
00:14:08Commander.
00:14:09It's just a simple marine secretion.
00:14:11Although, there is something about it that does puzzle me.
00:14:14I'd like to run another series of tests on her tomorrow.
00:14:16I'll call you, huh?
00:14:17I'll wait for your call.
00:14:19Oh.
00:14:20You can get me on 254.
00:14:21254?
00:14:22That's right.
00:14:24My ladybug.
00:14:25You forgot my ladybug.
00:14:29Maybe it's on the floor somewhere.
00:14:32Don't worry about it, Commander.
00:14:34Sandy, you can find another ladybug.
00:14:36But I don't want another ladybug.
00:14:38I don't want another one, Mommy.
00:14:40I tell you what, Sandy.
00:14:41When I get home, I'll look around and see if I can find her.
00:14:44If I do, I'll bring her back.
00:14:45Okay?
00:14:46Okay.
00:14:52He's cute.
00:14:54I guess so.
00:14:56Did you mention that you were available?
00:14:58Somehow, it didn't come up in the conversation.
00:15:00If I were you, it would have.
00:15:02Oh, her character.
00:15:03You ready to go home now, Sandy?
00:15:05I guess so.
00:15:06I'm leaving now, Doctor.
00:15:10Night.
00:15:13Excuse me.
00:15:14That's okay.
00:15:15Just consider me a piece of furniture.
00:15:23Sandy.
00:15:24Hey.
00:15:25Come here.
00:15:26Look.
00:15:27I got a surprise for you.
00:15:29I found her for you.
00:15:32I'll give her a good talking to.
00:15:34Oh, now, I wouldn't be too severe on her.
00:15:37Thank you very much.
00:15:38You're welcome.
00:15:43Well, goodbye.
00:15:45Goodbye.
00:16:05Commander Twillinger?
00:16:06That's right.
00:16:07I'm Nate Brown.
00:16:08How do you do?
00:16:09I think you know Josh Peters from the Sheriff's Office.
00:16:11Yes, we've met.
00:16:12I've been with this office for 15 years,
00:16:14but I've never seen anything like this.
00:16:16Have you, Josh?
00:16:17Afraid not.
00:16:18I've seen a lot of people die in a lot of different ways.
00:16:20What caused it?
00:16:21It's hard to tell.
00:16:22A puncture wound.
00:16:23A puncture wound?
00:16:24Yes.
00:16:25It's a very common wound.
00:16:26It's a very common wound.
00:16:27It's a very common wound.
00:16:28It's a very common wound.
00:16:29It's a very common wound.
00:16:30It's a very common wound.
00:16:31It's a very common wound.
00:16:32It's a very common wound.
00:16:33A puncture wound, I think.
00:16:34Both bodies taken from the sea
00:16:36were completely drained of blood and water.
00:16:38What would make that happen?
00:16:40I have no idea.
00:16:41The wound could have been made by any sharp object
00:16:43and naturally the body would bleed.
00:16:45But simple bleeding wouldn't cause this.
00:16:48You say it happened near the research lab?
00:16:50Yes, but they say there's no connection.
00:16:52Maybe.
00:16:53Take a look at the microscope.
00:16:59Now, you're looking at a piece of skin.
00:17:01Usually, when a body is submerged in water,
00:17:03the epidermal tissues become swollen.
00:17:05But this, this is like leather.
00:17:07Doesn't even resemble human skin anymore.
00:17:09Why, skin on a man over 100
00:17:11would have three times the amount of moisture.
00:17:13What about the other man?
00:17:14The man we found on the boat?
00:17:16A stroke.
00:17:17A stroke?
00:17:18There's a technical name for it,
00:17:20but that's what it amounts to.
00:17:21I don't understand you.
00:17:23What could cause a stroke in a man that young?
00:17:26As far as we know, in that age group,
00:17:28only two things could cause a stroke.
00:17:30Violent anger or fear.
00:17:32Well, you can rule out anger.
00:17:34Mm-hmm.
00:17:35In my opinion, the man you found on the boat
00:17:37was literally scared to death.
00:17:40Josh, do you have enough deputies
00:17:42to post a complete quarantine on all the beaches?
00:17:44At least until we find out what happened out there.
00:17:46Yeah, I'll get right on it.
00:17:48Good.
00:17:49Well, thanks again for your help.
00:17:51Not at all.
00:17:53Oh, you boys care for a sandwich?
00:18:01Got tuna fish and minced ham on rye.
00:18:04No thanks.
00:18:07It's nice and cold.
00:18:20What do you mean, closing off the beach?
00:18:22I got 22 people staying here.
00:18:24I'm sorry, we've got orders.
00:18:25Nothing we can do about it.
00:18:26That's fine, that's swell.
00:18:27So everybody should go home, is that it?
00:18:29Did you take a good look at the temperature today?
00:18:31Yes, sir, we know it's hot.
00:18:32120 at 3 o'clock, so nobody swims.
00:18:35What's wrong with the water?
00:18:36We got a bulletin, Mr. Davis, that's all we know.
00:18:39Okay.
00:18:40Okay.
00:18:46PHONE RINGS
00:18:48Dr. Rogers' office.
00:18:50Oh, yes, Commander.
00:18:52Just a moment.
00:18:53Just a moment.
00:18:57Dr. Rogers, Commander Twillinger in line one.
00:19:03Yes, Commander.
00:19:04Yes.
00:19:06Yes, we're working on it.
00:19:08We hope to come up with something late this afternoon or tomorrow.
00:19:11Tomorrow?
00:19:12Look, Doctor, that's the only clue we've got.
00:19:14I could have sent it to San Diego by now.
00:19:16Now, hold on, Commander.
00:19:17Don't pressure us.
00:19:18We don't need it.
00:19:19I'll call you just as soon as I finish.
00:19:21I'll be in my office.
00:19:24THUD
00:19:26Well, I've just been read the riot act by a young friend from Naval Intelligence.
00:19:30Don't let him bother you.
00:19:31I'll give you a character reference.
00:19:35I'm ready to run a Geiger count on that stuff they sent us from Los Alamos.
00:19:38Good, go ahead.
00:19:43That's strange.
00:19:45Is that the stuff from the boat?
00:19:47Yeah.
00:19:48What's it registered for?
00:19:49.15.
00:19:50What's your last reading on the Salton Sea?
00:19:52Normal, .034, constant.
00:19:56That's odd.
00:19:57The sample's from the same water.
00:19:58Why the difference in the radioactivity?
00:20:05We'd better run a check test.
00:20:23THUD
00:20:29Hello, Larry.
00:20:30Mrs. Simms?
00:20:31Bob?
00:20:33Oh, what'll it be?
00:20:34I'd like to talk to you about your beach.
00:20:36About my beach?
00:20:37I'm going now, Ma.
00:20:38All right.
00:20:39Oh, Jody.
00:20:41Jody.
00:20:42Yes?
00:20:45Who are you going out with?
00:20:46You know.
00:20:47I said who?
00:20:49Morty.
00:20:50Morty.
00:20:52Oh, sure, I might have known.
00:20:54I've got nothing against servicemen, but that Morty's no good.
00:20:57You hear that, Jody?
00:20:58I hear.
00:21:00Ma, look at me.
00:21:02I'm a big girl now, grown up.
00:21:04Can't you understand that?
00:21:06You don't want to pay any attention to your mother anymore.
00:21:08That isn't what I mean.
00:21:09I don't want to hurt you.
00:21:11But there are times when I've just got to use my own judgment about things.
00:21:14It has to be that way.
00:21:16Please try to understand.
00:21:18All right.
00:21:19Just you get home early.
00:21:22I will.
00:21:24I've got a terrible headache.
00:21:26I'm sorry, Ma.
00:21:27Good night.
00:21:28Now, you were saying?
00:21:29About your beach, Mrs. Simms.
00:21:31I'm afraid you'll have to close it up temporarily.
00:21:33No swimming.
00:21:49Mort?
00:21:51Mort?
00:21:53Where you been?
00:21:54Ma, she's...
00:21:59Ma, what?
00:22:00Nothing.
00:22:01She's screaming at everybody tonight.
00:22:03Forget it.
00:22:08Pretty girl.
00:22:11Hey, pretty girl.
00:22:12Where's your suit?
00:22:13Underneath, silly.
00:22:16It's sure a beautiful night.
00:22:20Did you get a look at that moon?
00:22:42Catch me.
00:22:45Come on.
00:23:06Come on.
00:23:07I'll race you to the float.
00:23:08You haven't got a chance.
00:23:15Come on.
00:23:20Mort?
00:23:23Morty?
00:23:25Morty?
00:23:29Mort?
00:23:36Mort?
00:23:46I'll tell you what happened.
00:23:48That boy ran off somewhere with Jody.
00:23:51I know it.
00:23:52He's no good.
00:23:53I warned her.
00:23:54I said, why don't you go out with a nice young man?
00:23:56But no, she's just like her father was.
00:23:59No sense.
00:24:00Mrs. Simms, the boy didn't report back to the base at all last night.
00:24:03Are you sure he was with your daughter?
00:24:05Of course I'm sure.
00:24:07Did you see him?
00:24:08I didn't have to see him.
00:24:10Jody herself told me she was going out with him.
00:24:12I'll put it as you please.
00:24:14And after all I've sacrificed and done for her, not a word of appreciation.
00:24:18Do you think that at least that she...
00:24:20Do you mind if we take a look around?
00:24:22No, go ahead.
00:24:24Her room's in there.
00:24:27Wait a minute.
00:24:28I don't care.
00:24:29Give it to me.
00:24:30It's mine.
00:24:31I found it.
00:24:33There's some kids out there with a sailor's cap.
00:24:35What?
00:24:36Some kids.
00:24:37What do kids got to do with it?
00:24:39I don't know.
00:24:41Give it two more.
00:24:42I don't care.
00:24:44Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:24:45Come here just a minute, son.
00:24:47Let me take a look at that cap.
00:24:50Did you find this cap?
00:24:51Yeah.
00:24:52That boy Freddy was trying to take it away from me.
00:24:55Where'd you find it?
00:24:56Over there.
00:24:58It don't belong to nobody.
00:25:00It don't belong to you, does it?
00:25:02No, it doesn't.
00:25:03But look, will you show me where you found this cap?
00:25:06Come on.
00:25:15There!
00:25:26What's that?
00:25:27The uniform of Mrs. Simms, or at least part of one.
00:25:30Tell me, did your daughter and her boyfriend ever swim here?
00:25:33Swimmer?
00:25:34I don't know.
00:25:35Well, you don't think they could have...
00:25:41Oh, Judy!
00:25:42Oh, Judy!
00:25:44Judy!
00:25:48Oh, baby!
00:25:50I can cut out my tongue for the things I said to you!
00:26:04Oh, baby!
00:26:09Josh!
00:26:11Josh!
00:26:13What's up?
00:26:14I don't know.
00:26:15But that's the same thing we found on the side of the boat.
00:26:19Dr. Rogers says it's highly radioactive.
00:26:23I better call and have him investigate the bottom of the sea...
00:26:26before somebody else is killed.
00:26:41Man, it's cold down there.
00:26:43I'll get Clark to get you some coffee.
00:26:45Do you want us to move out again?
00:26:47No, no, not yet.
00:26:48There's a rock formation.
00:26:49I want to check down there with a Geiger counter.
00:26:51As soon as I fix my regulator.
00:26:55Thanks.
00:26:57Any sign of them?
00:26:58Nothing.
00:26:59Those kids are probably off somewhere on a honeymoon.
00:27:01I hope so.
00:27:02That's it.
00:27:03Let's go.
00:27:04Let's go.
00:27:05Those kids are probably off somewhere on a honeymoon.
00:27:07I hope so.
00:27:09That's it.
00:27:10Thanks.
00:27:12Okay, let's go.
00:27:13Keep a sharp eye, will you?
00:27:15Believe me, doctor, we haven't seen a thing.
00:27:17Except a few fish the size of your left hand.
00:27:19Fine, I'll just be careful.
00:27:20Sure thing.
00:27:36How rough does it usually get?
00:27:38It depends on the wind.
00:27:39As a rule, there's not much current.
00:27:41Then if the bodies are down there, they should be easy to find.
00:27:44It should be, unless...
00:27:47Unless what?
00:27:49Well, I'd rather not conjecture.
00:28:06Okay?
00:28:07Yes, sir.
00:28:08We've got you on the frequency.
00:28:10Right.
00:28:11We're still descending.
00:28:13What's your depth?
00:28:15Forty feet.
00:28:25Sixty feet.
00:28:26We're leveling off.
00:28:28Good.
00:28:29Try a reading.
00:28:31Doctor, I'm now checking the rock formation.
00:28:34Reading is normal.
00:28:36Normal.
00:28:37Good.
00:28:38What's the bottom like?
00:28:45The bottom is normal.
00:28:46Good.
00:28:47What's the top like?
00:28:49It's normal.
00:28:50It's normal.
00:28:51Good.
00:28:52What's the bottom like?
00:28:53It's normal.
00:28:54Good.
00:28:55What's the bottom like?
00:28:56It's normal.
00:28:57Good.
00:28:58Doctor, about the same.
00:29:16We're going down again.
00:29:18It looks like there may be some kind of cave out under us.
00:29:30How deep are you?
00:29:31Eighty feet.
00:29:33Still dropping.
00:29:34Well, that's most unusual.
00:29:35Why?
00:29:36Well, we've been over this area a dozen times.
00:29:38The maximum depth is sixty-five feet.
00:29:41Don't take any chances.
00:29:45Ninety-seven feet.
00:29:51One hundred.
00:29:58One twenty-five.
00:30:09We've leveled off again.
00:30:11I think we're at the bottom of some kind of huge cavern.
00:30:14We see some kind of peculiar object ahead.
00:30:18Hang on.
00:30:41Doctor, I get a reading of 1.038.
00:30:56What is it?
00:30:57I'm not sure.
00:30:58Some kind of marine growth, I think.
00:31:00Circular, about six feet.
00:31:02Almost transparent.
00:31:03We'll try to cut him loose.
00:31:05I'll send down a net.
00:31:07Lower the net, boys.
00:31:37Okay.
00:31:38Take it up.
00:31:39Is everything all right?
00:31:40No problems.
00:31:41We're still looking.
00:31:42Hold off and come up until we check what's in the net.
00:31:43Okay.
00:31:45Okay.
00:31:46Take it up.
00:31:55Is everything all right?
00:31:57No problems.
00:31:58We're still looking.
00:32:00Hold off and come up until we check what's in the net.
00:32:03Okay.
00:32:15We found the girl.
00:32:32Can you get her up quickly?
00:32:36It'll only take a minute.
00:32:38Okay, but don't take any longer.
00:32:40My tank.
00:32:41My tank.
00:32:42What's wrong?
00:32:43Blake's tank is caught in the undergrowth.
00:32:44Do you need any help?
00:32:45No, we're okay.
00:32:46Blake!
00:32:47Blake!
00:32:48Blake!
00:32:49Blake!
00:32:50Blake!

00:32:56Blake!
00:32:57Blake!
00:32:58Blake!
00:32:59Blake!
00:33:00Blake!
00:33:01Blake!
00:33:02Blake!
00:33:03Blake!
00:33:04Blake!
00:33:05Blake!
00:33:06Blake!
00:33:07Blake!
00:33:08Blake!
00:33:09Blake!
00:33:10Blake!
00:33:11Blake!
00:33:12Blake!
00:33:13Blake!
00:33:14Blake!
00:33:15Blake!
00:33:16Blake!
00:33:17Blake!
00:33:18Blake!
00:33:19Blake!
00:33:20Blake!
00:33:21Blake!
00:33:22Blake!
00:33:23Blake!
00:33:24Blake!
00:33:25Blake!
00:33:26Blake!
00:33:27Blake!
00:33:28Blake!
00:33:29Blake!
00:33:30Blake!
00:33:31Blake!
00:33:32Blake!
00:33:34Blake!
00:33:40No!
00:33:44No!
00:33:45Johns!
00:33:47Johns!
00:33:50Answer me, Johns!
00:33:52I'm okay.
00:33:53Blake!
00:33:54It got Blake!
00:33:56What are you talking about?
00:33:58I'm coming up.
00:33:59Get help!
00:34:03Get help!
00:34:20What happened?
00:34:21Oh my God, his body.
00:34:22He died right in front of me.
00:34:24I couldn't help it.
00:34:25I've got to go back.
00:34:26Talk sense.
00:34:27What's down there?
00:34:28I don't know.
00:34:29I never saw anything like it before.
00:34:30Like what?
00:34:31A creature.
00:34:32Giant creature!
00:34:34You're not gonna go back down there.
00:34:36Take your hands off me! I've got to kill it!
00:34:38I said you're not gonna go back down there!
00:34:40Stay out of this, will you? I'll take care of him.
00:34:42We haven't got time for hysterics. He's got to tell us what we're fighting.
00:34:44I don't know.
00:34:46Was there just one of these creatures?
00:34:48I think so.
00:34:50There was a cave.
00:34:52Outside.
00:34:54That thing.
00:34:56An egg.
00:34:58That must be one of its eggs.
00:35:02Behind you!
00:35:22Behind! Behind! Get behind!
00:35:24Behind! Behind! Get behind!
00:35:54Keep those depth charges moving.
00:35:56Hurry it up, boys. We don't have much time.
00:35:58Commander Watson shall off in five minutes.
00:36:00The Pentagon is sending Admiral Greenhouse.
00:36:02He'll be here for the conference in the morning.
00:36:04Good. We're keeping the egg in the lab under close observation.
00:36:06We ought to know more about it by then.
00:36:08I've issued a press release to the effect that the Navy
00:36:10is conducting routine tests with underwater explosives.
00:36:12That should cover us for the moment.
00:36:14No sense in starting a panic.
00:36:16Excuse me, sir.
00:36:18They're about to finish loading the ship.
00:36:20I'm afraid so.
00:36:22Excuse me, sir.
00:36:24They're about finished loading. You want to take a look?
00:36:26It'll be about five minutes, Doctor.
00:36:28Excuse me, sir.
00:36:30Would you sign these, Doctor?
00:36:32Did you get a hold of Connie?
00:36:34No, but I left word for her to come down here.
00:36:38If you run into any problems, let us know.
00:36:40The Chief of Staff has authorized full cooperation.
00:36:42We'll see you in the morning.
00:36:44Thank you, Captain.
00:37:16Hey, what's going on?
00:37:18Did Mars finally invade us?
00:37:20Another secret?
00:37:22Where's George?
00:37:26Where's George?
00:37:28Connie, I...
00:37:30I couldn't help it.
00:37:32Where's George?
00:37:34What's happened to my husband?
00:37:36Connie, step in here for a moment.
00:37:46Where's Dr. Rogers?
00:37:48He's with Jack.
00:37:50He's with Connie.
00:37:54They're about ready to shove off.
00:37:56Leave them alone, please.
00:38:08Are you all right?
00:38:10I'm fine.
00:38:12I don't think you are.
00:38:14What's wrong?
00:38:16I don't know how you get over it.
00:38:18Trouble is, you don't.
00:38:20Guess what I mean is, I didn't.
00:38:22Do you like a cigarette?
00:38:24No, thank you.
00:38:26When Tom was killed, they said all those things to me.
00:38:28Tom?
00:38:30My husband.
00:38:32I'm sorry. I didn't know.
00:38:34It's funny.
00:38:36You go around for days, and you don't believe it.
00:38:38You think it can't be true.
00:38:40Then one of those days, you get to thinking it is true.
00:38:42He isn't coming home.
00:38:44Don't listen to me.
00:38:46I'm over it now. It was two years ago.
00:38:48It's just that I couldn't go in there with Connie.
00:38:50Not right now.
00:38:52What did your husband do?
00:38:54He was a pilot. He was stationed in San Diego.
00:38:56Sandy and I moved here afterwards.
00:39:00It takes a great deal of courage to start over.
00:39:02I had a lot of happiness.
00:39:04A lot of things to think about and remember.
00:39:06And I had Sandy.
00:39:08I couldn't fall apart.
00:39:10I guess not.
00:39:12You know something?
00:39:14You're easy to talk to.
00:39:16And I didn't think you would be.
00:39:18Gail?
00:39:20Yes, Doctor.
00:39:22Would you take care of Connie, please?
00:39:24Of course.
00:39:26We're waiting for you, Doctor.
00:39:28How is she?
00:39:30She's resting. She'll be all right.
00:39:36Len, Dr. Rogers has some final instructions for you.
00:39:38Everything that's happened today,
00:39:40or that will happen on this expedition,
00:39:42is classified top secret. Is that clear?
00:39:44Now, we've crippled,
00:39:46we may have killed this giant creature.
00:39:48To make sure it's dead,
00:39:50we're going to first saturate the entire area
00:39:52with death charges.
00:39:54But our most important job is to find all its eggs.
00:39:56And once they're located,
00:39:58Dr. Johns will make a quick survey of them,
00:40:00and then they must be totally destroyed.
00:40:02Commander Twillinger will be in charge
00:40:04of the underwater demolition.
00:40:06I guess that's all.
00:40:08All right, men. Let's go.
00:40:22Connie, believe me,
00:40:24I know it's best for you to stay here tonight.
00:40:26I've got plenty of room.
00:40:30What are they doing?
00:40:32Come on, Connie.
00:40:36What you see here is the formation
00:40:38inside the egg sac
00:40:40we found near the creature's lair.
00:40:42You'll notice the shell is already beginning to harden.
00:40:44There's quite a bit of definition in the head.
00:40:46Until our studies are completed,
00:40:48we're keeping it alive
00:40:50by controlled water temperature.
00:40:52You'll notice that the thermostat
00:40:54reads 38 degrees. Exactly.
00:40:56Is there any danger that the egg might hatch?
00:40:58Oh, no. The temperature is just low enough
00:41:00to keep it from hatching.
00:41:02And as long as this knob is set
00:41:04and the temperature remains constant,
00:41:06there'll be no problem. I see.
00:41:08Now, gentlemen, we believe that this creature
00:41:10is of the same family
00:41:12as the historically documented Kraken,
00:41:14a giant sea beast that was the direct ancestor
00:41:16of the modern water mollusk.
00:41:18I've had some film of some common mollusks
00:41:20flown in from San Diego.
00:41:22I'd like you gentlemen to take a look at it
00:41:24and compare it with the creature that attacked us.
00:41:26Doctor. John. Yes.
00:41:28Right this way, please.
00:41:30Sheriff, would you cut the lights, please?
00:41:36As most of you know,
00:41:38the mollusk family
00:41:40is comprised of animals
00:41:42with a soft body,
00:41:44usually covered by a hard shell.
00:41:46Well, this is
00:41:48Gonaxus kibwizensis.
00:41:50It's one-half inch in diameter.
00:41:52You'll note the remarkable similarities
00:41:54between it and the giant creature
00:41:56in the Salton Sea.
00:41:58For example, the Gonaxus
00:42:00has a predatory nature.
00:42:02It attacks other living creatures,
00:42:04will devour them,
00:42:06eat their flesh.
00:42:08The larger it is,
00:42:10the larger its appetite.
00:42:12This is a branch of the Gonaxus,
00:42:14the Euglandia.
00:42:16It shreds the flesh of its victim
00:42:18with scissor-like teeth.
00:42:20Some species suck out the body fluids
00:42:22in much the same manner
00:42:24as the creature with which we're dealing.
00:42:26As I mentioned,
00:42:28most of these creatures live entirely in the water.
00:42:30But it's not unusual
00:42:32to find them on land,
00:42:34searching for food.
00:42:36The same thing is true of our Kraken.
00:42:40These mollusks
00:42:42are only recently hatched.
00:42:44Yet you'll observe they're as large as the adult,
00:42:46the reason being
00:42:48that they developed to full growth
00:42:50within the egg sac.
00:42:52From the instant they're born,
00:42:54that bubbly secretion you see
00:42:56is formed in the digestive system.
00:42:58It acts as a defensive weapon.
00:43:00Incidentally,
00:43:02it's chemically similar
00:43:04to the secretion we found on the boat.
00:43:08Well, that'll give you an idea.
00:43:10That's all very interesting, Doctor,
00:43:12but what's the point?
00:43:14The creature was killed,
00:43:16and Commander Twillinger reported
00:43:18that all the eggs were destroyed.
00:43:20That's right, sir.
00:43:22And how many creatures have developed?
00:43:24Oh, we're sure of it.
00:43:26The number of shells in these photographs,
00:43:28I'd say that there are at least
00:43:30ten of these giant creatures,
00:43:32each one, you understand, gentlemen,
00:43:34with the capacity to lay several thousand eggs
00:43:36in its life cycle.
00:43:38Now, there was a cave here, right here,
00:43:40which we sealed off with explosives
00:43:42and probably trapped the rest of them inside.
00:43:44We have to be sure, Doctor.
00:43:46Well, that's impossible now, Admiral,
00:43:48because the mouth of that cave
00:43:50will open sooner or later.
00:43:52It'll not find enough food in the Salton Sea.
00:43:54It'll get hungry.
00:43:56Well, we can keep a 24-hour beach patrol, Doctor.
00:43:58Yeah, yes, I think that's imperative.
00:44:00But our real danger doesn't lie at the sea, gentlemen.
00:44:02You must remember that these creatures
00:44:04can travel over land, too.
00:44:06Now, a few miles from here
00:44:08is the All-American Canal system,
00:44:10which irrigates the entire Imperial Valley
00:44:12and then, in time, empties into the Gulf.
00:44:14Now, I don't want to alarm you unduly,
00:44:16but if just one of these creatures lived
00:44:18and got by the patrols into the canal system
00:44:20and multiplied,
00:44:22the species could threaten the entire world,
00:44:24first devouring all life in the oceans
00:44:26and then foraging on land.
00:44:28Can you imagine
00:44:30an army of these things
00:44:32descending upon one of our cities?
00:44:34What caused them, Doctor? Where did they come from?
00:44:36We don't know. We can only guess.
00:44:38Now, perhaps you gentlemen saw this article here
00:44:40in Life.
00:44:42A few miles from here,
00:44:44this lake bed existed in a dry state,
00:44:46void of life for many years.
00:44:48Then a flash flood filled it with about two feet of water.
00:44:50In a few days,
00:44:52there were literally millions of shrimp in that lake.
00:44:54They hatched from dormant eggs
00:44:56that had been there for centuries.
00:44:58Now, I believe the same thing happened here.
00:45:00I think that a pocket of eggs
00:45:02from this prehistoric species
00:45:04was trapped here below the bottom of the Salton Sea.
00:45:06Suppose an earthquake
00:45:08caused a fissure to open
00:45:10at the bottom of the sea,
00:45:12allowing water to seep down to this pocket.
00:45:14And because this water was slightly radioactive
00:45:16and because the eggs had a capacity
00:45:18to absorb this radioactivity,
00:45:20they found an environment that was perfect
00:45:22in which to hatch and grow.
00:45:24And then a more severe earthquake
00:45:26widened the fissure,
00:45:28allowing these creatures to escape into the sea.
00:45:30I'd like to alert the civilian defense, Doctor.
00:45:32Mr. Patterson,
00:45:34there are 100,000 people in this valley.
00:45:36A move like that could only lead to hysteria.
00:45:38I suppose that's true.
00:45:40I think we should set up a joint patrol around the sea.
00:45:42Combine your staff with the Sheriff's office,
00:45:44set up a headquarters at the air base
00:45:46and coordinate things from there.
00:45:48Does that sound practical to you, Commander?
00:45:50Yes, sir.
00:45:52How about your office, Sheriff?
00:45:54Sounds fine to me.
00:45:56I'm due to report back to Joint Chiefs of Staff this afternoon.
00:45:58I'll tell them that even on the chance
00:46:00there may be some surviving creatures,
00:46:02there's still no national danger.
00:46:04Unless, as you said, Doctor,
00:46:06some escape from the Salton Sea into the All-American Canal.
00:46:08That's correct.
00:46:10Very good, sir. Good day, gentlemen.
00:46:12Good day.
00:46:14Doctor, the Governor advised me to offer you
00:46:16any assistance that you may need from us.
00:46:18We appreciate that very much, Mr. Patterson.
00:46:20Yes, Doctor.
00:46:22I think we'd better meet at my office and set this up.
00:46:24Okay.
00:46:26Good night.
00:46:28Good night.
00:46:30Oh, Gail.
00:46:32How's Connie?
00:46:34She's all right now. She's staying with me for a while.
00:46:36Good.
00:46:38I'm sorry about yesterday, Commander.
00:46:40Why?
00:46:42Well, the things I said yesterday, personal things,
00:46:44I hope I didn't embarrass you.
00:46:46You didn't.
00:46:48I don't usually carry on that way.
00:46:50Then you ought to, at least once in a while.
00:46:52Look, we're on our way back to the base now,
00:46:54but we have to eat sometime.
00:46:56What I mean is,
00:46:58why don't you let me take you to dinner tonight?
00:47:00I found a wonderful place to eat in Mexicali.
00:47:02Well, thank you, but I can't leave Connie.
00:47:04I mean, I shouldn't.
00:47:06I'm awfully sorry.
00:47:08Well, if you should, change your mind.
00:47:10I never do.
00:47:12Only if you should. The number's 254.
00:47:14254.
00:47:16You already have it.
00:47:18So I have.
00:47:20Good night.
00:47:22Good night.
00:47:36Good night.
00:47:52Anything happening, Scotty?
00:47:54Nothing.
00:47:56Nothing but moonlight.
00:47:58Well, Walz and Hans will replace you at 10 o'clock.
00:48:00Thanks.
00:48:02Okay.
00:48:04You know, last year we had a stakeout
00:48:06on a federal bank for three months.
00:48:08What happened?
00:48:10Not a thing.
00:48:12You sure you won't come home and take potluck?
00:48:14Jenny wouldn't mind.
00:48:16Much.
00:48:18No, come on.
00:48:20No, I'll get Sally to bring me up something from the cafeteria.
00:48:22Okay, see you later.
00:48:24Give me a minute.
00:48:26This is just like that federal bank stakeout last year.
00:48:28Yeah.
00:48:30The only trouble is nothing ever happens.
00:48:34No, Mom.
00:48:36No, Mom.
00:48:38Well, I don't know.
00:48:40Yes, I'll hurry.
00:48:42No, I don't know how late.
00:48:44This is Walker, Section 5 North.
00:48:46All clear. ONI.
00:48:48Check. ONI.
00:48:50Yes.
00:48:52ONI, Twillinger.
00:48:54Hi.
00:48:56I had to come to town with some reports for the doctor,
00:48:58and I thought, well, I know it's way past dinnertime,
00:49:00but if you haven't already eaten, I...
00:49:02Yeah, I'm starving.
00:49:04Where are you?
00:49:06Right. I know where it is.
00:49:08I'll be there in five minutes.
00:49:10Right. Goodbye.
00:49:12I'll check with you in half an hour.
00:49:14Okay.
00:49:24You can take mine, too, please.
00:49:28You certainly don't eat very much.
00:49:30Well, I...
00:49:32I don't know how you keep going.
00:49:34Well, you see, I had a big lunch.
00:49:36That reminds me.
00:49:38I'd better check in at the base again.
00:49:40Excuse me.
00:50:16Well, nothing's happened so far.
00:50:18Nothing at all.
00:50:20Did you make a wish?
00:50:22Yes.
00:50:25I've got a confession to make.
00:50:27Oh?
00:50:29What is it?
00:50:31You're still hungry.
00:50:33No.
00:50:36It's just that what I said about coming into town wasn't true.
00:50:39I went home, and Connie felt like being alone,
00:50:41so that made me feel lonely, too.
00:50:43So I decided to call you.
00:50:45That's not a confession.
00:50:47That's a compliment.
00:50:51You want a ballpoint pen, senor?
00:50:53What?
00:50:55Very cheap, senor. Eight pesos. Big bargain.
00:50:57See?
00:50:59No.
00:51:01Much ink inside.
00:51:03No, thank you.
00:51:05She will ride, oh, two million miles.
00:51:07No refills.
00:51:09How much is eight pesos?
00:51:11Sixty-five cents.
00:51:13All right, bud.
00:51:15You got yourself a decent.
00:51:17Thank you, senor.
00:51:19Hey, kid, my pen.
00:51:21What are you grinning at?
00:51:23Oh, Twill.
00:51:25You know, you're really much too serious.
00:51:27Maybe you're right.
00:51:29But I don't think you're like that underneath.
00:51:31What did you want to do when you were little?
00:51:33First, I wanted to be a fireman and a forest ranger.
00:51:39And I guess I wanted to be a cop.
00:51:41Really?
00:51:49Hey, senor, look.
00:51:51You like red?
00:51:53I got red, white, green, blue.
00:51:55Red and white, black and white, green and red.
00:51:57Blue and white.
00:51:59No, no. No blue and white.
00:52:01Red, red and white, black and white, green and red.
00:52:03Oh, look. I'll just take this one.
00:52:05Go on. Scoot.
00:52:07Shoot.
00:52:09Thank you, senor.
00:52:15Now, where were we?
00:52:17You were just going to take me home.
00:52:19I'm afraid it's getting very late.
00:52:23It's quarter after ten.
00:52:31Want to stop at the Four Oaks for a beer?
00:52:33I told Betty I'd come right home after our shift.
00:52:36So you'll be half an hour late.
00:52:38Take the canal cut off and we'll be there in five minutes.
00:52:42Check that car ahead.
00:52:47You better take a look.
00:52:49Yeah.
00:53:11All right.
00:53:42What happened? What's wrong?
00:53:44It... It was...
00:53:48Better get him to the hospital. Radio headquarters.
00:53:50Right.
00:53:52No. Mary Jean.
00:53:54Come on. Mary Jean.
00:54:1211-A-19, continue patrol.
00:54:1411-A-21, did you clear 11-A-51?
00:54:17It could have gone a dozen different ways.
00:54:19Every half mile there's a canal juncture and the locks were all open.
00:54:22I don't understand it. Did you check all the patrols on the sea?
00:54:25Yes, sir. Certain nothing got past them.
00:54:27There's 23 miles on that sea to that canal.
00:54:29And there's no connection between them by water.
00:54:31Twill.
00:54:33I just got a report.
00:54:35A farmer 15 miles from here found two of his cattle dead.
00:54:38Shriveled up. He thinks they were attacked about 10 o'clock last night.
00:54:4110 o'clock? How's that possible?
00:54:44We know that the boy and girl were attacked here at 10 o'clock last night.
00:54:47Of course. Of course.
00:54:49There must be an underground river through which they've all escaped.
00:54:51A river that leads from the sea to one of the thousands of pools near the canal area.
00:54:55They leave this pool at night, come in and around the canals in search of food.
00:54:59We'll have to extend the patrol to cover the entire canal system.
00:55:02Boy, there's 700 miles of canal bank in this county alone.
00:55:05That could take us days.
00:55:07We don't have days.
00:55:09The egg at the lab was almost the point of hatching when we got it.
00:55:11We must find this pool where they've made their new nest before they lay any more eggs.
00:55:14I'll call Air National Guard. We'll have their helicopter to work with ours.
00:55:17We'll check every pool in this valley for signs of their secretion.
00:55:20Good. Because the possibility of finding one pool out of thousands is pretty remote.
00:55:24There's always a chance that there may be an old survey map somewhere...
00:55:27that shows exactly where this underground river empties into the pool for which we're looking.
00:55:31Doctor, if there is such a map, we'll find it.
00:55:34Josh, come along. We'll use our car.
00:55:52This is Helicopter 2-5 reporting in.
00:55:55We have covered South Basin.
00:55:57This is Helicopter 2-5 reporting in.
00:56:00We have covered South Basin.
00:56:02There is no sign of target pool bearing South, Southeast.
00:56:17Well, now.
00:56:19We gave most of our map collection to the library.
00:56:22Mr. Dobbs, we've already been to the library.
00:56:24We've checked every possible source.
00:56:26Too bad. We don't have many documents.
00:56:28We don't have room for them.
00:56:30We put up a bond issue, Proposition 14-A...
00:56:33specifically asking for a document room.
00:56:36Oh, here.
00:56:38Here we are.
00:56:44Is this all you have?
00:56:46I'm sorry. Just not a speck of room.
00:56:49Mr. Dobbs, this is very important.
00:56:51Have you ever heard of an underground river...
00:56:53or an ancient waterway that runs through the valley...
00:56:55that would empty into a deep pool?
00:56:57Dear, dear, let me think.
00:57:00I can't think of a thing.
00:57:03But every once in a while, somebody dies...
00:57:06and leaves us a whole lot of documents for our room.
00:57:09The one we didn't get, you understand.
00:57:11Proposition 14-A was defeated.
00:57:14Well, if you should hear of anything, you can get me at the air base.
00:57:17Air base?
00:57:18Yeah, El Centro.
00:57:19Oh, sure, sure.
00:57:20I always cooperate with the authorities.
00:57:22You'll find that I'm a very cooperative person.
00:57:24Oh, thank you, Mr. Dobbs.
00:57:26Just call on me any time, night or day.
00:58:22Give me Navy Intelligence, please.
00:58:26ONI, yes. Yes.
00:58:28Lock 23? Lock 23, okay.
00:58:3023.
00:58:3123.
00:58:3246, okay. Nothing special.
00:58:35To bring you up to the minute, we still haven't spotted the pool where they've nested.
00:58:38We have the entire irrigation system under patrol.
00:58:41The gatekeepers at each lock are on 24-hour guard.
00:58:43I see.
00:58:44Someone is bound to spot one of those creatures soon.
00:58:46When they do, we close all the locks and hold it until we get there.
00:58:49After that, we'll follow it back to the pool.
00:58:51Sounds like an effective plan.
00:58:53I'll be in Captain Masters' office.
00:58:54All right.
00:58:55Josh, how many patrols have checked in?
00:58:5716.
00:58:58Gatekeepers have called 12 except three.
00:59:00Now, see if you can get them, will you?
00:59:02Right. Sally, try locks 14, 32, and 57.
00:59:06I'll call you back later, Mom.
00:59:18Lock 57.
00:59:21Yes, I did try, but the line was tied up.
00:59:25No, I haven't seen any creature.
00:59:28Just plain foolishness.
00:59:51Let's go.
01:00:13Come on, you can do it.
01:00:15Come on.
01:00:17That's all right.
01:00:18That's all right.
01:00:21Mom!
01:00:25Hey, boys.
01:00:26Boys, get away from there.
01:00:28We don't allow no swimming around here. You ought to know that.
01:00:30Go on now.
01:00:32Okay!
01:00:43Don't go in there, Sandy.
01:00:45We're going home now.
01:00:47When can we go swimming again?
01:00:49I don't know, dear.
01:00:51Well, then, can I go look at the rabbits?
01:00:53Not today, sweetie.
01:00:57Dr. Rogers' office.
01:00:59Yes?
01:01:01Yes, just a minute. I'll read you the figures on that.
01:01:07That was 2345.
01:01:10Yes, and 5423.
01:01:15Hello, Grace. How are you today?
01:01:18We have to be very, very quiet,
01:01:21because Mommy is so busy.
01:01:24Oh, poor Grace, you're cold.
01:01:28If I had a nice warm blanket,
01:01:31I'd put it over you.
01:01:39Maybe I can figure something out.
01:01:48Come on.
01:02:14There. Is that better?
01:02:17Go now, Grace. Goodbye.
01:02:19Fine.
01:02:21Goodbye.
01:02:25Sandy?
01:02:27Yes, Mommy?
01:02:29Let's go home.
01:02:32Lock 41, okay.
01:02:3441, okay.
01:02:36Proceed eastward on Highway 8-0.
01:02:39Have you heard anything?
01:02:41Not yet. We'll keep you posted.
01:02:43What time were the boy and girl attacked last night?
01:02:469.30 or 10.
01:02:48It's 9 o'clock now.
01:02:509 o'clock?
01:02:52I don't know.
01:02:54I don't know.
01:02:56I don't know.
01:02:589.30 or 10.
01:03:00It's 9 o'clock now.
01:03:02Yeah, I know.
01:03:28Hey, you kids!
01:03:32Don't try to hide from me!
01:03:36Hey, you kids!
01:03:41Hey, you kids!

01:05:01Aah!
01:05:12Still no answer.
01:05:14When was the last time you talked to him?
01:05:16At 8.
01:05:18Do we have a car in that area?
01:05:20Yeah, there's one within a half a mile.
01:05:22You better call it.
01:05:24Get Moore and Walker in car 14.
01:05:26This is Walker, car 14. What have you got?
01:05:29Proceed to Canal Junction 57.
01:05:31Repeat, proceed to Canal Junction 57.
01:05:35Right.
01:05:38My God.
01:05:40I'll call in.
01:05:42My God.
01:06:05I'll call in.
01:06:11This is car 14 calling control operations.
01:06:13Over.
01:06:14Come in, car 14.
01:06:15Tell Josh we found the gatekeeper, dead, just like the others.
01:06:20Have them stay where they are.
01:06:22Radio all the patrols.
01:06:23Roger.
01:06:24Clam, post everything at least to lock 57.
01:06:25We're going to try and hold it long enough to follow it.
01:06:27Right.
01:06:28Charlie, give me a line.
01:06:29Oh, Commander.
01:06:30Commander.
01:06:31Could I help you?
01:06:32Oh.
01:06:33I'm here to see Commander Twillinger.
01:06:34Will he be back?
01:06:35Well, not for quite so long.
01:06:36You just missed him.
01:06:37I know.
01:06:38Well.
01:06:39Well.
01:06:40Is there anything I could do?
01:06:41Oh, no.
01:06:42No.
01:06:43Well, I think maybe I'd better wait, if it's all right.
01:06:44He may be gone for hours, Mr.
01:06:45Dobbs.
01:06:46Lewis Clark Dobbs.
01:06:47Mr. Dobbs.
01:06:48Well.
01:06:49Well.
01:06:50Well.
01:06:51Well.
01:06:52Well.
01:06:53Well.
01:06:54Well.
01:06:55Well.
01:06:56Well.
01:06:57Well.
01:06:58Well.
01:06:59Well.
01:07:00Well.
01:07:01Well.
01:07:02Well.
01:07:03Well.
01:07:04Well.
01:07:06I'll wait.
01:07:07That's right.
01:07:08Close the locks south from juncture 302, to 23.
01:07:11Right.
01:07:12And keep it closed, until you hear from me.
01:07:35I
01:08:04called in the minute I heard that noise. I thought to myself, I thought, there's something
01:08:08breaking out there. Yes, there sure is something breaking. So I come out to see what it was.
01:08:14And there it was. But why weren't you out here? There's an emergency
01:08:17release on that lock. You could have stopped it from closing.
01:08:20Listen, mister, commander, I was only doing what they told me. I didn't know you wanted
01:08:25to follow it. Oh, you didn't, huh? Thanks anyway. I know
01:08:29how you feel, but it wasn't his fault. Well, yeah, what do we do now?
01:08:36Wait for another one. Come on, let's go back. Commander, Lewis Clark Dobbs.
01:08:46Oh, hello, Mr. Dobbs. What is it? Well, it's probably not anything at all.
01:08:51I see. How's it coming, sailor? The same, sir.
01:08:55Nothing, huh? No, sir.
01:08:57Well, you said it was important, you know, about the map.
01:09:00Yeah. Well, a very strange thing happened. I was
01:09:05looking for these papers. Well, actually, I was looking for this petition. We're campaigning
01:09:12again for Proposition 14A, you know, the one that was defeated. And there was this folder.
01:09:19And in the folder, there was this map. I remembered it because Mrs. DePona DePorto had asked me
01:09:25especially to take care of it. And then she passed on. I told you about it, didn't I? A
01:09:32very great loss. You see, the DePona DePorto family settled this valley. A most distinguished
01:09:39family. Is this a river?
01:09:41Oh, no, no. But the Indians dug wells along there, apparently. Here. It says here, in
01:09:49Spanish, of course, the wells of life. I read 18 foreign languages.
01:09:56Clem. Sir?
01:09:58Can't the boys work in the photo lab? Not now.
01:10:00I'll get them down there right away. I want this blown up, and I want it grabbed. Order
01:10:04me a helicopter at dawn and notify Dr. Rogers. Right, sir.
01:10:19Drop us down a little. That's the one.
01:10:38How do you want to proceed? We radio for equipment, then dive and destroy them.
01:10:49Well, chances are they're dormant now, but any sound may attract them. So set your charges
01:11:00and get out. Right. Are you ready?
01:11:03Are you? I think so.
01:11:05Doctor, your lab's on a mobile phone. Thanks.
01:11:08Yes, Gail? Doctor, I sent you those extra cylinders
01:11:12you asked for. They should be there in about ten minutes.
01:11:15Thank you. We may need them. Hold on a minute.
01:11:20Gail? Yes, Twill.
01:11:22Hi. Is everything all right? Are you all right?
01:11:27Everything's fine. Don't worry. I'll call you later.
01:11:30Okay. Twill? Yeah?
01:11:33Take care. I always do.
01:11:37Goodbye.
01:11:45I'll take a break.
01:12:16We're heavy on the frequency. We're moving through a dense grove.
01:12:21Can't tell what's ahead from here.
01:12:45We've reached the bottom, Doctor.
01:13:15We found them. Any problems?
01:13:19No, I think we can get them off. It took you three minutes to get down.
01:13:24Allow yourself two minutes' leeway. Will do.
01:13:45We set the first charge, Doctor.
01:14:16The pin on my last charge is stuck.
01:14:19Twill, Johns is in trouble.
01:14:45You're 30 seconds past safe time. Start up.
01:14:57You're 42 seconds past safe time. Start up.
01:15:06Are you on your way up? Just a second.
01:15:16We're on our way up.
01:15:19You have 25 seconds.
01:15:24Come on. Let's help pull him up.
01:15:30Hurry up.
01:15:45Come on.
01:16:08You fellas all right? Yeah.
01:16:15We'll make a check in half an hour when the sediment clears.
01:16:18All right.
01:16:35I'm sorry about what happened down there.
01:16:38You don't have to be.
01:16:40No, I made a mistake. When I signaled you, I was sure the pin was loose.
01:16:43That's all right. Anyone's entitled to an honest mistake.
01:16:46Well, anyway, you saved my neck. Thanks.
01:16:49Excuse me. I've got a phone call to make.
01:16:52That's a great relief, knowing we got them all.
01:16:55Yeah. You know, I guess I was wrong about that guy.
01:16:59A commander takes a bit of knowing.
01:17:02Mobile operator, give me Dr. Rogers' office, the Navy Lab.
01:17:06Sultan Sea, 2-2-1.
01:17:10Say, Johns is going to stay to load up. Would you mind dropping me at the lab?
01:17:13Sure, Doc. Jump in.
01:17:17I called Gail at the lab, but the line was busy.
01:17:20All right.
01:17:22No, they're all down at the pool, sir.
01:17:25Yes. Yes, I will.
01:17:28Hi, honey. Hi, Mommy.
01:17:31I got dressed by myself.
01:17:34And a good job you did, too. Have you had your orange juice?
01:17:37Yes. Good. Well, we'll have breakfast in a little while.
01:17:40Why don't you go play a while?
01:17:43Dr. Rogers' office.
01:17:45No, I'm sorry. He's not here now.
01:17:48I can take a message if you wish.
01:17:51Yes, Captain. No, I'm sorry. He was called away.
01:18:08Grace?
01:18:11Gracie?
01:18:17Mommy!
01:18:20Sandy! Sandy!
01:18:23Oh, honey, stay where you are!
01:18:26Mommy!
01:18:29Mommy! Don't move, Sandy.
01:18:38It's all right, honey. It's all right.
01:18:41Some of those come soon and help us.
01:18:49Mobile operator, would you try the Navy lab again?
01:18:52Salton Sea, 2-2-1.
01:18:55That's right.
01:18:58Still busy.
01:19:28Want to stop and get some breakfast?
01:19:31Oh, no, thanks. I had toast and coffee when I got up.
01:19:34But if you want to stop...
01:19:37No, I can wait.
01:19:47Sandy! Sandy! Do you see that window?
01:19:50What?
01:19:53Can you get up there?
01:19:56Try, Sandy! Try!
01:20:03Oh, God!
01:20:10Sandy, Sandy, I want you to close your eyes.
01:20:13I want you to close your eyes and put your head right there.
01:20:16And, Sandy, don't open them for a little while.
01:20:27Good morning, Commander.
01:20:30Doctor, go right ahead.
01:20:33Help!
01:20:57Don't you touch it!
01:21:01Damn!
01:21:04Can you hear me?
01:21:31Damn! Damn! Can you hear me?
01:21:34Damn!
01:21:37Now, listen, Gabe. When I holler, come out of there!
01:21:54Now! All right?
01:21:57Now! All right, Gabe? Now!
01:22:27Now!
01:22:57Now!
01:23:27Now!
01:23:44Here, take it easy now. You're still shaking.
01:23:47Yes, I am, but I feel all right now.
01:23:50What about you, Sandy?
01:23:53I think I'm all right.
01:23:56You know something, Sandy? You can go swimming again.
01:23:59Can I?
01:24:02Yes, ma'am, you can.
