00:00Hello, my name is Marco Cumermurci and I'm the director of the film The Other Side of the Pipe.
00:06Thank you for watching and I'm grateful to Visione Dal Mondo for including our film in this year's programme,
00:13because since 2017, when I began recording materials for the film,
00:20I've noticed that not many people are aware of the Southern Gas Corridor.
00:25The Southern Gas Corridor is a political project.
00:28Well, it is as well an enormous, very expensive gas pipeline bringing gas from Azerbaijan to Italy,
00:36and it was constructed to teach Russia a lesson.
00:40But however, the basic facts are, Azerbaijan is a dictatorship,
00:45and at the time the decision was made, it ranked even lower than Russia in terms of human rights violations.
00:53And today, ecologists consider gas almost as problematic as coal.
00:59So, when the boulders start to dig in, some people disagree.
01:06The film tells gentle stories of three individuals, locals from Greece and Italy,
01:13who took significant risks to stand up for what I believe are real European values.
01:19I'm talking about democracy, environmental values and human rights issues,
01:26topics that are fundamental even in today's turbulent times.
01:31This film presents a farmer, a bartender and a retired teacher.
01:38I have spent years working on the film,
01:42but I still struggle to accept the brutality they faced from the governments,
01:48court systems and other authorities.
01:52And sadly, I don't have a positive conclusion,
01:56because today European governments are searching for new gas suppliers from Africa and the Middle East.
02:03Places there are fragile, and I'm afraid we learn nothing,
02:08and we will again need people like Giacomo, Temiz and Ipatio, people who will be willing to fight.
02:15So, once again, thank you for watching the film.
