00:00There has been lots of talk about the July 13th, 2024 attempt on Donald Trump's life.
00:06But one element that hasn't gotten as much attention is how it affected his family. The
00:10former president finally revealed what his youngest son did when he got word.
00:15When a gunman opened fire at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, several attendees
00:20were injured and one died. The former president was lucky to have only sustained a minor injury
00:25to his right ear, which was struck by a bullet.
00:27The former president's condition wasn't immediately clear at the time. His youngest son, Barron
00:32Trump, was not at the rally. He heard about what happened when someone interrupted his
00:36tennis lesson to tell him about the shooting.
00:38Donald related the story during an August 31st appearance on the Fox News show Life,
00:42Liberty, and Levin, telling host Mark Levin that Barron went to get more information from
00:47a trusted source, his mom, Melania Trump.
00:50He loves his father. He's a good kid, good student, good athlete, actually. And he ran,
00:57Mom, what's going on? What's going on?
00:59Barron and Melania have a super tight relationship, and Melania has hinted she intends to be near
01:04her only son as he starts college in New York. She even taught Barron to speak Slovenian,
01:09her native language. A shared language is an added source of closeness for mother and
01:13son. They've reportedly used it for secret conversations around Donald, Melania biographer
01:18Mary Jordan told CBS News. Trump has expressed annoyance at not knowing what they are saying,
01:23as he has not tried to learn the language.
01:25Donald has also said Melania tuned in to live coverage of the July 13th rally, so she saw
01:30her husband react as the shots were fired. In late July, he told Fox News' Laura Ingram
01:36that the former first lady first thought the worst had happened.
01:39She can't really even talk about it.
01:42Traumatized.
01:43Which is okay, because that means she likes me, or she loves me.
01:46When Trump came back up from underneath his podium, his ear and face were streaked with
01:49blood. He raised his fists to the audience and chanted the word, fight.
01:53The day after the assassination attempt, Melania issued a lengthy statement on X, formerly
01:58Twitter. She wrote,
01:59"...I realized my life and Barron's life were on the brink of devastating change."
02:03Trump's other sons have been outspoken about how his fist-raising gesture resonated with
02:07them. Donald Trump Jr. was with his own children when he heard the news. In an interview with
02:12CNN at the Republican National Convention, Donald Jr. said that he had to wait an hour
02:16and a half before he could talk to his father because the hospital was locked down.
02:21"...and when he stood up after being shot at and just showed resolve to keep fighting
02:26for this country, that was everything for me."
02:28Donald's son Eric Trump likewise praised his dad's fighting spirit, saying he was really
02:33proud of his father.
