00:00All right, come with me to Eastern Washington.
00:02This time, I'm doing a keynote for a doctor's conference.
00:05First thing first, check into a hotel.
00:07St. Katie Lodge, I love you.
00:08And then you go ahead and get a badge.
00:10That way, you're official.
00:11Now, the day before the presentation,
00:13I always want to get to know the audience a little bit.
00:15So I go to the cocktail hour and do magic
00:17because, you know, I want them to like me
00:20before I even keynote the next morning.
00:22And then I go back to the hotel and do some rehearsal,
00:25basically talking to myself like a crazy person.
00:30Now, in my presentation, I use a lot of camera work.
00:33So I have a 6 a.m. sound check.
00:35The night before, I did all the camera setup.
00:38That way, it's easier for me the next morning
00:40at 5 a.m. to go see the beautiful sunrise over here,
00:44walk into the conference room, and do my setup.
00:47And here is my setup.
00:48I've got a laptop, hook up to an ATEM Mini,
00:51hook up to a Teradact, hook up to a camera remotely.
00:54That way, I can switch between my camera feed
00:57and my PowerPoint slide with just a touch of a button.
01:00Boom, just like that.
01:02And we are good to go.
01:04And then I sit in the back, wait for the introduction.
01:07When 8.05 a.m. comes around, here we go.
01:10Showtime, let's do it.
01:13Don't you agree that having empathy
01:16and being empathetic is a human nature?
01:19It's just that from volunteering at Crisis Line,
01:22I learned there are communication techniques
01:25that can amplify your empathy
01:28to make someone truly feel cared for,
01:31listened to, understood, and empowered.
01:35Because this jar right here is actually not empty.
01:39This jar is actually filled to the brim with water.
01:43But once the water is out of the jar, though,
01:47now I can show you how this is done.
01:50The jar goes back into the bag over here,
01:53and the cube goes into the bag over here.
01:55One, two, three.
02:02Can you hear it?
02:03Can you hear it, Mark?
02:03Watch, inside the bag over here,
02:05all the way, the jar and the cube
02:06has now completely combined as one thing over here.
02:10That is how we do this, okay?
02:13Give Mark a big hand right here, yes!
02:15You see, when we were so focused
02:18on how to solve the problem,
02:20we did not even notice that the jar
02:23was full of water already.
02:26My question for you is,
02:29how do you think someone feel
02:31when they're stressed, when they're overwhelmed?
02:36Right?
02:37So the first technique we learned from Crisis Line
02:39is that you must avoid jumping
02:42into problem solving immediately.
02:45Spend the first couple of moments
02:46to truly connect with the other person.
02:48Listen first, quote unquote,
02:51let them dump their water first.
02:54When you make a snappy judgment on something
02:57before you see it from the right perspective,
03:00you might get it wrong.
03:02And the same thing actually happens in communication
03:05because when you make a snappy judgment
03:09on another person before you see things
03:12from their perspective,
03:14before you understand their perspective,
03:18are you getting the full picture?
03:20Thank you, y'all, have a good day.
03:21Thank you!
03:22So that's a day in the life of a keynote speaker.
03:32I'll see you next time.
