00:00This is Iron Cub, the robot, and the Italian Institute of Technology has strapped a jet
00:08pack to him.
00:09And now it's learning to fly.
00:11But why?
00:12Here's Daniele Pucci, one of the researchers working on the project to explain.
00:15Yeah, the ultimate goal is basically to have a disaster response technology that can help
00:21operators to act remotely, where basically it's difficult to walk and to arrive to get
00:28to the place.
00:29So you would like something that flies, avoids debris and obstacles, lands, makes inspections,
00:37looks for survivors.
00:38The jet pack was developed and produced by Gravity Industries.
00:41However, the institute says they have had to rework the whole thing to work with their
00:45robot, in particular, working around the 1400 degree exhaust coming out the back.
00:49They are now working on altering the robot to work better specifically with the jet pack.
00:54We have a two-step strategy.
00:57So one short term is really to have a stable hovering and the landing of the robot.
01:05And then the second step, it would be to consider aerodynamics, but this would take longer and
01:10most likely to get horizontal flight.
01:12This is all in the hopes that one day if you're in trouble, in a difficult to reach spot,
01:16this might be your first responder.
