Norway's car market is 94% EVs – and a quarter of them are Chinese
No other country comes close to Norway’s level of market penetration. Unlike the U.S. and EU, the Scandinavian country does not impose tariffs on Chinese cars – and they represent almost a quarter of the EV market. CGTN’s Johannes Pleschberger reports from Oslo

00:00Norway is in the homestretch to becoming fully electric.
00:06No other country gets even remotely close to the Scandinavian Kingdom's latest EV market
00:12share of 94%, a new world record.
00:16The policy is not just about promoting EVs, but it's also about punishing petrol and diesel
00:23engine cars.
00:24They're pretty much taxed so much that they're getting less and less interesting to buy.
00:30In July, Norway's government introduced a measure which makes the leasing of combustion
00:35cars financially unattractive.
00:39Most expected Norway to miss its target of reaching 100% electric vehicle sales by the
00:45end of the year.
00:47But thanks to new financial incentives, the Scandinavian Kingdom made a big leap this
00:51summer and dealerships are about to get rid of their last combustion cars.
00:56Meanwhile, electric cars from China are becoming more and more popular in Norway, increasing
01:02their market share to 23%, according to the sales database OFV.
01:08BYD was able to triple its sales in Norway, while NIO rose by almost 50%.
01:15Norway with the subsidies and incentives from the government, it's a perfect first step
01:20for Chinese brands to sell in Norway, and we see that has been a success.
01:26In contrast with the European Union and the United States, Norway is not imposing tariffs
01:31on electric cars imported from China.
01:34Norway has no particular policy for Chinese cars than any other country's electrical vehicles,
01:43so we have the same policy for China as for other countries.
01:49So Norway doesn't have any tariffs on Chinese EVs, and I think competition is good, and
01:55it's important that we have a big player like China that is going forward and pushing the
02:01rest of the world to follow.
02:04Pushing the rest of the world to follow is something both China and Norway have in common,
02:09at least when it comes to electric vehicles.
