00:00Finally, the much-awaited face-off, and perhaps the only presidential debate for the November
00:052024 polls, took place in the city of brotherly love.
00:10And there was certainly no love lost between the two, as sparks flew in their attacks against
00:15each other on inflation, immigration, abortion, national security, and foreign policy.
00:21The OA's Chief National Correspondent, Steve Herman, fills us in with more.
00:29Standing two meters apart, with no audience in the room, the two presidential nominees,
00:33who had never met before Tuesday night, had their first encounter, hosted by ABC News
00:40and simulcast on other broadcast networks to tens of millions of likely American voters.
00:46Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to those voters as much as she responded to the attacks
00:51from former President Donald Trump, setting much of her own course following President
00:56Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race.
00:58Clearly, I am not Joe Biden, and I am certainly not Donald Trump.
01:04And what I do offer is a new generation of leadership for our country.
01:08One who believes in what is possible.
01:12One who brings a sense of optimism about what we can do, instead of always disparaging the
01:19American people.
01:21Trump blamed Harris, whom he called a Marxist, for a surge in illegal migration into the
01:26United States.
01:27They've destroyed the fabric of our country.
01:31Millions of people let in.
01:32Trump, without evidence, also blamed Harris for Russia invading Ukraine, and the war in
01:38Gaza.
01:39She hates Israel.
01:40At the same time, in her own way, she hates the Arab population, because the whole place
01:47is going to get blown up.
01:49Arabs, Jewish people, Israel, Israel will be gone.
01:54For Trump, it was his seventh time on the presidential debate stage, for Harris her
01:59first.
02:00She said the Republican nominee is unfit to return to the White House, and there's a consensus
02:05about that among world leaders, except for the autocrats, whom Trump admires.
02:10You adore strongmen, instead of caring about democracy.
02:15Trump's surrogates in the spin room, such as Republican Congressman Byron Donalds of
02:20Florida, said Harris failed to articulate what she would do as president.
02:25Kamala Harris, all she did was attack him.
02:28She didn't talk about the policies.
02:30She didn't talk about her differentiations between her and the Biden administration.
02:34When Afghanistan came up, what did she say?
02:36A lot of nothing.
02:38Nearly a third of voters polled prior to the debate said they were familiar with Trump
02:42and needed to learn more about Harris.
02:44The debate flushed out a clear contrast between the two, according to a Democratic Party congressman
02:49from California, Ted Lieu.
02:51Kamala Harris was presidential.
02:53Donald Trump was weird and incoherent.
02:56Unless Trump and Harris debate again before Election Day, this may have been their best
03:01opportunity to try to sway the relatively small number of undecided voters in the seven
03:08swing states expected to decide who will become the next president of the United States.
03:14Steve Herman, VOA News, Philadelphia.
