00:04DRAGON NAMES
00:05By Yu-Mei
00:06Master, thought Sir George.
00:11His hair standing on end, Sir George reminded himself that the monster could turn on him
00:15or flee at any moment.
00:18But after he clicked the bridal rein into place, he was relieved to see the dragon meekly
00:22walk by his side, like a dog on a leash.
00:26After fetching his spear he caught sight of the sword Ascalon, half buried under rubble.
00:32As he reached for it, the dragon scooped it up in her mouth and offered it to him.
00:37The blade was badly in need of a polish and would have to be sharpened, but to his relief
00:42it hadn't been smashed or twisted by the falling rocks.
00:46As they left the caves behind and stepped out of the pond, the dragon surprised him
00:50by shaking herself like a dog.
00:53Sir George winced as a droplet of water flew into his eye.
00:57Don't do that, beast!
00:59The dragon scraped her claws against the ground and shivered, as though awaiting a blow.
01:04I'm sorry, my master.
01:06Seeing her fear, Sir George softened his tone.
01:09Master, you call me?
01:11Well what should I call you, dragon?
01:14The dragon cautiously opened one eye, still expecting a thrashing.
01:18What is wrong with calling me dragon?
01:20It is a good word.
01:22With a light tug on the leash, Sir George led her into the grove.
01:26Well it'd be like calling every man I meet, man, and him calling me, man.
01:31Without names, it'd be confusing.
01:33The dragon nodded, then curled her frilled ears behind her.
01:37But, you don't know any other dragons, do you?
01:40Sir George scratched his head.
01:42As he did, his grip on the leash tightened, and to his surprise, the dragon immediately
01:47came alongside him, brushing against his leg.
01:51Already she was responding to the leash better than the finest hound he'd ever trained.
01:56Well no, but I should still know your name so I can speak to you properly.
02:00But you spoke to me very properly in the cave, without knowing my name.
02:04Without even knowing that I was a dragon.
02:06Sir George examined their surroundings.
02:09He realized that, by sending Bayard home, he had sent most of his camping equipment
02:13along with him.
02:15He had not planned on spending the night in the woods with a dragon.
02:19Well amongst knights, it's considered a matter of honor to share our name when asked, except
02:23in the most urgent of circumstances.
02:26Do dragons not share their names?
02:28Or do you not have a name?
02:29Her cat-like eyes brightened as she looked up, like an expectant puppy.
02:33Oh.
02:34I understand, Honor.
02:36I would love to share my name with you.
02:39But it is difficult, for we dragons have many names.
02:42The people of your country have named me Angele Twyche.
02:45Angele Twyche?
02:47After the red worm?
02:48Angele Twyche raised her tail like a dog ready to play, then started to strut.
02:53Is that what it means?
02:55I like it even more now.
02:57Though, the Maggi girl called me Angel when she came to the caves, calling for me to come
03:01out.
03:02Sir George suddenly remembered from his conversation with the village girl.
03:06That's right, she said you attacked an outlaw who was after her.
03:09I assumed you were hunting for both and caught him by happenstance.
03:13Angele Twyche shook her head.
03:15No.
03:16I knew the smell of the Maggi girl from the village, but the outlaw man had a foul smell.
03:21After I dropped him, that was the first time she named me Angel.
03:25Well then is Angel your name?
03:26It is one of them now.
03:28Is that what your mother and father call you?
03:30The dragon's ears flicked up in alarm, then cocked at a curious angle as she considered
03:35the question, then finally flopped down in meek surrender.
03:40Not sure what else to do, Sir George tried petting the dragon's neck, feeling stupid.
03:46Immediately, she responded to the touch, angling her head to guide his hand to the spot between
03:51her two horns.
03:53As he patted her head at the right spot, she purred, and finally found her tongue.
03:58That is not an easy question to answer.
04:01Dragons have hundreds of names.
04:03For each season of life, a different name.
04:06It will take many nights to tell you all my names, Sir George squinted.
04:11Very well.
04:12Then is there just one name you like best of all to be called?
04:15The dragon's ears perked up again at this question, but then she caught sight of a butterfly.
04:21Just before Sir George was about to repeat the question, she snapped her head back to
04:24face him.
04:26My barber used to call me, Tianshu.
04:29I always used to like the sound of that name, especially the way he said it.
04:33Sir George's ears perked at the strange sound of the name.
04:37Tianshu.
04:38The dragon shook her head.
04:40No, Tianshu.
04:42Sir George felt his tongue trip over the odd sounds.
04:46Tianshin?
04:47The dragon sighed with disappointment.
04:49It doesn't sound the same.
04:51Well what does it mean?
04:53Angeltwick closed her eyes, smiling wanly.
04:55It has many meanings.
04:57Before Sir George could argue the point, he saw Angeltwicky become alert, pointing her
05:02snout as she spotted a horse ahead of them.
05:05Bayard had returned.
05:07Sir George rolled his head back and laughed.
05:10Bayard.
05:11You prince among horses.
05:12I should have known you'd never abandon.
05:15Suddenly remembering the carnivorous dragon at his side, he glanced down just in time
05:19to catch her licking her lips and grabbed her by the horn.
05:22No.
05:23You are not to eat that horse.
05:25Nor harm him, nor frighten him.
05:27He is a loyal friend.
05:30Angeltwick hunched her shoulders and her tail hung between her legs.
05:33No, master, I mean, yes, master.
05:37Yes, I will obey you, so, no, I will not eat him.
05:42Curiously, Bayard approached, braying joyfully at the sight of his rider, but snorting furiously
05:47at the hint of sulphur in the air that warned him of the dragon.
05:52George tugged gently at the dragon's leash, and Angeltwick lowered her head submissively.
05:57Satisfied, Bayard cantered to George's side.
06:02Glancing at the dragon's humiliating position, Sir George felt conflicted.
06:07Yes, the dragon was accused of various crimes, and was almost certainly guilty of poaching
06:12livestock, but his memory of the promise he made in the cave haunted him.
06:17When he'd imagined Angeltwick as a human woman in need of rescue, he hadn't imagined hauling
06:22that woman home on a leash.
06:24Dragon, why must you call me master?
06:27You're a prisoner, but you're not my slave.
06:29I must call you master, because under the law of dragons, you are my master.
06:34I surrender to you of my own free will.
06:37Well, suppose I ask you to call me Sir George, and not master?
06:41If you order me to never call you master, then I will never call you master again.
06:45But I do so because you are my master.
06:48Bayard blew his lips in an almost human laugh.
06:52The dragon opened its jaws wide and made a low rumbling chirp noise, lolling its forked
06:56tongue.
06:58Sir George tensed before a strange thought occurred to him.
07:01Was Angeltwick laughing?
07:03Fruh!
07:04I like this Bayard, Prince of Horses.
07:07He has a sense of humor, master, oops!
07:10I mean, Sir George.
07:13It is hard to remember that my master is never to be called master.
07:17I'm afraid you shall have to beat me soundly until I remember.
07:20As Angeltwick lowered herself to present her back to receive his blows, Sir George rolled
07:25his eyes and settled down on a bedroll.
07:29Fine.
07:30Have it your way, dragon.
07:32But no beatings.
07:33I would like you to call me Sir George.
07:35I am not ordering you.
07:37I am asking you, if you would like to, because it will make me happier.
07:41The dragon pulled its lips back.
07:43Sir George recoiled, wondering if it was about to snap at him, before he recognized it as
07:48a smile.
07:50Very well, Sir George.
07:52I will remember to call you that.
07:54If I sometimes forget, and call you master by mistake, will you whip me?
07:59Sir George glanced down at the bridle, remembering that the dragon had initially thought of it
08:03as a lash.
08:04No, I shall try to not be cross with you, if you forget, dragon.
08:08The dragon's smile widened.
08:10Each of her teeth could rip the flesh from the bones of an ox.
08:13So, I am free to call you whatever I wish?
08:17Sir George wondered if this was a trick question.
08:19He had heard tales of dragons' love for riddling talk.
08:23You are always free to call me whatever you wish, dragon, if you're not afraid of a whipping.
08:28But I will not whip you for calling me, master, if that is your wish.
08:32With another rumble of draconic laughter, Anjeltwik rested her head on his lap.
08:36A delightful answer, Sir George.
08:40It is not a shameful thing, amongst dragons, to have a master.
08:44So, thank you, Sir George, for granting me the liberty to call you my master.
08:49We dragons prize our freedom.
08:51Then why did you agree to surrender to me, dragon?
08:54She lifted her head from his lap and gazed down on him with the fixed gaze of a predator.
09:00As long as he was seated, she towered over him.
09:04Sir George subconsciously gripped the sheath of Ascalon, ready to draw it in a flash.
09:09Because, Sir George, you spoke to me with the same voice as the man who spoke to me
09:14in the cave.
09:15Remembering the voice of the frightened maiden in the cave, Sir George loosened his grip
09:19on his hilt.
09:20Say, what if I called you, Angel, the same name Maggie called you?
09:25You seem to like that one.
09:27The dragon cocked her head.
09:29I love that name.
09:30She said it so prettily.
09:32What does Angel mean?
09:34An angel is a winged messenger, a celestial being who serves God.
09:38The dragon narrowed her eyes.
09:40Which God?
09:41Sir George made the sign of the cross and gestured to the world around them, thinking
09:45the answer perfectly obvious.
09:48The one, true God, of course.
09:51God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
09:54So, there are three Gods, then?
09:57Each of them is your one, true, God?
10:00No.
10:01Not three Gods.
10:02One God, in three persons, in perfect unity.
10:06The dragon cocked her head to the other side.
10:08My barber told me the God your people worship was named Yesujidu.
10:12Are you not one of the Nazarenes?
10:14Sir George struggled with the unfamiliar sounds.
10:17But their meaning clicked into place as he recognized the word, Nazareth.
10:22Yes.
10:23Yesus Christus.
10:24He is called Jesus of Nazareth, or Christ, in our tongue.
10:28So, this man from Nazarene is your one, true God?
10:31Is he the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit you speak of?
10:35No.
10:36Yesus Christus is the Son of God, incarnate.
10:39God the Father is his Father.
10:41The dragon raised an eyebrow.
10:43Then what is God the Holy Spirit?
10:45Is it his ghost?
10:47Sir George swallowed, struggling to find an answer.
10:50It would be centuries before St. Brendan the Navigator would receive a mermaid into
10:55communion with the Christian Church.
10:57But Sir George was motivated by the same missionary fervor.
11:01The conversion of a dragon to the true faith would be a momentous omen.
11:06Unfortunately, though he had faithfully attended Mass since his first catechism, the blessed
11:11mysteries of the Trinity were not Sir George's strong suit.
11:16He was the direct sort of fighting man of a simpler age.
11:19No, Jesus is not a ghost.
11:21God the Holy Spirit is, the Helper.
11:23The Friend sent by the Father to aid us all.
11:26Sir George searched the dragon's face.
11:28But whether or not she found his explanation compelling, she hid it well.
11:33It is a mysterious creed.
11:35We have heard little of the Nazarene himself in my home, though much of the followers of
11:39his tau.
11:40Wasn't he a fisherman?
11:42Sir George nodded, hoping to expound more doctrine, before remembering Jesus was not
11:47a fisherman.
11:48No, he was a carpenter.
11:50Some of his disciples were fishermen.
11:52In the Gospel of...
11:53But before he could recount the parable of the fishes, Angele Twick interrupted him.
11:58Excuse me, but what is a carpenter?
12:01Sir George looked to his horse, who seemed equally befuddled, before answering.
12:05You don't know what a carpenter is?
12:07It's a man who builds things from wood.
12:09Tables, chairs, buildings.
12:12Build...ings?
12:13Those flimsy things made from dead trees that you keep your food in?
12:17I keep knocking them down by accident.
12:20Did a carpenter build those?
12:21Well, I suppose one must have, but...
12:24Ay-yah!
12:25That must be why your god, the carpenter, has been so cross with me.
12:30No wonder I've had such rotten luck in your country.
12:33I'm always knocking into things.
12:35It's this cursed tail.
12:37I always forget it's back there.
12:39The dragon lifted her own tail and slapped it soundly three times, adding a sharp flick
12:43of her wrist to each swat.
12:46She then set her tail down firmly, staring at it as though her own tail was a naughty
12:51child in need of censure.
12:54Then she turned her attention back to Sir George and bared as if nothing had happened.
12:58Dooboochee.
12:59I'm so sorry.
13:01What were we talking about?
13:02Sir George struggled to remember how precisely he had ended up discussing theology in the
13:07woods with a mad dragon.
13:09Um...
13:10A puff of smoke erupted from Angel Twig's nostrils.
13:13That's it?
13:14You wish to name me Angel?
13:16And an angel is a slave of your god.
13:18Well, I do not know your god, but since you serve this god, and since I am your slave,
13:24I suppose it is a fitting name for me.
13:26Sir George groaned.
13:28You are not my slave, Angel Twish.
13:30You are my captive.
13:32And Angel Twig stroked her chin.
13:34What is captive under your law, Sir George?
13:37To be honest, Sir George knew of no laws, whether secular or ecclesiastical, that dealt
13:43with his precise situation.
13:45It means you must face justice for the harm you've caused.
13:48And Angel Twig's throat rumbled, and her whine was like an expectant dog's.
13:52Is this because you do not know if I am a good dragon, or a bad dragon, yet?
13:57Sir George huffed and laid his head on his bedroll, not wanting to bother with a blanket
14:02in the summer night air.
14:04Lying next to Angel, he realized her body seemed to radiate a fiery heat.
14:09Yes, Angel.
14:10Tomorrow, we will decide if you are a good dragon, or a bad dragon.
14:15But as for tonight, I am exhausted.
14:17As dusk settled, Angel's eyes flickered with an inner light that stood out against the
14:22twilight-blue sky.
14:24You called me, Angel?
14:26Is that my name?
14:27Wondering if he would ever get to sleep, Sir George rolled to face away.
14:32Hopefully this dragon really was evil, and would eat him quickly in his sleep to end
14:37his suffering.
14:39Yes.
14:40Angel is your name, if it pleases you.
14:42He heard her whisper softly in his ear, and felt her forked tongue.
14:47If the name Angel pleases my master, then it pleases me.
14:50Rushing away the tongue, Sir George turned to face his tormentor.
14:54Yes, it pleases me.
14:56I think it's a lovely name.
14:58And it's not a name for a slave.
15:00It's a name for a magnificent, glorious creature.
15:03An emissary of the Most High.
15:05A winged messenger of the King of Kings.
15:08An emissary?
15:09A winged messenger?
15:11That is an angel?
15:12I love this name.
15:14It honors me.
15:15Sir George threw up his hands in surrender.
15:18Very good.
15:19It only took us one day, but your name is Angel.
15:23Now go to sleep, Angel, or I'll spank you.
15:26He meant it as an empty threat, not really sure that the word would mean anything to
15:30a dragon.
15:32And even if it did, the very idea of spanking a fire-breathing dragon seemed like an absurd
15:38impossibility.
15:40But at the mention of spanking, Angel immediately hunched to the ground, curling up like a cat
15:45at Sir George's side, her tail across his feet, her head resting on his chest.
15:50Yes, Sir George.
15:52As Angel closed her eyes, he suddenly felt the warmth radiating from her belly and nostrils
15:57as a comforting presence.
16:00Even loyal Bayard had fallen asleep, still standing a silent vigil near his master, his
16:05breathing steady.
16:07The thought at the back of Sir George's mind, that this dragon was going to eat him at any
16:12moment, did not vanish.
16:14But a hidden instinct told him he was safe.
16:18Angel had given her word.
16:20Sir George felt the exhaustion of his long day of adventuring catch up with him all at
16:24once, and he began to drift off to sleep.
16:28Purring, Angel thought about her new name, and remembered all her old names.
16:34Tomorrow, Master will tell me if I am a good dragon, or a bad dragon.
16:38If I am a good dragon, I wish to live.
16:41If I am a bad dragon, I am ready to die.
16:44I wonder if Master will kill me?
16:46Ay-yah!
16:47I cannot wait to find out.
16:49Good night, Sir George.
16:52For the first time in many, many years, Angel slept peacefully.
