00:00:04Golden grand piano, my beautiful Castillo
00:00:08You, you, you, I'd leave it all
00:00:16My acres of the land that I've achieved
00:00:20It may be hard for you to stop and believe, but for you
00:00:24You, you, you, I'd leave it all
00:00:31Give me one good reason why I should never make a change
00:00:39Baby, if you hold me then all of this will go away
00:00:47My many artifacts, the list goes on
00:00:51If you just say the words, I, I'll up and run to you
00:00:56You, you, you, I'd leave it all
00:01:04Give me one good reason why I should never make a change
00:01:12Baby, if you hold me then all of this will go away
00:01:20Give me one good reason why I should never make a change
00:01:27Baby, if you hold me then all of this will go away
00:01:36My friends and family, they don't understand
00:01:39They feel there's so much at stake right now
00:01:57They were merged together to become Budapest
00:02:01And on this side of the river, this is the Buda side
00:02:05The side with the hill and the castle
00:02:10That overlooks the river
00:02:12And the Pest side on the other, which is quite flat
00:02:17Flat
00:02:25Yeah, we're going to pull up here to meet our guys
00:02:31We are quite early, done quite well for the time
00:02:34Zori, you can call me Zori or whatever you want, but I won't listen
00:02:40And now we are going to a parking place
00:02:43And from there we will have a walk
00:02:46Some steps, upstairs
00:02:49And then some elevator, upstairs, upward
00:02:53For example, close to Cape Town
00:02:58I heard that you are from there as well
00:03:03And not so warm like in Australia
00:03:08OK
00:03:10So it's quite a big city in Hungary, the biggest city
00:03:15And it's right in the center of the country
00:03:20And actually it's quite an old city
00:03:23The Celts used to live here in the old times
00:03:28So the Celts used to live here in the old times
00:03:32And in the old times we have some historical remnants from them
00:03:37On the Gellért Hill, there is a small museum
00:03:40Where you can see these things
00:03:43And then came the Romans
00:03:45And they named the city, the town Akvinkum
00:03:50And Akvinkum means reaching water
00:03:54Why is that?
00:03:56Because many springs, mostly hot springs can be found here in Budapest
00:04:01And if you are lucky and you have brought your swimming suit
00:04:05You can taste this water
00:04:09You can try this water
00:04:11Going to a spa where you can swim or just relax
00:04:17And you can come back in winter and play chess in the pool
00:04:21Open air pool, 40 degrees in the water
00:04:24So it's quite nice
00:04:26So Akvinkum, reaching water
00:04:30And then in 896
00:04:34It is said that the Hungarians arrived to Hungary
00:04:39In the Carpathian Basin
00:04:41The Carpathians are a mountain range
00:04:45That is located in Romania, Slovakia and Poland mostly
00:04:53And it describes quite a big semicircle
00:04:57And the Hungarians occupied this area
00:05:10So 896, that is said to be the first founding
00:05:19First founding of Hungary
00:05:22The second founding was in 1241
00:05:27Because the Mongolians were coming from Asia
00:05:32And they attacked a lot of countries here in Europe
00:05:36And in this year, 1241
00:05:40They attacked the Hungarians
00:05:42The Hungarian population
00:05:44And the Hungarians lost a big fight
00:05:48And then even the king had to leave the country
00:05:52Even the crown had to leave the country
00:05:56But when he came back from Dalmatia
00:05:59From the Croatia of today
00:06:01He reconstructed the country
00:06:04Because then all the houses were made either of wood
00:06:08Or materials that could be burned easily
00:06:14So he is called the second founder of the country
00:06:19Now we are at the foot of the Gellért Hill
00:06:24The Gellért Hill is on the right
00:06:26In Hungarian we call it Gellért Mountain
00:06:29Because it's quite big here in the city
00:06:32But actually it's only a hill, it's about 60 meters high
00:06:36It's named after a bishop
00:06:40Who came from Venice, from Italy
00:06:44And he wanted to go to Jerusalem
00:06:48But he had a strange dream
00:06:50And because of this strange dream
00:06:52He changed his route
00:06:54And he came to Hungary
00:06:56And here in Hungary he met our first king
00:06:59St. Stephen
00:07:02But at that time St. Stephen wasn't a saint yet
00:07:05He was canonized later
00:07:07But anyway he was a good king
00:07:09A very famous king in Hungary at that time
00:07:11And the king asked him to stay here
00:07:13To remain with him
00:07:15And he became the tutor of his son
00:07:19And he helped the king to convert the people to Christianity
00:07:25Until then the Hungarians were pagan people
00:07:28So they believed in several gods
00:07:43So now I'm wondering what's happening here in the back
00:07:46But hopefully it will be okay
00:07:50So after the death of St. Stephen
00:07:54Our first king, who was crowned in 1000
00:07:59Bishop Gellért, Gerardus in Latin
00:08:02Was caught by the pagans
00:08:04He was put in a barrel
00:08:07I don't think it's a good idea
00:08:10And he was thrown into the Danube
00:08:12The Danube is the river of Budapest
00:08:15It originates in Germany
00:08:17In the Black Forest
00:08:20And it is traversing Budapest
00:08:22Along about 25 kilometers
00:08:25Then it's going further
00:08:28It's touching Serbia
00:08:30Touching Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine
00:08:34And all together it is going through 10 countries
00:08:37And then it arrives to the Black Sea in Romania
00:08:42So from the Black Forest
00:08:44It's going to the Black Sea
00:08:47So he was thrown into the Danube
00:08:49In a barrel
00:08:51And then he was
00:08:55Buried in the church
00:08:57Near one of the most elegant bridges of Budapest
00:09:03That is the Elizabeth Bridge
00:09:05Okay, a new name for you
00:09:07Elizabeth
00:09:08Who is this Elizabeth?
00:09:10Elizabeth was the wife of Francis Joseph
00:09:14The emperor of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire
00:09:18And now let's get back to 896
00:09:22The Hungarians are said to come from Asia
00:09:24Like the Mongolians
00:09:27They had a few years
00:09:29More than 200 with the Turkish people
00:09:32They had more than 100 years
00:09:34With the Slavic people
00:09:36From whom they learned agriculture
00:09:39And after so many
00:09:41Adventurous centuries
00:09:45The Hungarians arrived here in 896
00:09:49And they were a pagan people
00:09:51They had many problems
00:09:53With the Christian people from around
00:09:55So they realized that
00:09:57If they want to be happy
00:09:59To be safe in these surroundings
00:10:02In this neighborhood
00:10:04They have to become Christians
00:10:07So they asked the Pope from Rome
00:10:09To send them a crown
00:10:12The Pope said okay
00:10:14Guys, I will send you a crown
00:10:17And our first king was crowned in 1000
00:10:20And that is St. Stephen
00:10:22Our first king
00:10:25And after that
00:10:27His family was ruling the country
00:10:29Until 1301
00:10:33So at the very beginning of the 14th century
00:10:351301
00:10:37More than 300 years
00:10:39Little bit more than 300 years
00:10:42And then this family died out
00:10:46So no more heir to the crown
00:10:48They needed somebody
00:10:50From abroad
00:10:52And they found a very distant relation
00:10:55With some French connections
00:10:59And this king
00:11:01King from the French connection
00:11:03From the Angevin house
00:11:05Anjou, maybe you have heard of the Anjou house
00:11:08He became the first foreign king of Hungary
00:11:14They ruled for about
00:11:17200 years
00:11:19And then
00:11:21The Turks were longing for us
00:11:24And they came here to
00:11:26In this area
00:11:28And in 1526
00:11:30Another difficult fight
00:11:32With the foreign people
00:11:34With the Turks
00:11:36And we lost
00:11:38And usually the Hungarians lost
00:11:40Every battle
00:11:42During their history
00:11:44Every battle, every revolution
00:11:46Every uprising
00:11:48And even the final football match
00:11:50In Bern in Switzerland in 1954
00:11:54So we are not a lucky country
00:11:57Ok, so after the Turks defeated the Hungarians
00:12:02In 1526
00:12:04Two thirds of the country became
00:12:06Went under Turkish occupation
00:12:08And one
00:12:10One third was occupied
00:12:12By the Habsburgs
00:12:14And then
00:12:16We started to like
00:12:18In quotation marks the Habsburgs
00:12:22And the Habsburgs stayed here
00:12:24Until very late
00:12:26Until 1948
00:12:28Sorry, 1914
00:12:32And actually
00:12:34Until 1918
00:12:36When the First World War ended
00:12:38And the Hungarians
00:12:40Didn't like the Habsburgs
00:12:42They always revolted against them
00:12:44They organized wars
00:12:46Against the Habsburgs
00:12:48And then the Habsburgs realized
00:12:50That this is not good for them
00:12:52And they agreed with these bloody Hungarians
00:12:56So then in 1876
00:13:00It's a very important year
00:13:02In the Hungarian history
00:13:04There was the so called compromise
00:13:06The big agreement between Hungary
00:13:08And Austria
00:13:10What did this mean?
00:13:12This meant that the Hungarians
00:13:14Could have separate ministries
00:13:16Separate economy
00:13:18And separate
00:13:20Decision making
00:13:22Except for the war issues
00:13:24Because the war
00:13:26The war issues were decided
00:13:28By the emperor in Vienna
00:13:30The golden era
00:13:32Of the Hungarians
00:13:34And that was the period
00:13:36When many, many, many
00:13:38And many big and beautiful
00:13:40And rich buildings were built
00:13:42Constructed here in Budapest
00:13:44So all the big buildings
00:13:46The National Museum
00:13:48The Parliament
00:13:50The Museum of Ethnography
00:13:52Institute of Geology
00:13:54So you know
00:13:56The big and important buildings
00:13:58Were built in that period
00:14:04And in 1896
00:14:06After 1000 years
00:14:08Of the first founding
00:14:10The first arrival here in Hungary
00:14:12They wanted to
00:14:14They wanted to
00:14:16Celebrate this event
00:14:18And they organized a millenary
00:14:20Millenary events
00:14:22And that is the
00:14:24Hero square about
00:14:26We are going there later
00:14:28Okay
00:14:30In about one minute we are getting off
00:14:32The bus
00:14:34You don't need any
00:14:36Any package with you
00:14:38Only your photo
00:14:40Your camera
00:14:42Water maybe
00:14:44But as I told you
00:14:46You have water in the castle district
00:14:48We will have to climb some steps
00:14:50Maybe bring a cap with you
00:14:54And upstairs in the castle district
00:14:56We will have some walk
00:15:00So here is our parking place
00:15:02On the left side
00:15:04Hello
00:15:10Please let's stay together
00:15:12Don't get lost
00:15:14I have a blue cap
00:15:16I'm quite tall enough
00:15:18So
00:15:34Thank you
00:15:58You are the lady with the pharmacy
00:16:00I am
00:16:02Thank you
00:16:04Very good
00:16:06Here you go
00:16:08Okay
00:16:10No king and no queen
00:16:12Has stayed
00:16:14During the history of Hungarians
00:16:16Because this is a new building
00:16:18It was rebuilt
00:16:20Reconstructed after the second world war
00:16:22But now I lied to you
00:16:24Because there is one
00:16:26There was one famous person
00:16:28Who stayed here
00:16:30For one or two days
00:16:32Guess who could be
00:16:36No, it wasn't a person
00:16:38She was a woman
00:16:40When she visited Budapest
00:16:42She had to stay at Budapest
00:16:46In the back
00:16:48Behind the courtyard
00:16:50We have our national library
00:16:52The biggest library of Hungary
00:16:54So if you are writing a book
00:16:56A few copies have to be kept
00:16:58I have an article from a newspaper
00:17:00Most of it appears
00:17:02Every book, every newspaper has some copies here
00:17:04It's a five week library
00:17:06What does it mean?
00:17:08You can read here
00:17:10There are benches
00:17:12But you cannot read
00:17:14If you want to study
00:17:16You can
00:17:20Okay
00:17:28What is that?
00:17:40It's one of the oldest parts of the building
00:17:42And one of the oldest parts of the line
00:17:46Because this was used
00:17:48On the top
00:17:50It didn't have tiles
00:17:52There are more tiles
00:17:54About
00:17:56About
00:17:58He used to disguise himself
00:18:02To hide among the people
00:18:04To find out what's happening in the town
00:18:08And during one of his disguises
00:18:10He went hunting
00:18:12And he met that nice lady
00:18:14On the right
00:18:16And the lady fell in love
00:18:18With the king
00:18:20But the lady didn't know
00:18:22That the king
00:18:24So when she found out
00:18:26She died of sorrow
00:18:28That's a normal story
00:18:34And we have a fountain here
00:18:36So you can throw pines in the water
00:18:38And at night
00:18:42So the king was already spoken for?
00:18:46He was king Matthias
00:18:48And he already had a wife
00:18:52I'm not going to get it
00:19:22I'm going to get it

00:26:54of Terror is now transformed into a museum dedicated to this dark era of Hungarian history.
00:26:59You can experience the terrors ordinary citizens had to endure during these dark times. Just be
00:27:06sure to pick the English audio guide at the beginning, because the majority of exhibits
00:27:12are only presented in Hungarian, except for a long letter-sized description in English,
00:27:17which might take some time to get through. Don't miss the Berlin Wall Memorial in front of the
00:27:22House of Terror Museum. Budapest is also home to other impressive museums. Check out our travel
00:27:28guide for more suggestions. Number two. Central Market Hall. What better way to discover Hungarian
00:27:36culture than through food? Central Market Hall is a three-story food hall where you can experience
00:27:43all levels of Hungarian food production, from raw ingredients like the traditional paprika,
00:27:49to wine to prepare traditional dishes on the second floor, as well as traditional souvenirs
00:27:54and other interesting merchandise. Central Market Hall was built in 1897 by the first mayor of
00:28:01Budapest to create a marketplace where only quality food could be sold with a central location
00:28:06to serve the city. This impressive giant hall is located at the end of the famous shopping street
00:28:13and even if you're not hungry, a stroll along the kiosks is almost like you're traveling
00:28:19throughout different regions of Hungary. Number one. City Park. City Park is the main public park
00:28:27in Budapest and home to impressive attractions and activities. The park offers a great escape
00:28:33from busy streets. You could literally spend an entire day there. The entrance to the park
00:28:38opens with Heroes Square and the Millennium Monument featuring seven leaders of Hungarian
00:28:43tribes along with other prominent leaders and memorial stone of heroes. Walk along the impressive
00:28:49Gatehouse Tower and admire the Jaki Chapel and Vajdahunyad Castle, built in 1896 for the
00:28:56celebration of Thousand Years of Hungary. The park also features an impressive ice rink, a lake,
00:29:03zoo and a botanical garden and several other attractions. And of course, don't miss the
00:29:08Széchenyi Thermal Bath, which we already mentioned before. There are many other things to discover in Budapest.
00:29:33I think we can't go with him.
00:29:51Yes, we are here.
00:29:55Flat side. Flat, horizontal, Buda is hilly. And all together, they form Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
00:30:09Because in the old times, more than 1000 years ago, we had two cities here, Buda and Pest.
00:30:19And they were united in 1873. About 150 years ago. And Buda, the name has two strange origins.
00:30:33One is saying that Buda was the brother of Attila, the Hun. And that is true, because Buda was the brother of Attila.
00:30:45So maybe the name of the city comes from him. And the other story says that Buda is coming from the word Vada,
00:30:55which in Slavic languages means water, like aqua, aquincum, aqua in Latin, so you know.
00:31:05Because the city was very rich and it is still very rich in water. Why I am saying that this was the administrative center?
00:31:13Because right next to me, on my right side, this used to be the city hall.
00:31:21And if you walk that way a few steps, in the corner you will see a statue representing the goddess of wisdom, Attila from Greece.
00:31:31And she has a shield in her hand, and near the shield, I mean the shield is representing the coat of arms of Budapest.
00:31:43Okay, what can we see from here? Many things. First of all, in the middle of the square, we see a column.
00:31:53The Holy Trinity column. In Europe, in the middle age, 13th, 14th century, we had the plague. You know the plague, the epidemic.
00:32:05It was a very strong plague, very difficult plague, very lethal plague. About one-fourth, one-third of the population died.
00:32:13And because the population of that time, and even now, many people believe in God, so they erected in many places the Holy Trinity column.
00:32:23Since then, we didn't have any plague. We had communism and fascism, but we didn't have any plague.
00:32:31Okay, sometimes I try to joke, but nobody is laughing. I am laughing.
00:32:37Okay, behind the column, you see a very nice building with nice tithes on the top. The tithes are coming from Page.
00:32:45It's a southern city in the country, and there used to be a tithe sector, the Jornay sector.
00:32:51But these tithes can also be seen on the top of the church.
00:32:57That building behind me with the tithes behind the column used to be the Ministry of Finance during the Second World War.
00:33:07And then it became the House of the Hungarian Wines. I think the House of the Hungarians was better.
00:33:16And now it's going to be again the Ministry of Finance, which is not a good idea,
00:33:23because now the Hungarian government wants to move many ministries up here in the castle district, which is not good for tourism.
00:33:31Because many roads will be closed, because these government people will, you know.
00:33:37But they are still working on it.
00:33:40We have a white building in the back, just a simple building. It's the hotel Hilton.
00:33:48First Hilton in Budapest, the second Hilton is near the West End railway station.
00:33:56And when the chain of Hiltons wanted to enter Hungary, they wanted to buy the palace, the royal palace, to transform it into a hotel.
00:34:07And then the government was a little bit more clever, so they said no.
00:34:12And then they found here the ruins of a monastery. It's a Dominican monastery.
00:34:18And they built the hotel on over the ruins.
00:34:22So if you enter the hotel, somewhere to the right entrance, you can find the ruins inside.
00:34:31Okay, we have this nice building. It's the most beautiful to go down.
00:34:38Because usually when you enter a church, you are climbing some stairs, steps.
00:34:44But here, because of the gradual elevation of the streets, the church remained at the same level.
00:34:52And now you have to go down. Only a few steps.
00:34:58From many houses you can enter this narrow system.
00:35:02But now many houses, they are already cemented, closed.
00:35:07But some houses remain locked, so they have their own private cellar.
00:35:13We have a labyrinth here in this system. It can be visited.
00:35:17Many little turrets. But actually there are seven little turrets, representing the seven Hungarian tribes that entered Hungary in 896.
00:35:30So you will see these seven, even in the Hero Square, the seven equestrian statues of the Hungarian tribes.
00:35:41These turrets are embracing a statue representing our first king, St. Stephen.
00:35:48In many places, in many squares, in many villages, many towns, the main square somewhere, you will find a statue of St. Stephen, our first king.
00:35:58And this is the so-called famous Fisherman's Bastion. Why is it Fisherman's Bastion?
00:36:04Another two stories. The first story says that it was the guild of the fishermen here.
00:36:10And the second story says that it was the market of the fish. Fish market.
00:36:17Which is true, who cares?
00:36:19Good stories for the tourists. Are you a tourist? No, you are local now.
00:36:25And guess how old can the Fisherman's Bastion be?
00:36:30By the same architect who renovated the church. Ibor Miklos.
00:36:39You see a bird on the top of the tower of the church? It's a crow.
00:36:46Like Brendan Lee, the crow, you know.
00:36:50But it is not there because of Brendan Lee. It is there because of King Matthias.
00:36:55Because there was a story saying that the crow brought a letter from his mother to him.
00:37:05Or maybe his mother sent a ring because the crow has a ring in its beak.
00:37:11I don't know the story exactly, but anyway, it's related to King Matthias.
00:37:16Okay, now I will ask you to come with me. I want to show you...
00:37:55This is the final point of our walk. From here we are going back.
00:38:24Here I have to tell you a story.
00:38:30What he is speaking is not correct.
00:38:35It is said that 10% can be a loss.
00:38:39We've been pretty good. We only lost one.
00:38:41We are in the middle of Asia.
00:38:44And during the reign of King Bela IV, in 12-something,
00:38:52two monks went back to Asia to find Hungarians who remained in Asia.
00:39:01And they met those Hungarians.
00:39:04And they could speak Hungarian together with the people who still live in Asia.
00:39:09And these two monks were the guys who brought some news about the Mongolians
00:39:16who were going to attack Europe.
00:39:19And here we have the statue of these two monks, behind the wall, sorry.
00:39:24If you climb up these steps, you can see the statue of these two monks.
00:39:29And his name, one of the monks, is named Julianus.
00:39:35So we are very proud of him, because he went back to Asia to find the Hungarians.
00:39:41And here are the guys who worked for the new monk.
00:39:48You can see the television.
00:40:48Yeah, that's so cool.
00:41:04Wow.
00:41:34Wow.
00:42:04How do you feel?
00:42:06Do you like the local climate?
00:42:08Yeah, yeah.
00:42:10It's OK? Not too hot?
00:42:12It's hot, but there's a breeze.
00:42:14A breeze.
00:42:16We are not interested in him.
00:42:18We are interested in the horse.
00:42:20Mostly the testicles of the horse.
00:42:23Oh, OK.
00:42:25We are not interested in him.
00:42:27We are interested in the horse.
00:42:29Ah.
00:42:31Mostly the testicles of the horse.
00:42:35Yes, the testicles.
00:42:38The legend says that if the students in the evening come out and stroke the testicles of the horse,
00:42:46the next day they will pass the exam.
00:42:54You cannot go to hospitals.
00:42:56On the 1st of August,
00:42:59pretty much every day.
00:43:03We are going to school and nobody wants to make friends with you.
00:43:19Maybe it's just enough to tell you that.
00:43:22Yeah.
00:43:23Look at this.
00:43:28Look at this.
00:43:44Let's show the way for the Hungarians toward the Carpathian beach.
00:43:49To arrive here.
00:43:51We have many Turols, many birds of this kind in Hungary.
00:43:56And now you are coming from Vienna.
00:43:59And about 60 kilometers from Budapest, on the left, maybe you saw a big statue on the hill.
00:44:07That is the biggest Turol of Hungary.
00:44:10Usually every Turol has a sword with beads.
00:44:16And that sword, when you are coming from Vienna, is very long.
00:44:2240 meters long.
00:44:24One sword.
00:44:25You can't imagine how big the statue is.
00:44:29Okay.
00:44:30This bridge was the first bridge over the Danube.
00:44:33Inaugurated in 1849.
00:44:46He was in a rich town.
00:44:49He wanted to visit his father.
00:44:52But unfortunately his father was living on the other side of the Danube.
00:44:56And unfortunately it was winter and the water was icy.
00:45:00So he couldn't cross.
00:45:02And then he decided to construct the first bridge.
00:45:08So he brought two engineers from abroad, from Great Britain.
00:45:12And one of the engineers was designing the bridge and the other one was carrying out the work.
00:45:20And also one of the engineers constructed a tunnel as well.
00:45:25Because when you go down and you go left, there is a tunnel under us.
00:45:32And we Hungarians are very dirty people.
00:45:35And we say that when it is raining, the rain is poured into the tunnel.
00:45:39Now it is not raining, so the bridge is open.
00:45:42Okay.
00:45:44In the back you see a huge building.
00:45:47That's the cathedral.
00:45:49The cathedral of St. Stephen.
00:45:51It's the biggest church in Europe.
00:45:54But not the biggest church in Hungary.
00:45:57The biggest church in Hungary is about 45 kilometers.
00:46:02Aspergum.
00:46:04And those buildings have a height of 96 meters.
00:46:08Why 96?
00:46:10Because the Hungarians came here in 800 AD.
00:46:13So nothing can be higher than 96 meters.
00:46:23If you enter the church, there is a chapel where you can see the holy right hand of St. Stephen.
00:46:30Preserved in a nice little box.
00:46:38Church of St. Stephen
00:47:08Church of St. Stephen
00:47:39Church of St. Stephen
00:47:52He was very welcome.
00:47:54And he became one of the leaders of the Ossetian army.
00:47:59Of the mixed Ossetian army.
00:48:01Who was fighting against the Turks in 1686.
00:48:05Because the Turks became very cheeky and they wanted to attack Vienna.
00:48:11And then Vienna had to do something.
00:48:13So they organized an army.
00:48:15It was led by this nice guy.
00:48:17He was a hunchback guy, you know, like this.
00:48:20So we are very proud of him because he was the guy who liberated Buda
00:48:25from under the Turkish occupation.
00:48:27So many churches were transformed into mosques.
00:48:32And the Turks built us a lot of Turkish spas.
00:48:37We have a Turkish spa here in Budapest.
00:48:39You can visit it, it is open.
00:48:41And we have a beautiful view.
00:49:02Church of St. Stephen
00:49:05Church of St. Stephen
00:49:26You look at the beautiful, nice, colorful church.
00:49:32It is a Catholic church.
00:49:34It can be used by the public.
00:49:37This means that you can get married in that church.
00:49:40You can go to the organ concert.
00:49:44And King Matthias got married here.
00:49:49Or a lady.
00:49:51But nobody calls like that.
00:49:53Matthias Church.
00:49:56It was converted, transformed into a mosque.
00:50:01All the decoration was whitewashed.
00:50:06You know whitewash, painting white.
00:50:10And when the Russians were here,
00:50:13at the end of the Second World War,
00:50:16they used it for storing horses.
00:50:22Yeah, yeah, that's true.
00:50:25Like a stable.
00:50:30Okay, so we were up in the castle district.
00:50:33You saw the parliament.
00:50:35And I told you that I will tell a few words about the parliament.
00:50:40The parliament was actually finished in 1905.
00:50:45And when the so-called compromise took place between Austria and Hungary,
00:50:50they decided to build a separate parliament for the Hungarians.
00:50:55And then they called for a tender.
00:50:58And this tender was won by Mr. Imre Steindl.
00:51:03He has a German name, I'm not sure, but he was a Hungarian guy.
00:51:09And what you see was the first prize.
00:51:13But behind the parliament there are another two buildings.
00:51:17One is the Museum of Photography,
00:51:20which used to be the High Court building.
00:51:23And then it was transformed into the Museum of Photography.
00:51:26And now it will become the High Court again.
00:51:29That was the second prize.
00:51:31And also in the same square you can find the third prize,
00:51:36which is the Ministry of Agriculture.
00:51:39So three parliaments in the same square, I think it is quite much.
00:51:46Okay, so the parliament, the buildings of the parliament,
00:51:50is the largest building in the whole country.
00:51:55It is two Germans when they left the capital.
00:52:00And it was reconstructed only in 1964, so after 20 years.
00:52:07And this church on the left was the burial place of Bishop Gellir,
00:52:14who was put in the barrel and thrown into the Danube.
00:52:19On the left and on the right,
00:52:24on the left and on the right,
00:52:28there is the famous pedestrian street, the Paz Iudza.
00:52:32It is famous, but actually I don't like it much.
00:52:35A lot of tourists.
00:52:37And actually you cannot walk nicely because it is very crowded.
00:52:42And because it is a very narrow street, the view is not very good either.
00:52:49It is not possible.
00:52:56Now it is under reconstruction, so usually it is not possible to go up.
00:53:01Under the scaffolding there is a huge statue representing the Statue of Liberty.
00:53:08And actually it is representing the liberation of Budapest under the fascist power.
00:53:16So Budapest was liberated by the Russians after the Second World War.
00:53:24So the capital was liberated several times.
00:53:27Sometimes by the Turkish occupation, sometimes by the Russians,
00:53:31by the German occupation.
00:53:34But the hill is quite nice.
00:53:37It is worth walking there.
00:53:39It is good for the first kisses, for the first dates with your girlfriends and boyfriends.
00:53:44And on the other side of the river you see a building, a white and yellow building.
00:53:50And in the left corner you see a sort of dome.
00:53:54That is a jacuzzi.
00:53:56Can you see the jacuzzi?
00:53:59So this is another German spot.
00:54:02It is very crowded.
00:54:04I tried to visit it at 6 in the morning, but it was already crowded.
00:54:10But in winter it is nice.
00:54:13It is still dark and you are sitting in the jacuzzi.
00:54:20In 2004 Hungary joined the EU, the European Union.
00:54:25And then this bridge, the white bridge and the green bridge in front of us
00:54:31was taken out from traffic.
00:54:34And along the white bridge there was a huge pipe laid down along the bridge.
00:54:40And from this pipe water was flowing into the river.
00:54:44Like a cascade.
00:54:47And just to imagine how rich the country is, this water was coming from the system,
00:54:54from the utility system, not from the river.
00:54:59And regarding the other bridge, the green bridge, the liberty bridge,
00:55:03it was named after Francis Joseph, the emperor of Austria.
00:55:07But now it is the liberty bridge.
00:55:10It has four turrets on the top of the pillars,
00:55:14the legendary birds that showed the way for the Hungarians.
00:55:19And it is a good place for the suiciders.
00:55:23Many people, not many, but sometimes it happens that they are climbing up the bridge
00:55:29and they try to jump from there.
00:55:31It happens about every 3-4 months or once a year.
00:55:42But it is a very nice bridge, liberty bridge.
00:55:46It has a tram line.
00:55:48And in front of us we have a building that is the University of Economics.
00:55:54And this was the only building where you could find a statue of somebody from the socialist era.
00:56:04And it was Karl Marx, of course, who wrote the Capital.
00:56:09But now his statue has gone.
00:56:12And all the socialist and communist statues are now in the statue park outside Vilafant.
00:56:23But on the left, near the university building, you see a nice light building.
00:56:30That is the main covered market of Vilafant.
00:56:34Even Princess Diana visited this market.
00:56:39And she bought some garlic and some paprika, maybe, for her husband.
00:56:49Mostly the garlic.
00:56:51But it is a nice building inside.
00:56:53If you have time, you can visit it.
00:56:56It is open until 6.
00:56:59It is not far from your hotel.
00:57:01Actually, it is about 25 minutes away.
00:57:07So, this is sort of a traffic jam.
00:57:10This means I have to talk to you more.
00:57:21Okay, you remember the statue of Eugene de Savoy, the hunchback.
00:57:27And next to his statue, there was an entrance to the main building, to the palace.
00:57:34And that is hosting the National Gallery.
00:57:38The most beautiful Hungarian paintings are there in the National Gallery.
00:57:46Except for the most expensive Hungarian paintings that are already either in the United States or in Canada.
00:57:53Or somewhere stolen by somebody.
00:58:01But anyway, we still have some beautiful paintings in the National Gallery.
00:58:12But I can imagine.
00:58:15I saw the traffic in the U.S. street.
00:58:18There is no crossing point.
00:58:20You just have to stop.
00:58:24I have to go to the pharmacy again.
00:58:31Yeah, water sometimes is very useful.
00:58:33Little boats were bringing their cargo.
00:58:38The goods were carried in the tunnel.
00:58:41But now, it is done in 1896.
00:58:45Do you remember this year?
00:58:47After 1000 years of the first foundings.
00:58:51So, when the Hungarians came here.
00:58:54And this, you can visit it.
00:58:57It is about 26.
00:59:00And there you will find nice paintings from the Flemish.
