00:00Are you Glaswegian?
00:01Oh, I love that you know right away.
00:04So when I was here in drama school,
00:05I tell a quick funny story because it's a funny story.
00:08I love these stories.
00:10It's not really for the camera, it's for you.
00:13I was in drama school, I was from New York,
00:16I'd never left New York in my life, I'm 19 years old,
00:19I have a very thick New York accent,
00:21and the drama teacher there casts me as Jimmy Boyle
00:26in a play called The Hard Man.
00:27I didn't know Jimmy Boyle from a hole in the wall.
00:30I didn't know how to do a Glaswegian accent either,
00:32but I worked at a gay bar to make some money,
00:34and the guy who worked at the gay bar with me,
00:36named Gary, was from Glasgow, and he said,
00:38I'll teach you the Glaswegian accent.
00:41So, like, not being particularly smart,
00:45I just learned Gary's accent, and I did,
00:48you know, for those of you who don't know,
00:51Jimmy Boyle was this, like, a guy who,
00:54it's a social experiment of a guy
00:56who was just one of the hardest criminals
00:58in Glasgow's history, killed people with screwdrivers,
01:01terribly, terribly tough man,
01:03that's why the play was called The Hard Man,
01:05and I went to the first day of rehearsal,
01:07and Judith Windsor, the very, very English acting teacher
01:11at RADA, who was actually from Alabama,
01:13said, why don't we start with the first monologue,
01:16and I got up, and in front of all of these English kids
01:19at this acting school, I did Gary's accent, and I went,
01:23there's so much that none of you can understand about me,
01:26and the world I come from,
01:27and there's dying to see if there's any way of killing it
01:29to finally get some standard bitterness and indifference,
01:32and Judith-
01:33Give me a clap, clap, I want a clap, everybody clap.
01:35Judith stopped me, Judith stopped me,
01:37and she said, well, Liev,
01:40in her completely fake, standard English accent,
01:43well, Liev, you've got the region,
01:46but you've missed the gender entirely.
01:48Oh my God, you'd learned it by Gary?
01:53Listen, I love that, I used to have in touch with Gary.
01:56Oh, sadly.
01:58I wonder what Gary's doing now.
01:59I don't know.
02:00But listen, well done you,
02:02because also, a Jimmy Boyle accent is proper Glasgow,
02:06like, mine's a little bit softer,
02:07because I've been in exile for 10 years,
02:10but that would be, like, hard.
02:14I think, to be honest with you,
02:16we need a redo now,
02:17and we need your character to be Scottish now.
02:19I don't think it's a bad idea.
02:21I think that would be good.
02:23I'm really glad you shared that,
02:24and well done.
02:25As long as he can also be camp.
02:27Yeah, exactly.
02:28Yeah, that's what we want, yeah.
02:29That's the only one I know.
02:30A camp Scottish hard man.
02:31The indifference and the bitterness.
02:34I'm gonna love it, literally.
02:37Listen, let's, after this,
02:39let's, like, you know,
02:40think of things that we can create.
02:42We can have a wee talk.
02:43I'm up for this.
02:44I love this, by the way.
02:45It's so binge-worthy,
02:47and I said to myself, I'm not gonna do it,
02:49because we get these before everybody else,
02:50and then the problem is,
02:51we binge them, and then the world binges them,
02:53and then you feel like you've kinda missed out.
02:55Yeah, yeah.
02:56So I was like, I'm gonna watch one.
02:57Did you get all of them?
02:58I got four.
02:58Okay, right.
02:59But I said, I'm gonna watch one,
03:00just to get a feel for it, get a vibe.
03:01Right, right, right, right, right.
03:02Up all night.
03:03Okay.
03:04It's so binge-worthy.
03:05Why have you done this to us?
03:07Because they're binge-worthy.
03:08Hey!
03:09No, because we had a feeling it would be fun.
03:13I mean, we, I don't know the answer to that.
03:15I had a feeling it would be fun.
03:17The big reason for me was Susanne Beer.
03:19Like, I just, Susanne,
03:22I just, I just wanted to work with her.
03:26I wanted to see what she does and how she does it.
03:29And Nicole is someone that I've always admired,
03:32a dear friend, and, you know,
03:36she's got the Midas touch,
03:38and I just thought, okay, I'll go along for this ride.
03:40And in the beginning, I was really nervous.
03:44I was, I didn't think,
03:46I was worried about a lot of elements.
03:49And sure enough, it's just the two of them
03:52powered it through,
03:53and Susanne and I really got into a lot of improv
03:56and sort of finding out who the cast members were
03:59and making it fun and making it feel
04:00like something real and compelling.
04:02And it was just an extraordinary cast.
04:05And, you know, three weeks in,
04:06I was like, yeah, they might have something.
04:09And what was Liev like as a dad?
04:13Terrible.
04:15The worst.
04:16He's terrible.
04:17Well, I mean, it's, I don't know.
04:18We have a complicated relationship
04:19because I really do think that...
04:22Are we talking about in real life right now
04:23or in the show?
04:24In the show.
04:26We'll just make it a cross, like a hybrid.
04:28No, in real life, he's amazing.
04:30I, he was so fun to hang out with.
04:34We played tennis a few times,
04:35and I mean, whatever, he's a great guy in real life.
04:38But in the show, he's, he's, he's...
04:42I have issues.
04:43He has issues.
04:43He's a pretty, like,
04:46a laissez-faire parent at times.
04:51And then will suddenly sort of crack down
04:55and say something annoying or mean.
04:57And it just turns my character
04:59into a really, really angry kid.
05:05But I think he does really,
05:08I think Tag does really love everyone in his family,
05:13despite how he may act sometimes.
05:17Yes.
05:18Well, I'm going to admit something here
05:19and I probably shouldn't, right?
05:20But I've started now.
05:22I am deeply attracted to Tag
05:23because that is my own issue.
05:25I know, I know, but this is the problem.
05:28This is why I'm single,
05:30because that's not sustainable.
05:31Toxic.
05:32Yeah, I love it, love it.
05:34You love toxic masculinity.
05:35Absolutely.
05:38It's my issue.
05:38I know, I'm working through it, guys.
05:40But he has been described as a dilf
05:42by people in the show, characters in the show.
05:45But I believe you said in the production notes
05:48that Nicole sort of bullied you into the part
05:50because you were like,
05:51it's not a part I'd normally take.
05:52Well, you know, when they write in the script
05:54that you're a dilf,
05:57that's a high watermark.
06:00You know, it's a high bar.
06:01And I, you know, it's like that kind of,
06:03you know, it's hard to do that.
06:06And if you're as insecure as I am in real life,
06:10it's not something that you want to try to do,
06:13because, not because you wouldn't like to be a dilf.
06:15I'd like to be a dilf.
06:16Who wouldn't want to be a dilf?
06:17But what if suddenly everyone's walking in?
06:18And what if everyone's like, him, dilf?
06:20That would be awful.
06:22What if you had walked in and you were like,
06:23I'm really attracted to dilfs,
06:24and I know for sure you're not one.
06:26You're not a dilf.
06:27There you go.
06:28That would have sucked.
06:29What would that have felt like if you had not said,
06:30and by the way, we're in the situation
06:32you were in a television interview.
06:33You've got to say nice things.
06:35I have to say nice things.
06:37So you said that you were attracted to tech.
06:40That may not be how you really feel.
06:42Listen, you have played a Scottish hardman.
06:46I'm from Glasgow.
06:47I don't care.
06:48I will say it how it is.
06:50If the show was terrible, I would have just went,
06:52okay, so congrats.
06:54I trust you.
06:55I trust you.
06:56Oh yeah, I trust you.
06:57So trust me.
06:59That was nerve wracking to me,
07:00because it's a lot,
07:01the setup is that he's this very
07:04sort of sexy, popular, rich guy.
07:07And I was like, that's a lot to ask of me.
07:12But why insecurity now that we've gone off?
07:14Because you're a handsome man.
07:15I don't know, because I'm an actor.
07:16That's how actors are.
07:17You're a very handsome man in real life.
07:18Do you think I'd be doing this for a living
07:19if I wasn't insecure?
07:21No, I'd be doing something smart.
07:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:23Guarantee my children a future and a legacy.
07:26Something sustainable.
07:27No, I wouldn't be prancing about
07:30and wearing screens and wearing makeup
07:33and occasionally dresses.
07:35Well, you're a very handsome man.
07:37That's what we'll say on that.
07:38What we need to talk about is something
07:39that I think is going to go viral.
07:41And it's actually pretty iconic from you all.
07:43And that is the dance sequence for the titles.
07:46I thought I was having a fever dream,
07:48because I thought, has that just happened?
07:50I've had a long day trying to get Oasis tickets.
07:52I was really stressed out.
07:54No, honestly.
07:55But, and I thought,
07:56and then when I got to the second episode,
07:58it appeared again.
07:58And I thought, that's the titles.
08:00Genius.
08:01But apparently none of you knew that this was
08:03what it was for, what was happening.
08:05From what I remember is the entire cast hated it.
08:10Yeah.
08:11Except for Sam.
08:12Except for us.
08:13Who were so excited that we got to dance.
08:17And I was extremely disappointed
08:19that we were not featured more in the credit sequence.
08:24Because both Sam and I,
08:25who have spent some time in the professional dance world,
08:29did a great job in that sequence.
08:31And it's not.
08:32There was a lift.
08:33He lifted me.
08:35There was a whole dirty dancing sequence
08:37that we really worked for, I want to say, two months on.
08:42And it was just cut.
08:44It was fun.
08:45It was really fun.
08:46And yeah, I thought it was a great idea.
08:49I feel robbed that we've not seen the last Netflix.
08:52Sort it out.
08:53We could do it, but there's a lot of...
08:56Yeah, safety first.
08:57We don't want HR coming in here, like, no.
09:01Talking about tennis,
09:03obviously you said that you've played that.
09:05That on a side note, when it comes to tennis,
09:06I feel like tennis has had the resurgence.
09:08Suddenly now everybody's playing tennis.
09:10Because when I'm on date naps, looking for toxic men,
09:13all they want is a tennis partner.
09:16Will you...
09:16All you want is a tennis partner.
09:18I know, that's what the men say.
09:19They're like all looking for a tennis partner.
09:21I think that's bullshit.
09:22Yeah.
09:23Right, right.
09:24Thank you, Sam.
09:25They want to go on a date with a girl.
09:27They don't want to play tennis.
09:28Looking for a doubles partner, right?
09:29Disguise, yeah.
09:30Sorry?
09:32For a dating setup.
09:33But did you...
09:34So, were you tennis fans before you...
09:36Or was the tennis the bond?
09:36How did you know that we played tennis?
09:37You told me!
09:38I said it.
09:39You said it? When?
09:40I said, Liam's a great guy.
09:42We played tennis together.
09:43Oh, he did say that.
09:43Are you in the room?
09:44That is the accent.
09:47It's bringing PTSD in.
09:48You know, we played tennis.
09:49I had no idea what either of you were saying.
09:50But what you...
09:51He introduced me to the new sport
09:54that's taking the world by storm, which is...
09:56Tennis for old people.
09:57What's it called?
09:58Pickleball.
09:59Right, what's this?
10:00That's what I maybe needed to say when I...
10:02I can't play prom or tennis, but I'll play this.
10:04Pickleball is like mini tennis.
10:07It's like half the court,
10:10and you play with like...
10:11Racquetball rackets.
10:12Yeah.
10:13And a wiffle ball with holes in it.
10:15This is a whole new world for me.
10:17It's so fun.
10:18I like tennis, but pickleball's fun.
10:21Yeah.
10:22Well, when the guys on Dating Apps
10:22are looking for a tennis partner,
10:24I'll be like, but have you played pickleball?
10:25Yeah.
10:26Ooh, they're gonna think that's a euphemism.
10:29I mean, everything I say they think is a euphemism
10:32because it's Martha from Baby Reindeer.
10:33I have no idea what you're saying.
10:34It's a euphemism.
10:35Anyway, I'm not gonna quote Martha.
10:37Just finally then, what was it like
10:39being a part of this amazing cast
10:41and the whole murder mystery thing?
10:43Because it's just, honestly,
10:45I think that show's gonna be massive.
10:47It was amazing.
10:48I mean, we were staying all around Cape Cod
10:52and we all were really good friends
10:55and we all did fun things together.
10:57Like we all went whale watching and like to Provincetown.
11:00And it was like being on holiday.
11:04You know, it was really fun
11:05just getting to hang out with everyone.
11:06And I admire everyone in the cast so much.
11:09That's why I did the show is because of Susannah
11:13and all the actors are so amazing.
11:15It was so cool to just get to shoot the show with them
11:18and like go to nice seafood restaurants
11:20and, you know, play tennis.
11:22It was great.
11:23But you also did the show
11:24because you wanted to show off your dance moves as well.
11:25And that, which is why I'm furious
11:28as to how that has turned out.
11:29But I'll take that up with-
11:32It was a great summer.
11:33The suits.
11:33And, you know, part of the reason it was a great summer
11:35is because it was not free from adversity.
11:38We had the strikes.
11:39Yeah.
11:41We had, you know,
11:42we had to stop the production a couple of times
11:44and, you know-
11:45COVID.
11:46And there was just a ways that we found to get around it.
11:49The improvising,
11:50the, you know, the working together,
11:54the kind of helping each other.
11:55There was a very, you know,
11:57you never know if you're going to get that in an ensemble.
12:00And we got that.
12:01Like people liked each other,
12:02genuinely liked each other.
12:03And so they'd make space for other people's work.
12:06And when that happens, things go well.
12:08You know, it's like everyone genuinely thought
12:11the other person was entertaining.
12:15And, you know, when Jack would go on like a tear
12:16of his like foul mouth improvs,
12:18we would open the floor for it.
12:21And it was great.
12:22And I think everybody had that within a few weeks,
12:24had figured out how the other people worked.
12:27And when you get a group of actors working in that way,
12:29something special usually happens.
12:31Well, the show is very, very special.
12:32Guys, I've loved this.
12:33I feel like we've covered a lot here
12:36and I feel like it's almost been about therapeutic
12:38this chat as well for me.
12:39Definitely.
12:40I'm going to go work on myself
12:42and I'm also going to go and email all the execs at Netflix
12:45and say, release the dance footage.
12:47Yeah.
12:49Either release the dance footage or pull the show.
12:51It's not worth seeing without.
12:53Enough's enough.
12:54I'm a woman of the people.
12:55I'll get that sorted.
12:57Thank you so much for your time.
12:59Good to meet you.
