Il mezzo usato dal commando fu dato alle fiamme e abbandonato in via Caruso, dove fu ritrovato dai carabinieri. Medaglia d'oro al valor civile:«Addetto a Nucleo Operativo di Gruppo, pur consapevole dei rischi a cui si esponeva, si impegnava con infaticabile slancio ed assoluta dedizione al dovere in prolungate e difficili indagini – rese ancora più ardue dall’ambiente caratterizzato da tradizionale omertà - che portavano all’arresto di numerosi e pericolosi aderenti ad organizzazioni mafiose. Ievolella, a non-commissioned officer in the Carabinieri, was killed in Palermo on 10 September 1981 by four killers armed with 7.65 calibre pistols and rifles loaded with buckshot, who, having just got out of a stolen Fiat Ritmo, opened fire in the direction of the Marshal. The vehicle used by the commando was set on fire and abandoned in Via Caruso, where it was found by the Carabinieri. Gold Medal for Civil Valor: «Assigned to the Group Operations Unit, although aware of the risks to which he was exposed, he committed himself with tireless enthusiasm and absolute dedication to duty in prolonged and difficult investigations – made even more difficult by the environment characterised by traditional silence – which led to the arrest of numerous and dangerous members of Mafia organisations.
