00:00The earthquake in Morocco highlights once again the immense responsibility we, as architects, have.
00:06Designing safe buildings.
00:08While advancements in technology allow us to create flexible foundations that make new buildings safer,
00:14a significant challenge remains.
00:16How can we protect old buildings?
00:19This is what Kengo Kuma has been investigating for years and has implemented in his project in Nomi City, Japan.
00:27Resembling a giant spider web, a naturally resistant structure,
00:31Kengo introduced the world's first seismic reinforcement technique using rods of carbon fiber,
00:38a material as strong as iron but 90% lighter.
00:42In order to increase the resistance of the building, he attached the rods to both the outside and inside of the building.
00:49He reinforced the windows and staircases.
00:52In total, he installed nearly 4,000 rods to anchor the building to the ground.
00:57The idea is that if an earthquake causes the building to move from left to right,
01:02the rods will stretch and pull it back in the opposite direction, preventing it from shaking and collapsing.
01:08This solution is also being tested in heritage buildings,
01:11and although it might not be suitable for all old buildings,
01:15it demonstrates how architectural innovation can play a crucial role in something as vital as saving lives.
