00:05Center holding some high-profile terrorists following the collapse of the Alau Dam which
00:09the fast-spreading floodwater have submerged houses, bridges and displaced thousands of
00:15residents in Borneo State.
00:17According to local media, shortly after the floodwater destroyed the wall fence of the
00:22prison, some inmates drowned, while many others swung their way out and escaped.
00:29Alau Serong reported earlier on Tuesday that there is prison break in Maiduguri following
00:34flooding.
00:35And then security forces fired shots in response.
00:39Another local media reported that the prison is Maiduguri Maximum Security Correctional
00:44Facility in the stealth low-cost area of Maiduguri within the Maiduguri local government area
00:50of Borneo State.
00:51And then the incident occurred early hours on Tuesday.
00:55Sahara Reporters reported that not fewer than 200 inmates have escaped after a devastating
01:01flood pulled down a prison wall in Maiduguri, the Borneo State capital.
01:07An official of the Nigerian Correctional Center in Maiduguri told Sahara Reporters on Tuesday
01:12that over 200 inmates escaped from the facility after a portion of the facility's perimeter
01:17fence was pulled down in the aftermath of the flood that ravaged the city on Tuesday.
01:23The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that some Boko Haram commanders
01:29held at the Maiduguri New Prison were among those who escaped.
01:34The source said, the rain was torrential and caused terrible flood which affected our facility.
01:41Part of the wall of the Maiduguri New Prison collapsed and some Boko Haram commanders held
01:46in our facility have escaped with other prisoners.
01:50Those who escaped are more than 200 in all.
01:54We were able to move 200 other inmates to a different facility, the officer added.
02:00In a stark contradiction to the Borneo State government's earlier assurances, the flood
02:05situation in Maiduguri took a turn for the worse on Tuesday, just four days after officials
02:11claimed to have implemented comprehensive preventive modules.
02:16Reports from local media also indicated that major roads, houses, and shops in Maiduguri
02:22Metropolis, the Borneo State capital, and parts of the Jeren local government area have
02:28been submerged by floodwaters.
02:31Also submerged by the floodwater included the Shells Palace, the University of Maiduguri
02:36Teaching Hospital, and Sanda Kiariwi Park Zoo where some of the animals were seen on
02:42the street.
02:43The prison wall located along the Kostong area was said to have been broken by the floodwater
02:48as some inmates reportedly drowned while several others escaped for their lives.
02:54Major roads within the state capital including the post office roundabout which links major
02:59locations in the capital were seen in videos posted online flooded thereby cutting off
03:04vehicular movement within the metropolis.
03:07The Abadanaram, Kostong Road along which the flooded prison is located, Tashanbama, Kostong
03:14Road, Monde Market, Gamboro Market Kostong Area, Kato Market in Old Maiduguri, Gwanch
03:22Area, Lego Street are all communities affected by the flood, according to local media reports.
03:29The Maiduguri Zoo's popularity known as Sanda Kiariwi Zoo Park was also flooded.
03:35The general manager of the zoo, Ali Abacha, reportedly said 80 percent of the animals
03:41in the zoo have been killed by the flood while the others have escaped into the city capital.
03:48Thousands of residents living along waterways and flood-prone areas have been displaced,
03:53the majority of whom are women and children.
03:57Several shop owners and small-scale businesses are also affected by the flood.
04:02Touring across safer areas within Maiduguri, thousands of women and children are relocating
04:08along with their belongings.
04:10Many of them are seen taking refuge under trees at the major roads.
04:15The floodwater is caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam which is said to be a major source
04:20of water supply to Maiduguri which draws its source from River Ugada in Cameroon and the
04:25Lake Chad.
04:27When contacted the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abubakar Umar, regarding
04:33the issue, he said, we're taking stock across the country.

04:44The flooding has engulfed the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, UMTH, Lagos Truth Bridge
04:51and other places as seen in the videos posted online.
04:56A photograph posted online showed a man and his family have become homeless as a result
05:01of the flooding.
05:03Mohamadou Goni, 48-year-old man was also seen in a video pointing at his house completely
05:09submerged in floodwater on Tuesday in Maiduguri.
05:13The father of six, as reported by Humongo, said he has been separated from his wife and
05:18children by the tragic flood.
05:20The fast-moving waters have overwhelmed central Maiduguri, submerging key locations, including
05:27the Shell of Gondos Palace, the State Secretariat, the Zoo, the University of Maiduguri Teaching
05:34Hospital and the Central Cemetery, Humongo reported.
05:38Nigeria's third-old television station, NTA reported that Maiduguri, the capital of Gondos
05:46State, is experiencing flood levels not seen since 1994.
05:51This phenomenon has affected the zoo in the capital, with wild animals seen on the streets.
05:57We gathered that hundreds of people started evacuating their homes as early as 2 a.m.
06:03on Tuesday early morning night due to the flood that was engulfing Maiduguri in a faster
06:08move.
