00:00A beloved child's video game being massacred by Hollywood is nothing new. Remember Ugly Sonic?
00:05Still, this one seems extra personal. Bringing beloved video game franchises to the screen is
00:10a difficult task for filmmakers. It's about finding a balance between honoring the source
00:14material while appealing to the tastes of moviegoers who might be unfamiliar with the games.
00:18That isn't always possible, and all of the poorly ranked video game movies on Rotten Tomatoes
00:22prove that they have a tendency to upset fans and critics alike. Unfortunately,
00:262025's Minecraft adaptation looks destined to join the list of blunders — that is,
00:30if the early reactions are anything to go by. Starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Jennifer
00:35Coolidge, Matt Berry, and Steve Carell, a Minecraft movie boasts an all-star cast of
00:39beloved Hollywood superstars. However, the general consensus from fans after seeing the
00:44trailer is that the movie looks terrible. One user on X summed up the opinion of many gaming fans,
00:48writing,
00:49"'Anyone could have guessed this, but this is clearly a movie worked on by people whose kids
00:52play Minecraft, and not by anybody who actually plays Minecraft.'"
00:57"'This guy is such a toolbag.'"
00:59In the filmmakers' defense, the trailer only offers a quick glimpse into what the movie entails,
01:03so the finished product might honor the spirit of the games.
01:06That said, there are several reasons why Minecraft fans can't get behind this project
01:10after seeing the trailer. A Minecraft movie is the latest video game adaptation to mix
01:14live-action elements with CGI. As such, the first trailer has drawn instant comparisons
01:18to a critically panned Adam Sandler movie from 2015. You know the one. One ex-user wrote,
01:24"'It gives me a scent of pixels. Am I the only one seeing this?'
01:28The ex-user wasn't the only person to highlight the visual similarities between both films,
01:32but some fans argue that the Minecraft adaptation looks worse than the Sandler vehicle.
01:36Pixels isn't the only flick the Minecraft movie is drawing comparisons to.
01:40The film follows a group of humans who are transported into a fantastical realm through
01:44a portal, forcing them to stave off dangerous threats — zombies, pig armies, etc. — before
01:48they can return home. Some fans noted that the plot is reminiscent of another movie starring
01:53Jack Black. One ex-user joked, quote, "'Oh God, they're Jumanji-ing it.'"
01:57It's one thing to criticize a film for being derivative of other projects,
02:00but the trailer for a Minecraft movie has also attracted some angry responses.
02:05Some people believe that it teases a blasphemous adaptation with no redeemable qualities.
02:09Some of the more passionate Minecraft fans haven't taken kindly to the first trailer,
02:13with many claiming that it's an insult to the games. As one angry ex eloquently stated,
02:17"'I love Minecraft with my whole heart. That game basically raised me,
02:20but this looks like such an abomination. Also, f—k Jack Black.'"
02:25"'I am Steve.'"
02:28Meanwhile, some fans think that Jared Hess' upcoming adaptation was made with no consideration
02:33of the countless kids out there who were raised on the games. One ex-user wrote, quote,
02:37"'What the f—k is that Minecraft new trailer?' followed by some crying emojis. They added,
02:42"'What the hell did they do to my precious childhood that had raised me for almost my life?
02:46Nah, I didn't become obsessed for this abomination.'"
02:49Elsewhere, people took issue with the trailer's visual qualities,
02:52suggesting that the filmmakers took shortcuts, with one ex-user suggesting that they ran the
02:56graphics through an AI filter. In short, the negative responses appear to outweigh the positive
03:00ones, and a Minecraft movie might go down in history as yet another video game movie box office
03:05bomb. Here's hoping that the actual movie is better than the trailer.
