00:00From way up in the skies, the slow and steady loss of trees and vegetation on the hilltops and slopes
00:05had become increasingly clear to the president as he pondered government's renewed and stepped-up
00:11efforts in mitigating the deadly effects of flooding in the wake of Tropical Storm Enteng.
00:17Our Kenneth Paciente has more on the president's frustration and vows to
00:21strictly reinforce government's law against deforestation in this report.
00:27Following the aerial inspection of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in areas most affected by Typhoon Enteng,
00:36particularly in Marikina and the province of Rizal, the president could not hide his dismay
00:41at the sight of balding hillsides and vanishing forests which have caused landslides and widespread flooding.
00:56Thus, the president vows the government will be even more stricter against deforestation,
01:06especially since he emphasized this is no longer about illegal activities,
01:10this is now a matter of public safety.
01:13It's life and death already, a lot of people are dying because of what they are doing.
01:18So we have to be more, the laws are all there, it's the implementation and the enforcement.
01:24The president also stressed that water impounding dams and river basins are seen as government's
01:29solution to prevent widespread flooding, especially in Metro Manila.
01:33This is already part of the government's flood control projects.
01:43We have impounding dams upriver in river systems that will serve many purposes,
01:51that will pay for flood control because the water that should go down to the city is not going down.
01:59Along with the distribution of relief goods to Bicolanos severely affected by Typhoon Enteng,
02:04DILG Secretary Ben Herr Abalos reminded the Bicolanos to prepare for the adverse impact
02:09of more calamities in light of the threat of the La Niña phenomenon.
02:13Abalos also urged the Bicolanos to always follow the directives of authorities,
02:17especially evacuation orders, to ensure their safety.
