00:01:55In the early years of last century, people of the highlands of Scotland were brutally evicted from their small farms or crops by landlords who found they could make more money out of sheep.
00:02:09Their ancient homes in the glens were destroyed and the crofters were driven to the barren seashores.
00:02:17On these wild, rock-bound coasts, they had to turn for a living to a new and treacherous element, the sea.
00:02:28Many were the perils they encountered, from the press gang that hunted them to the cholera that swept their land.
00:02:36But their spirit was indomitable.
00:02:41Through storm and loss, with humor and grim power, they fought on.

00:40:52Now, let's see.
00:41:03Is it the fever?
00:41:05I came just in time.
00:41:08But there's no need to worry.
00:41:10I'd like some water, please.
00:41:12Yes.
00:41:14I want fresh water.
00:41:16I'll get fresh water.
00:41:21Is there anything I can do, Doctor?
00:41:23No. She'll be as right as rain in about, well, a few days.
00:41:32Oh, come on.
00:41:35Come on.
00:41:37Take this. Come on.
00:41:39Come on.
00:41:44That's better.
00:41:50Give her those powders three times a day.
00:41:53The important thing is boil all clothing.
00:41:56Remove all furniture into the open air.
00:41:59Wash and scrub everything.
00:42:02ΒΆΒΆ
00:42:18I don't think he'll ever have to travel 30 miles again, eh?
00:42:22We've completely broken the scourge.
00:42:25Goodbye.
00:42:33I had a word with the schoolmaster this morning.
00:42:36He said you were always clever at your lessons.
00:42:40He could teach you Latin.
00:42:43The 40 sovereigns left us would be enough to send you to the university at Aberdeen.
00:42:48That's what he said.
00:42:51He asked me to talk it over with you and let him know.
00:42:55What do you think, Finn?
00:42:58I want to be a skipper.
00:43:04All right, Finn.
00:43:06I'll not stand in your way. You must know that.
00:43:10The money's yours for whatever you need.
00:43:13Oh, Mother, thanks!
00:43:16Oh, I made it!
00:43:19From Dunster, north about, through the Pentland Fouth and away to Stornow.
00:43:25That's your course, Roddy.
00:43:27And you'll be the first boat to sail from this coast round to the west.
00:43:32It'll be two months before the herring season starts here.
00:43:36And if you can prove there's an early season in the west,
00:43:39you'll double everything for all of us.
00:43:42It's into the unknown.
00:43:45It's a great new adventure.
00:43:48A lot depends on you, Roddy.
00:43:51I'll do my best.
00:44:09Who is it?
00:44:20Angus MacRae.
00:44:23Yes, Katrine. Angus.
00:44:26He sailed with your man, Tormad, twelve years ago.
00:44:30Tormad? Is he...
00:44:32He'll never come back.
00:44:36He died at sea.
00:44:39He died at sea.
00:44:42Yes.
00:44:44He'll never come back.
00:44:48Callum looks far through.
00:44:51I'll get him to water.
00:44:58Can I have a drop?
00:45:00No, Pinboy, there's none to spare.
00:45:02Let's keep the water for Callum.
00:45:05I'll get him to water.
00:45:08I'll get him to water.
00:45:11I'll get him to water.
00:45:14I'll get him to water.
00:45:16Callum!
00:45:18He's aged a bit at sea now and still no sight of land.
00:45:22Where do you think we are?
00:45:24It seems to me we're heading straight into the Atlantic.
00:45:27Fine! We're heading for America.
00:45:31There's nothing we can do but run with the weather.
00:45:38Keep on sailing!
00:45:41Come on, Pinboy, come on! Keep on!
00:45:46Come on!
00:45:57It's land! Look, boys!
00:46:00It's land! Stand by!
00:46:03Stand by, boys! It's land!
00:46:16It's land!
00:46:47It's a fearsome-looking place.
00:46:51Maybe we'd better go away again.
00:46:54I wonder if there's any water up there.
00:46:59Let go of the anchor!
00:47:06Where are we? What island is this?
00:47:09I don't know, Callum-boy.
00:47:13Sheep!
00:47:15There must be water up there.
00:47:17Yes.
00:47:19I could go up.
00:47:22No one's going to climb that cliff.
00:47:25If you land me, I'll climb it.
00:47:28You heard what I said.
00:47:29We must get water. You know that.
00:47:31You're not going to climb that cliff.
00:47:33I'm responsible for you.
00:47:34Responsible?
00:47:36Yes.
00:47:38You're not going to climb that cliff.
00:47:40I'm responsible for you.
00:47:41Responsible? Who to?
00:47:43Never mind who to.
00:47:45As long as I'm the skipper of this...
00:47:46I can climb that cliff, I tell you.
00:47:47But it's too dangerous.
00:47:50Callum needs water. You must let me go up.
00:47:52He won't last much longer.
00:47:55All right. You'd better go.
00:48:02Now, bring her in stern first.
00:48:05Look out for rocks below.
00:48:06I'm ready.
00:48:07Now, when she comes up, don't jump.
00:48:10Now, careful.
00:48:12Here she comes.
00:48:13All right, now, good luck.
00:48:19Good boy!
00:48:23I'll bring you a special.
00:48:37I'll bring you a special.
00:49:07I'll bring you a special.
00:49:37I'll bring you a special.
00:50:07I'll bring you a special.
00:50:37I'll bring you a special.
00:50:39I'll bring you a special.
00:51:08He's done it!
00:51:26You wouldn't be hearing anything yet a while, Katrina.
00:51:30It's a long way to Stoneway.
00:51:34I don't trust the sea.
00:51:37You trust Roddy.
00:51:40And don't you go worrying about Finn either.
00:51:43He's sailing under the best skipper in the north.
00:51:47And Roddy will look after him like a father.

00:55:46Course I'm alright.
00:55:49Didn't even break your neck or something?
00:55:52I broke nothing but he nearly did.
00:55:54What?
00:55:55Eggs!
00:55:56Apes! Yes! Apes! Yes!
00:55:59Here, catch. Go on, catch. Yeah, I got him.
00:56:05Once more they steer their little boat,
00:56:08without chart, without compass,
00:56:11into the grim, grey vastness of the North Atlantic Ocean,
00:56:15west and further west,
00:56:18towards the lonely Hebrides and Stornami.
00:56:22Then at last, success!
00:56:25They found what they wanted, a second season.
00:56:31Herring! Herring! Herring!
00:56:36Come on, you beauties!
00:56:40Boys, it's a sight I near forgot.
00:56:44My silver darlings!
00:56:50My agent writes to tell me of our great success
00:56:53fishing on the West Coast.
00:56:55This is great news indeed!
00:56:59Instead of one fishing season a year,
00:57:02now we have two!
00:57:04It proves what one boat can do.
00:57:07Next season, I'll send twenty boats!
00:57:11It's beautiful. It's lovely.
00:57:14So you did think of your mother.
00:57:16You look fine.
00:57:24But aren't you going to wear it?
00:57:26Wear it? No, it's much too pretty to wear.
00:57:36Fenny, there's something I want to tell you.
00:57:40While you were away, an old friend of your father's came to see me.
00:57:44You've heard me speak of Angus.
00:57:46Angus? The man who sailed with father?
00:57:48Yes. He was with him in the boat when they were taken away.
00:57:52He was with him when he died.
00:57:59My father is dead.
00:58:07I must see this man, Angus.
00:58:22I must see this man, Angus.
00:58:47When we went fishing,
00:58:49the last glimpse your father had was of you.
00:58:53Suddenly, he saw a ship.
00:58:55A man o' war.
00:58:57He would take me.
00:59:08Yes, come!
00:59:19Name?
00:59:21Stand to attention when you're spoken to.
00:59:28Angus!
00:59:45Put that man in ire!
00:59:47Me?
01:00:17That's how he died.
01:00:19A fine man was Thurman.
01:00:21You can be proud of that.
01:00:23I am.
01:00:25And he was my father.
01:00:39Was Angus now talking to you?
01:00:41Yes, he was.
01:00:44Was Angus now talking to friends?
01:00:46Oh, so that's Angus.
01:00:48I'd like to order him.
01:00:50Oh, no, not now. Some other time.
01:00:55It does the heart good to see the world young once more.
01:00:58Are you feeling it in your feet, Father?
01:01:00I feel the youth of the world in me feet.
01:01:03Aye, but could you dance now?
01:01:05Aye, could that.
01:01:07Aye, could that.
01:01:09Have a drink.
01:01:11Oh, no, I've had enough.
01:01:13All right, give me a swallow.
01:01:15Oh, one man, do you not understand
01:01:17that we're living in the midst of great doings?
01:01:20Our lads are showing an example to the rest of the world.
01:01:27Now you're a bit slow.
01:01:29It's the music's too fast.
01:01:38Whee!
01:01:56Look.
01:01:58There's a halo around the moon.
01:02:00That means a storm.
01:02:02Oh, that's nothing to be frightened of.
01:02:04I always fear when the gale is arising.
01:02:07Still being frightened?
01:02:09You know, you were being frightened the first morning I met you.
01:02:13You remember that day by the old house of peace?
01:02:16Yes.
01:02:18You said Katrine was a beautiful name.
01:02:22I did.
01:02:25But you've changed since then, you know.
01:02:27Have I?
01:02:29Oh, yes.
01:02:31You're more beautiful now.
01:02:35I loved you the first moment I said I did.
01:02:40And I shall love you till I die.
01:02:46Will you marry me, Katrine?
01:02:50Yes, Roddy.
01:02:52I'll marry you.
01:03:04We'll have a wedding fit for a king and queen.
01:03:09Here's to the best skipper in the north!
01:03:12And to his new mate!
01:03:14Hey, Finn, who's going to be best man at the wedding?
01:03:17What are you talking about?
01:03:19Roddy's a smart one.
01:03:21Picked the prettiest lassie on the coast and the little Finn didn't know it.
01:03:24Here's to Roddy Sinclair and his best cat, sweet Katrine.
01:03:29What's that?
01:03:31Here's to Roddy Sinclair and his best cat, sweet Katrine.
01:03:34What are you laughing at, you fool?
01:03:36It's a lie!
01:03:37You don't understand, you're drunk!
01:03:39Drunk like Katrine at the radio.
01:03:42Everyone should be happy, Finn has got the radio.
01:03:45Stop it! Stop it!
01:03:47Hey, Finn!
01:03:48Take it easy!
01:03:50Keep your chin up, lad!
01:03:52It's not true, do you hear me? It's not true!
01:03:54Of course it's not true. They were just having their fun.
01:03:56But I tell you it's not true!
01:03:57Well, you'll never know.
01:04:01Well, if it is true,
01:04:03I'll never speak to Roddy again as long as I live.
01:04:20Oh, Finn, I'm so glad you're back.
01:04:22I've got something to...
01:04:24What's the matter with you, Finn?
01:04:26What's the matter with me?
01:04:28Nothing.
01:04:31Nothing.
01:04:36Oh.
01:04:47Finn!
01:04:48Finn, I want to speak to you.
01:04:55Is your breakfast, Finn?
01:04:57I don't want it.
01:05:02Finn, I've something to tell you.
01:05:05Roddy's asked me to marry him.
01:05:09It's nothing to me what you do.
01:05:32Hey, Finn!
01:05:53Good morning, Katrine.
01:05:55Good morning, Roddy.
01:05:57I called to see if you wanted any peat cutting.
01:05:59Peat?
01:06:01Well, you know we've got plenty of peat.
01:06:03Oh.
01:06:05That wasn't why you called, was it?
01:06:07No.
01:06:09Not exactly.
01:06:11What then?
01:06:16Could you give me this?
01:06:20It's real silver.
01:06:24A silver ring.
01:06:26A silver ring.
01:06:28It's very old. It was my grandmother's.
01:06:32Well.
01:06:34Aren't you going to put it on for me?
01:06:46Now you're promised.
01:06:48Yes.
01:06:50Did you tell Finn?
01:06:52Yes, I spoke to him this morning.
01:06:54What did he say?
01:06:56He rushed out of the house without saying anything and slammed the door behind him.
01:06:58Oh.
01:07:00So that's why he passed me without a word, looking like murder.
01:07:02I can't think what's happened to him lately.
01:07:04I can't do anything with him these days.
01:07:06He needs a man to take him in hand.
01:07:08Oh, no, I couldn't bear it if there were any trouble between you and Finn.
01:07:12There'll be no trouble between us.
01:07:14Rest your mind, he's young, that.
01:07:16I wonder what's keeping the skipper.
01:07:18Hey, Finn!
01:07:20Where's Roddy?
01:07:22There he is.
01:07:34Everything ship-shape?
01:07:36Everything's ship-shape.
01:07:38Where's that creel?
01:07:40Hey, Finn, throw that creel down.
01:07:46How do I handle a creel?
01:07:48Handle it yourself.
01:07:50Watch your step, young man.
01:07:52Ah, looks like we're gonna have a good trip to Stornoway.
01:08:04Can it be there's no more fish in the sea?
01:08:06Come on, boys, get those nets in quicker.
01:08:10Come on, come on, get them in and we'll make for Stornoway.
01:08:16Have one yourself, Nike boy.
01:08:18Thanks.
01:08:20When are you leaving Stornoway, mister?
01:08:22Sooner the time.
01:08:24Glad I'll be to see the back of you with your fights and brawls.
01:08:26Six bottles smashed last night.
01:08:28This killing Sunday will be one of these days.
01:08:30Not for the first time. Have a drink?
01:08:32I don't drink with murderers.
01:08:36Well, good luck to you, and a fair win back to Helmsville.
01:08:38The smarties, coasters.
01:08:40They've been out for days.
01:08:42And what do you think they've caught?
01:08:44Nothing.
01:08:46Fish.
01:09:06Whiskey.
01:09:16It's not every day you see a skipper who can't catch fish.
01:09:22Hey, sailor, that'll be enough from you.
01:09:24If it isn't the old friend Finn.
01:09:28Come and have a drink, my lad.
01:09:30Come on.
01:09:32You'll be tired pulling in no fish.
01:09:36You see, Finn, my lad,
01:09:38when you go after herring,
01:09:40you've got to have a skipper who knows his job.
01:09:46It's no good
01:09:48just sitting in a boat wearing a skipper's cap.
01:09:52That's the trouble
01:09:54with you East Coasters.
01:09:58You haven't got anyone who knows anything
01:10:00about the sea.
01:10:02When I sail with you, father,
01:10:04I sail with a real skipper.
01:10:06A real skipper.
01:10:10Not one who stole the girl and
01:10:12bent a member out of the way.
01:10:16A real skipper.
01:10:46Stop them.
01:11:08Let them file out.
01:11:16Come on.
01:11:26All right.
01:11:28Come on, all of you.
01:11:30It's the truth he was speaking,
01:11:32and you know it.
01:11:47I couldn't bear it
01:11:49if there were any trouble
01:11:51between you and Finn.
01:12:17Skipper.
01:12:29Looking bad.
01:12:33Glad you got back before the weather broke.
01:12:37Look at those clouds.
01:12:39Storming up.
01:12:46Finn!
01:12:48What are you doing in that boat?
01:12:50Where's Roddy?
01:12:52I left him at Stornow.
01:12:54Why did you leave the morning star?
01:12:56There's no room for Roddy in the insane boat.
01:13:16Why are you behaving like this?
01:13:20Stop behaving like a child.
01:13:22You're a man now.
01:13:42It's coming up fast.
01:13:44Let's get through this storm.
01:13:50It's herring that's weighing us down.
01:13:52That'll have to go.
01:13:54Dump the fish.
01:13:56But Roddy, if the herring go,
01:13:58I tell you, dump the fish.
01:14:08Dump the lunch.
01:14:14Dump the fish.
01:14:44A boat!
01:14:46She's in Stornow!
01:14:54Roddy!
01:15:08It's here!
01:15:10It's on the rocks!
01:15:12It's finished! Not a chance!
01:15:14What boat is it?
01:15:16The morning star!
01:15:36Throw the ropes down!
01:15:38It's useless! They're too far out!
01:15:42Give me the ropes!
01:15:44I'm going down!
01:16:12Roddy!
01:16:14Roddy!

01:19:46Well, well, get the other lads up.
01:20:00Is Finn safe?
01:20:04Yes, he's safe.
01:20:10There he is.
01:20:14You did well, sir.
01:20:16Ah, it's nothing.
01:20:18Thanks.
01:20:30And so, through storm and tragedy,
01:20:40they measured their strength and courage against the sea.
01:20:44As season followed season,
01:20:48they sent out bigger boats
01:20:50and built bigger curing stations.
01:20:52The people, once driven from the land to the sea,
01:20:56by tenacity and hard work,
01:21:00succeeded in making that rock-bound coast of Scotland
01:21:04the herring mistress of the world.
