00:05:16It is lacquered? Without glasses? I don't know. It looks happy.
00:05:42Okay, let's go.
00:05:52Okay.
00:06:12Hello, friends. Yeah, welcome to the Humanology episode.

00:07:59Okay. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Okay. Okay. So, yeah.
00:08:24Yeah. Cheers. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
00:08:46Yeah. I'm sure you had a wonderful day, okay? Yeah. Now, let's take five minutes break. I need some vocal rest, okay? Thank you.
00:08:54Future leaders, very proud. Not much else, okay? Yeah. Very important. Yeah. Education, career development. Thank you. Five minutes break. Thank you.
00:09:04Thank you. Yeah. Very cool. Mm-hmm.
00:11:28Welcome back. We are back.
00:11:30Yeah. Good evening.
00:11:32Happy Thursday. Yeah. Welcome, friends. Thank you for joining us. Yeah.
00:11:42Mm-hmm.
00:11:44So, how about some story time, right? Yeah. Cheers.
00:11:50Mm-hmm.
00:11:53Mm-hmm.
00:11:57Uh, when I was in high school, South South Korea, I was like 11th grade.
00:12:07Yeah. Like 17 years old and a high school student.
00:12:16Yeah.
00:12:19I was like top student, yeah?
00:12:26South Korea, high school.
00:12:28That was like 1995, okay? Yeah.
00:12:3611th grade, okay? So, I was like 17, something like that, yeah.
00:12:4311th grade, okay? High school.
00:12:45I was top student, right? Like sometimes number 1, number 2, number 3.
00:12:53Like that, right? How many students were there?
00:12:57Yeah, like over 600 students, okay? All boys school.
00:13:03And it's so South Korea, okay? Yeah.
00:13:08Yeah.
00:13:13Yeah, so...
00:13:22And...
00:13:27That was just some angles, yeah.
00:13:31Yeah.
00:13:34And...
00:13:36I became like top 1, number 1 in the school exam once.
00:13:43Before that, yeah, number 2, number 3, right?
00:13:49But I really wanted to be number 1 in the school exam, okay?
00:13:53And finally I got it, okay? Because I studied very hard, okay?
00:14:00Cheers.
00:14:06But after I got this number 1 spot in high school exam, so South Korea, 1995.
00:14:1511th grade, okay?
00:14:19I did not want to be awarded in public in front of my colleagues.
00:14:26Why?
00:14:29Because, I mean, number 2 spot, number 3 spot.
00:14:33Yeah.
00:14:34I was awarded in public in front of my colleagues.
00:14:39But to be awarded as number 1 spot, I was like, I did not want to be publicly awarded.
00:14:50Okay.
00:14:52Welcome.
00:14:55Why?
00:14:56Why?
00:14:58It's because I did not like the concept of like me being better than anybody else.
00:15:10Kind of arrogance. I did not want that, okay? Elitism.
00:15:16Okay?
00:15:27Because it made, I thought it may create the wall, invisible wall, metaphysical wall between me and other students.
00:15:37Oh, Hwang Kyu Lee, you are number 1, everybody else inferior to you, Hwang Kyu Lee.
00:15:48Oh, I do not want that.
00:15:52Yeah.
00:15:54So, I knocked on the door to school principal, Seoul South Korea High School, okay?
00:16:02Yeah, welcome friends.
00:16:05Welcome.
00:16:08And I asked my high school principal, Seoul South Korea, 1995.
00:16:15Uh, hey, Mr. Principal, he was in his 50s or 60s, okay?
00:16:24Around my parents' age, okay?
00:16:27Very good gentleman, okay?
00:16:29Yeah, Mr. School Principal, yeah, this last big school exam, I got the number 1 spot, okay?
00:16:40But, would you please excuse me from this public award ceremony, please?
00:16:52Because, yeah, my high school exam score, the ranking, me being number 1, is my travesty.
00:17:04I do not want my private school exam result record to be publicized.
00:17:17I want to keep it to myself, private, that I got number 1 spot.
00:17:26It's my privacy.
00:17:28It's my privacy.
00:17:32So, would you excuse me from this, like, award ceremony, please?
00:17:43And he said no, because he's old school, right?
00:17:47Uh, uh, the, my high school principal said no.
00:17:54Yeah, you have to go to the ceremony, because, yeah, you're number 1, but there's number 2, number 3 guys, too.
00:18:03So, in this public ceremony, yeah, there's number 2 guy, number 3 guy, but where's number 1 guy?
00:18:12Oh, we cannot do that.
00:18:15He's old school, okay?
00:18:17He was in his 50s, 60s, okay?
00:18:20Yeah, just like my parents back then.
00:18:22So, yeah, you have to attend this ceremony. I'm sorry.
00:18:25Now, go back to your class.
00:18:29I'm paraphrasing, okay?
00:18:30I'm paraphrasing, okay?
00:18:39Yeah, so, okay, uh, I talk to many, uh, teachers.
00:18:46It was by rebellion against Korean academic elitism.
00:18:59I talk to my teachers, I talk to my parents about it, and, uh, they all said, yeah, you have to accept this award in public.
00:19:16You have to be a role model to other students.
00:19:19Uh, but I, no, no.
00:19:46Do you know what I did after that?
00:19:59Uh, nothing bad, nothing too bad, okay?
00:20:02No, no.
00:20:04Nothing too bad.
00:20:06I ran away from my parents, from my high school.
00:20:16I ran away.
00:20:18To where?
00:20:22From South Korea?
00:20:24Where did I go to run away from South Korean academic elitism?
00:20:361995.
00:20:40I was 17 years old.
00:20:44I ran away to America.
00:20:57Los Angeles, California.
00:21:00That was the very first time I came back to America, okay?
00:21:05Because I was born in America, Itaewon, New York, 1978, okay, so.
00:21:11Yeah, I ran away.
00:21:17Story time, okay?
00:21:19Yeah, I'll tell you more stories about that, yeah.
00:21:23More stories about that, yeah.
00:21:25But it's been told in, like, YouTube, Human Rights Series, Dailymotion, Human Rights Series, also in Amazon.com.
00:21:35Amazon Kindle, okay?
00:21:38Yeah, like, Alaska, Romance, Stranger, and da-da-da, right?
00:21:48I used my pen name back then, okay, so that was like,
00:21:552018, like,
00:21:58Yeah, like, six, five years ago, okay, so.
00:22:01But they were published, but in Amazon Kindle, I used my pen name back then, okay?
00:22:07Henry Leroy, okay?
00:22:10But they were published, okay?
00:22:13Biographical, autobiography.
00:22:15Autobiography, okay?
00:22:17Let's say five minutes break, okay?
00:22:19Yeah, and I'll tell you more stories, okay?
00:22:34Okay, thank you.
00:22:36Mighty proud of you.
00:22:37You're amazing.
00:22:39Yeah, geniuses.
00:22:40Yeah, multi-talented.
00:22:42Five minutes break, please.
00:22:45Yes, thank you.
00:22:47Yeah.
00:23:15you
00:23:45you
00:24:15you
00:24:45you
00:25:15you
00:25:45you
00:26:15you
00:26:18okay
00:26:22yeah
00:26:25so i mean it was my god feeling back then okay uh yeah well back then i was like 17 years old
00:26:37uh yeah yeah good night yeah have a good night's sleep thank you yeah so yeah it's recorded in
00:26:47instagram live and also daily motion as well okay so like um back then i was 17 years
00:26:55young so i was not articulate about it i just had this god feeling okay but now now that i'm 46
00:27:02yeah i can more articulate the thought process in this teenager's mind okay so it's quite
00:27:12difficult concept because i'm a smart man i'm a smart person okay so even when i was 17 years
00:27:18yeah cheers
00:27:22so what i objected was yeah 1995 south korea heavy emphasis in english and mathematics
00:27:37okay yeah science in general okay uh i excelled i was number one in that one exam
00:27:46just one exam okay high school uh but my fellow students they are better than me in martial arts
00:27:56soccer baseball basketball so i object to this notion where yeah in the written exam
00:28:06english mathematics physics biology economics yeah i i was number one yes but
00:28:15i do not want to be regarded as a number one student
00:28:19because so my colleagues they're better than me in baseball basketball
00:28:29soccer
00:28:32martial arts they're better than me on the different departments so it's wrong for me
00:28:39to be regarded as number one student
00:28:45i disagree with that
00:28:51but back then there was a priority english and mathematics okay
00:28:58yeah i did benefit from that emphasis the priority because i'm in america
00:29:04yeah i write novels in english and i do mathematics right yeah let me show you
00:29:12yeah an hour ago okay yeah i enjoy doing this stuff okay
00:29:22so i did benefit from uh korean k-12 system emphasizing mathematics and english okay oh
00:29:29i'm great beneficiary of that prioritization but uh i did not want to be regarded as
00:29:40the best student in that high school my alma mater high school and okay
00:29:49so also i did not want to be part of this elitist academic system i had to run away from it
00:30:03it's too restricting too standardized suppressing creativity originality i did not want to be part
00:30:14of the academic elitism system i had to run away from it okay
00:30:27it's a difficult concept welcome to humanology okay
00:30:31yeah we are the best school
00:30:39yeah cheers
00:30:49yeah
00:30:54very turbulent stormy
00:30:56teenage or high school days that i've experienced yeah
00:31:18you're difficult yeah
00:31:25yeah
00:31:44yeah as a teenager 1995 when i was 17 i had many questions about
00:31:53more than philosophical questions okay about the world universe
00:32:00and philosophical questions right here yeah and
00:32:10i would visit my uncles and
00:32:13teachers
00:32:17principal high school principal or high school vice principal another great gentleman okay
00:32:24very wise gentleman in his 50s or 60s okay and my teachers uncles and my parents
00:32:33my parents
00:32:36i need some input their advices and they gave me their wisdom their experience their knowledge
00:32:47i was 17 okay i need some input knowledge wisdom from people who are older than me
00:32:54okay
00:32:58and they congregate
00:33:01now let's take five minutes break i have some vocal rest okay story time now how nice huh yeah

00:35:54you
00:36:24you
00:36:54you
00:37:11okay welcome back we're back friends and uh
00:37:15yeah check on my zipper okay so good i have to take a look okay
00:37:20so anyway yeah back in south south korea okay so uh i need some advices okay because
00:37:29yeah i was quite confused teenager 17 years young 1995 south south korea okay
00:37:36and also maybe i need some vacation take a take a break from all this studying
00:37:43yeah to get the number one spot i would like stay all night studying for this school exam okay
00:37:50all different subject matters maybe 10 subject matters physics english economics

01:05:11yeah koreans they do that stuff
01:05:17so my american colleagues who do not know korean language okay they asked me
