00:00When I was 10, I wanted to become a neurosurgeon one day.
00:07I'm currently studying science in high school so I can achieve that dream.
00:12But I discovered I can do more and thanks to DW, I can see a career in media as well.
00:19My name is Chelsea Inakra and on Girls Off Mute, I'll be talking with my peers about
00:25career choices for the future.
00:27What do you want to be in future and why?
00:29I want to become a mechanical engineer.
00:32The reason of me choosing that job is because it's the forefront of future technology.
00:37Were you influenced by anyone to take that direction?
00:40Yes, I was influenced by my mum and she did a great thing by helping me choose that work.
00:47The reason of me saying is she discovered something in me, something very special in me.
00:52I want to be a journalist in future because I think I have passion for it and I'm capable
00:59of doing it.
01:00I wanted to become an entrepreneur but I'm not certain with the decision right now because
01:07my parents do not agree to that.
01:09What do you think is the reason why your parents are not in support of the fact that you want
01:13to be an entrepreneur?
01:15Because they think I'm good in calculations and so being an accountant would be okay for
01:21me but I don't think so.
01:23The career you want to pursue, what do your parents think of it?
01:26Are they in support of it or not?
01:28My parents are in support of my occupation but they also speak against certain parts
01:35of it like being a reporter like this because of the risks involved in it but they advise
01:40me to be a newscaster.
01:42Do you think parents should have a say in the career choices that you take?
01:46No, please.
01:49Because looking at my ability, there are certain things I can't do and so they don't have to
01:54force me to do something that I'm unable to do.
01:58It might affect me in the future.
02:00Do you also think that they have a say?
02:02Yes.
02:03The reason is they know you more than any other person and they want to support you
02:07financially so they have to guide you, not necessarily choose it for you but guide you
02:11on what you want to become.
02:13It was good to hear those thoughts from my fellow teenagers.
02:16What makes me sad is that many young people here in Ghana are jobless.
02:21Some are even university graduates which makes me think that there is more to just
02:25dreaming of a fanciful career.
02:28I hear a lot of information on news that university graduates find it difficult getting a job
02:34so I ask, why do they find themselves in such situations?
02:39We have excellent education but no jobs.
02:43Are you sure your education is excellent, first of all?
02:46Education is supposed to respond to change and that is not happening, especially in Ghana.
02:50That is where the problem is.
02:52The skill set needed for the future of work is unavailable.
02:55So obviously, unemployment will keep increasing because the companies are looking for a certain
03:00kind of skill set but the school is not providing it.
03:03You are an expert in job recruiting services.
03:06So which career or careers would you advise me or my age mates to take up so that in the
03:11near future we don't find difficulties or troubles finding jobs?
03:15Anything tech takes on and anything human related to customer service, service oriented
03:24industries will never stop.
03:26So even with the emergence of AI, robotics and all of that, human beings need that human
03:30touch.
03:31You cannot take that away.
03:32So it's either you are into the tech space or you are into the people business.
03:35Another thing is this, get a career coach.
03:39I cannot tell you, Chelsea, what you should do if I have no access to you.
03:44So there are several career personality tests we have to take you through to know what career
03:48will suit you.
03:50Because you don't go into a career because I'm doing it.
03:54And that's the problem with young students.
03:55They go to social media and they're excited.
03:57They see all the glitz and glam.
03:59I want to be like this, I want to be like that.
04:00But social media doesn't really, it's not really real world.
04:03It doesn't show you everything.
04:04So get a career coach.
04:06Get assessed.
04:07Should parents choose our careers for us or we do it ourselves?
04:11Parents should never choose your careers for you.
04:13They should guide you into choosing a career, right?
04:15So parents can take the role of being a career coach as well because I personally am a career
04:20coach to my kids.
04:21So, I mean, they won't have to need one.
04:23Look at what they're interested in.
04:25Expose them to different things as young as they are.
04:29I hope you got educated, exposed and inspired by this edition of the show, just like I did.
04:36My name is Chelsea and thanks for watching and hope to see you soon.
