A survey has found national pride is at its lowest since 1995
Transcript
00:00National pride in Britain has hit an all-time low. That's according to a survey of the British public by the National Centre for Social Research as part of their decades-long look at social attitudes in the UK.
00:13Surveying began in 1995. Back then, 69% of those surveyed said they'd rather be a British citizen than a citizen of any other country. This time, only 49% agreed with the statement.
00:24While pride in Britain's history and the way democracy works here dropped, pride in our achievements in the arts, literature, sports and the economy remained strong, even increasing in some cases.
00:34There's also been a shift in what respondents believe it means to be British. Natsen's British Social Attitude Report explains the results.
00:41Despite Brexit and the debate about immigration, Britain has become less exclusive in its attitude towards Britishness, less likely to feel a sense of superiority as compared with the rest of the world, and somewhat more critical about its politics and its past.
00:55But what about you? Do you have a strong sense of national pride and why or why not? What sort of things make you proud to be British? And what does being British mean to you?
