Germany will set up temporary controls at all of its land borders, expanding checks it already has in place at some borders, in an attempt to curb irregular migration.

00:10German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser says it is an attempt to reduce irregular migration.
00:15Until we come to a strong protection of the EU's external borders with the new common
00:22European asylum system, we have to control our national borders even more.
00:27Temporary border controls will be set up at the land borders with France, Luxembourg,
00:36the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark for a period of six months.
00:42The same measures are already in place on the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic,
00:46Austria and Switzerland.
00:51Europe's Schengen area allows for free travel between member countries.
00:55However, member states are allowed to introduce border checks if they feel there is a threat
01:00to internal security.
01:04Faeser adds that the government has already notified the European Union of the intended
01:09controls.
