Blade Runner 2049 is a 2017 American epic neo-noir science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve from a screenplay by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, based on a story by Fancher. A sequel to Blade Runner (1982), the film stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, with Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto in supporting roles. Ford and Edward James Olmos reprise their roles from the previous film as Rick Deckard and Gaff, respectively. Gosling plays K, a "blade runner" who uncovers a secret that threatens to destabilize society and the course of civilization.

Ideas for a Blade Runner sequel were first proposed in the 1990s, but licensing issues stalled their development. Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson obtained the film rights from Bud Yorkin. Ridley Scott stepped down as the film's initial director and worked as an executive producer, while Villeneuve was later appointed to direct. Blade Runner 2049 was financed through a partnership between Alcon Entertainment and Sony Pictures, as well as a Hungarian government-funded tax rebate. Warner Bros., who had distributed its predecessor, released the film on behalf of Alcon in North America, while Sony handled distribution in international markets. Principal photography took place mostly at two soundstages in Budapest over four months from July to November 2016.

Blade Runner 2049 premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on October 3, 2017, and was released in the United States on October 6. The film received acclaim from critics, who praised multiple aspects including cast performances, directing, cinematography, and faithfulness to the previous film. Despite this, it was one of the biggest box-office bombs of the year, grossing just $267.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $150–185 million and failing to reach its estimated break-even point of $400 million. Blade Runner 2049 received many accolades, including Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects out of five nominations, and eight British Academy Film Awards nominations, winning for Best Cinematography and Best Special Visual Effects. A sequel television series, Blade Runner 2099, is in development at Amazon Studios, with Scott set to return as executive producer.

00:00It's quarter to three, there's no one in the place except you and me, make it one for my
00:20baby. One more for the road. I had your job once. I was good at it. I know. What do you
00:37want? I want to ask you some questions. The story. The themes. The stunning visual environments.
00:51It was a pleasure getting back to the world of Blade Runner again.
00:58Where are we going? Home.
01:12When I directed the original Blade Runner 35 years ago,
01:16I could never have imagined how iconic it would still be.
01:21I have massive respect for the world Ridley Scott created.
01:25Blade Runner revolutionized the way we view science fiction.
01:30When I heard that Ridley was continuing the narrative,
01:33I was already invested. I already wanted to know what happened next.
01:38I think it's kind of fun to play a character 30 years later.
01:42I'm used to trying on old clothes. Unhappily, they still fit.
01:53From the cinematography to the script, to working with Denis and Ridley,
01:58Roger, Harrison, Ryan. I just feel really lucky just to be on the team.
02:04I never felt that much pressure of my shoulders thinking that Ridley Scott would see this movie.
02:11I've never worked on a film with so many sets and different lighting patterns.
02:15Technically, it's quite challenging.
02:19They created this incredible world where there was a living, breathing universe.
02:25Designing this was like walking on a knife's edge,
02:28riding the line between the original film and what we're doing now.
02:33It's not just a replica of the first film.
02:36We're marrying the familiar with slightly divergent in order to give ourselves an identity.
02:41We're trying to keep the visual effects very reality-based and grounded.
02:45People should look at it and go, wow, this is a beautiful shot. How did they get it?
02:58I always told you, you're special.
03:05Your story isn't over yet.
03:09The first movie is always meant to be a standalone film,
03:13but there's always more to tell than the two hours will allow.
03:16We are making something special.
03:22It feels like a very grounded, realistic extension of the original.
03:27It's good to be home again.
03:29Who'd you bring?
03:30No one.
03:31I know you're here.
03:41This is impossible.
