Judi Dench - Sonnet 29 - 'When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes' - The Graham Norton Show - Air date: 27th of October, 2023.
SONNET 29
When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

00:00We quote Shakespeare all the time, perhaps without knowing it.
00:04But, I mean, also, you only have to go to those plays
00:08and be in any kind of those situations,
00:11being in love or being jealous or being angry or being whatever,
00:16and you will find that there is a way of him summing up
00:20that is completely sufficient for what your emotion is.
00:25Yeah. What passage is on your mind now, Graham?
00:28Well, er...
00:30It's like it was just on the tip of your tongue there.
00:33How all occasions do inform against me.
00:36Whoa!
00:38Wow! You went all out, dude!
00:41Show me the cards, show me the cards!
00:44LAUGHTER
00:47Don't know where that came from.
00:50Big Judy, if I poke you with a stick,
00:54can you just do a bit of Shakespeare for us?
00:57What, with a stick?
00:59I'll poke you with a stick. Touch you gently.
01:01If I touch you gently with a stick, could you do a little bit for us?
01:04Like what? I don't know, like a bit of a play or a sonnet?
01:07A sonnet, a sonnet. A sonnet? I'll do a sonnet.
01:09It's like having a Shakespeare jukebox. Yeah, it happens.
01:12LAUGHTER
01:14Um, um...
01:19When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
01:22I all alone beweep my outcast state,
01:27And trouble death-heaven with my bootless cries,
01:30And look upon myself and curse my fate,
01:33Wishing me light to one more rich in hope,
01:37Featured like him, like him, with friends possessed,
01:42Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,
01:46With what I most enjoy contented least,
01:50Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
01:55Happily I think on thee, and then my state,
02:00Like to the lark at break of day arising from sullen earth,
02:06Sings hymns at heaven's gate,
02:10For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings,
02:16That then I scorn to change my state with kings.
02:21Wow.
02:23CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
02:31That is spellbinding. Really, it's gorgeous.
02:34Unbelievable. I know. Unbelievable.
02:37I mean, there's more dialogue than I had in all my movies altogether.
02:41LAUGHTER
02:43If you now do, I'll be back.
02:45LAUGHTER
02:48But, Arnie, you did do a little bit of Shakespeare in a film.
02:53Yes, it was in Last Action Hero.
02:55Yes. Yeah, exactly. Oh, classic.
02:57Yes, you gave a bit of Hamlet, I believe.
02:59That's right, exactly. Do you remember what you did?
03:02I think it was To Be or Not To Be.
03:04Yeah. And then I added the line,
03:06Not to be, and we blew up the castle in the background.
03:09LAUGHTER
