00:00Hey everyone! One question I get asked a lot, especially since I started releasing free PSD files over at IceflowStudios.com, is how to save an icon file, or an ICO file, in Photoshop.
00:12If you've ever taken a look at the options within the Save dialog box, you might have noticed that there's no way to do so.
00:18Luckily, there are solutions. Telegraphics.com.au has a plugin which will add that option to your save choices.
00:26When you arrive on their site, at the bottom, find the operating system that you're working with, and download the .dmg or .zip file to your computer.
00:34Once it's downloaded, you'll find three files, two of which you really don't have to pay much attention to.
00:39We're looking for the ICO format plugin file. This needs to go into its proper location within Photoshop's application folder.
00:47Go ahead and navigate to Photoshop's folder. On a Mac, it'll be in your Applications folder. On a PC, it should be in your Program Files.
00:55When there, locate and enter the Plugins folder, and then hop into File Formats. This is where you want to place your new plugin.
01:02The next time you restart Photoshop, if your file meets the requirements, you'll be able to save as an icon file.
01:08In order for the icon options to appear, your file must be an 8-bit file, which is no larger than 256x256.
01:16So for this file here, I'm going to drop down to 8-bit, and then resize this document to 256x256.
01:23Now, when I go to Save As, the option to save as an ICO file is available to me. I hope that helps those who are wondering.
