The French government wants a new migration treaty with the UK, to help end the migrant crisis that has seen thousands of people to take to flimsy boats in the English channel in a bid to enter Europe.

00:00Well, the French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin wants to see a new treaty signed
00:05between the United Kingdom and France to deal with the issue of irregular migration in and
00:10around the coasts of the north of the country. And this comes after the deadliest sinking
00:15so far this year. Boats carrying asylum seekers went down in the waters off northern France
00:21on the 3rd of September and 12 people lost their lives. There is already a deal in place.
00:26It was signed in 2023 between the former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the
00:31French President Emmanuel Macron. More than $500 million being paid by London to Paris
00:37to support the deployment of extra police officers patrolling the beaches of northern
00:42France to try to intercept migrants and detain people smugglers. But there are calls now
00:47from the French government for a new treaty.
