00:00Golden Lion for Best Film goes to The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodóvar.
00:07Cheers and applause, as Pedro Almodóvar was declared the winner of the prestigious Golden
00:11Lion award.
00:13Starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, his film The Room Next Door tackles the theme
00:17of euthanasia, an issue the Spanish director wants to see more widely discussed.
00:26The film talks about a woman, Tilda Swinton, who's the master of her life when she's alive,
00:31but also the master of her death when she's alive, and I believe that this is a fundamental
00:35human right.
00:42It's a debate that needs to be more widely discussed, and above all I understand that
00:46according to many faiths, God is the only one who can take your life, but I would ask
00:51all those believers to respect individual decisions.
01:01Almodóvar's film is not the only one at this year's festival to grapple with difficult
01:04subject matter, with other films centring on topics ranging from killings during Brazil's
01:09military dictatorship to US neo-Nazis.
01:13Familiar Touch, a film about living with dementia, won the award for Best Debut Feature.
01:19US director Sarah Friedland used her acceptance speech to talk about the war in Gaza.
01:25As a Jewish American artist working in a time-based medium, I believe it is our responsibility
01:31as film workers to use the institutional platforms through which we work to redress Israel's
01:36impunity on the global stage.
01:38I stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and their struggle for liberation.
01:45Coming out on top in the acting category were Nicole Kidman and Francis Vincent Landon
01:50for his role in The Quiet Son, a drama in which he plays a single father attempting
01:54to steer his son away from far-right extremism.
01:58Meanwhile Lady Gaga, who features with Joaquin Phoenix in the sequel to Todd Phillips' Joker,
02:04walked away empty-handed.
02:06As did Brad Pitt, whose crime thriller Wolves, with George Clooney, nonetheless received
02:11a four-minute standing ovation after its premiere at the festival.
