00:00As parents begin to send their children back to school and grapple with the relative costs,
00:07the impact of supplies on a family budget varies significantly across Europe.
00:13Italy and Spain are, for example, the countries that tend to pay the most
00:18among Europe's five largest economies,
00:21despite having lower average salaries than France, Germany and the UK.
00:27The cost of putting together a basic kit comprising 20 items,
00:32like pens, highlighters, notebooks and scissors,
00:36seems to be highest in Italy.
00:38Families there need to save almost 11% of their monthly income
00:44just to buy the bare minimum.
00:47In Spain it's 9.24%, followed by Germany at 7.1%,
00:54the UK at 5.65% and France at just 4.84%.
01:02Spain's hefty cost is partially justified by inflation,
01:07the fourth highest rate in the EU in June,
01:10but the same cannot be said for Italy,
01:14which had the second lowest inflation rate in the bloc, just 0.9%.
01:22These figures, however, don't include other expenses,
01:26such as textbooks, meals, school trips or sport equipment.
01:31Textbooks in particular bring another heavy financial burden.
01:36On average they cost 591.44 euros in Italy and 491.90 euros in Spain,
01:46where they reached the highest price ever.
01:49The situation is also becoming worrying in Germany,
01:52where the price of school items rose between 5 and 13% from 2022 to 2023.
02:01In the UK a basic school kit seems generally more affordable.
02:06However, unlike in other countries, uniforms are mandatory in British schools.
02:12Parents can spend an average of up to 422 pounds or 500 euros on uniforms.
02:20France seems to offer the best deal among Europe's big five,
02:24with essential school items accounting for less than 5% of an average monthly salary.
