1960s John Wayne PSA Savings Bonds TV commercial. A typical John Wayne-esque commercial - patriotism from a guy who used influence to escape WW2 service. Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Gene Autry served, but the "TOUGH GUY" - Marion Michael Morrison (aka John Wayne) got the studio to put pressure on the government for his benefit.

Henry Fonda ENLISTED as a sailor, and then went to Officer training school. All of his other classmates were made Ensigns, but Henry was made a Lieutenant JG, simply because he was so much older than his classmates.

I mentioned Henry's story because some people claim that John Wayne was too old to serve - B.S. Henry was 2 years older. Henry was also married - just like the so-called "TOUGH GUY" (aka John Wayne)

00:00Hello, folks. This is a strange colored outfit for a man of my political persuasion, but we're making a picture called the Hellfighters.
00:11However, I'm not here to talk about that. I'm going to tell you how I feel about some mighty good men, Army National Guardsmen.
00:19You can judge their caliber by the mere fact that they're all volunteers. Citizen soldiers, as they're called, have served in every war involving the United States.
00:29Army Guardsmen are right now fighting beside their active Army counterparts to prevent the spread of aggression.
00:36For many of these men, a mobilization means great personal sacrifice, but they accept that challenge willingly.
00:44They're dedicated to the stars and stripes and what it stands for.
00:48Don't kid yourself. These fellas are professionals, and they're performing a vital job for the United States.
00:55Now, I don't know about you, but I appreciate that kind of an American.
