00:00And what I do, I go through the internet and look at all these ridiculous claims that are
00:05sometimes made.
00:06And the great thing about this program is our quest is for the truth.
00:09And one of the claims is about this wonderful emerald mine.
00:14And basically, the claim that Errol started Elon's career with money from that emerald
00:20mine.
00:21Did you own a mine and did that start his career, Errol?
00:24What's the truth?
00:26The truth is, I had a very big aircraft in the mid-80s, South Africa, after the speech
00:32that the Prime Minister gave about never allowing a black government in 85, South Africa took
00:39a terrible dive down economically.
00:42And I had a very large aircraft, private aircraft, you know, business twin, and I didn't know
00:48what to do with it.
00:49I didn't have any more charter work for it and it was expensive to maintain.
00:52So I decided, I found a company in England.
00:54They said they'd buy it from me if I brought it there, they'd fool the icing.
00:58And on the way there, we were turned back at Jeddah because they're having an Eid sort
01:05of holiday.
01:06And they asked us, they said, if we come in, we're going to have to pay $2,000 to land
01:10and $600 a day to park.
01:13So we said, no, we'll turn back.
01:14And so I went to Lake Tanganyika to have a look at it.
01:17And there was a company there from Panama who were building a runway, in fact, which
01:22is today a holiday resort on the banks of Lake Tanganyika.
01:25And they saw the plane and I told them what I was doing with it and they said, no, we'll
01:28buy it.
01:29So they offered me the cash right there and then.
01:30And I said, okay, great.
01:32So then they bought the plane and then they said to me, are you interested in, if you
01:36give us half the money back, we'll give you, they gave me a fab pendant, that's the price
01:39for it.
01:40And they said, if you give us half the money back, you can have a half share in our emerald
01:43deposits.
01:45So I said, they showed me over a hundred emeralds, which I could have immediately,
01:49cut emeralds.
01:50And they said, well, you know, why not?
01:52And so I got into it and I dealt in emeralds for the next five years from that source.
01:58And of course, from all sorts of people later who would come to me with, you know, you get
02:02into the business, eventually people start coming to you.
02:05And I had my own cutters working and yeah, so it became quite a big business.
02:10But what it did do was enable us where other people were moving to trailer parks and to
02:15caravan parks because they couldn't afford their homes anymore in South Africa or getting
02:20out of the country by the million, by the hundreds of thousands, I mean.
02:25We were able to continue our life in the way we'd always had.
02:29And that was, we could travel, the boys and I, Elon Kimmel and I could travel extensively
02:34and we did during that time and we saw no change in our standard of living.
02:38And I sold emeralds all over the world.
02:40So by 1990, the Russians had brought out the Biron, which is an artificial emerald and
02:47that soured the business somewhat.
02:49And I sort of got out of it at that point.
02:52But I would recommend to anyone to go into the jewelry business.
02:56It's a very good business to be in and very interesting, very exciting.
