00:00I
00:03Mean I came out really
00:06It's feeling good ready to play. I think in a lot of my previous quarterfinals. I've come out like a little bit
00:14Like nervous, but today I just felt really like good from the start ready to go I think
00:21Maybe got more nervous as the match went on because I felt like
00:25He was playing
00:27points a little bit tight it almost caused me to play a little bit tight too, but uh I
00:32mean I came up with a lot of servers when I when I needed them and
00:36You know played some some big points well, and you know super pumped to make it into my first semi
00:41Thank you name an affiliation one question each
00:45Please so I can get to as many people as I can in the room Howard start us off
00:55Why you came out with that different feeling you just described what made today any different from the past
01:02quarterfinals and
01:04at the end
01:05You seemed rather emotional
01:08Understandably, what will be the key to if you need to bring down the emotion a little and get ready to play another match?
01:16I
01:17mean the emotional levels
01:19down you know I
01:22It's cool
01:23I'm in the 70s, but I very much have the mindset of you know the jobs
01:28The jobs not done, and I keep taking I keep taking it one match at a time like I've been all tournament and focus on
01:34The next match ahead of me, and I'd say I think the way I came out
01:40Today was different because I just been in this situation enough times
01:45And I think a question I got asked pretty much every time I lost in my quarterfinals was what's it gonna take to
01:52go further and
01:54the answer I gave was always just keep putting myself in these situations and
01:59I'll become more comfortable in these situations and get better and you know
02:04That's that's definitely what happened now. You know the quarterfinals didn't feel like I
02:10Don't know this big thing to me like it like it has been I guess in the past
02:14It just felt like another another tournament
02:18Matt
02:21Thank you
02:22Do you remember what was going through your head it like what was it five three in the tiebreaker?
02:28three I mean they'll just the last couple points and sort of like when you're getting so close to that finish line and
02:35What you're thinking when you just have to play a few more
02:39I mean I was just in this in this specific moment. I was just trying to tell myself not to give him anything anything for free
02:48because
02:50Neither one of us, I guess we're like having a lot of success attacking it was obviously very like just tight tennis
02:57so I just wanted to
02:59focus on serving well putting a lot of balls in the court, and and you know
03:03Not I guess not bail out and like look for a free point almost kind of kind of what I did at
03:09I
03:10Think five two on my serve. I think I just looked to like pull a forehand on the first ball, which was
03:16Fine, but when you're a little like nervy, I guess it's it's not as easy to
03:21to make those shots that might I guess
03:25Be a lot easier when you're when you're feeling good, so you know I just wanted to
03:30I was just telling myself to be super
03:35Just consistent and you know
03:38Disciplined on on the points
03:43You've obviously played
03:45Alex million times in your career. It must be difficult to come up with kind of new tactics and everything
03:50But what was the approach you wanted to take into today? I think I mean not too much changes because at the end of the day like
03:59The the points from the ground are only a little part of the match when
04:05It's serving is such a big thing between both of us
04:08You know most the time he's me getting a lot of free points on his serve
04:10And I'm gonna be a lot of free points on my serve
04:14One adjustment I had to make mid-match was he started returning
04:17My slice serves a lot better, so then I started having to mix up my service
04:22He was able to break me in the second set because he got on to that
04:26That serve and hit some good returns so that I had to mix up the serve a bit more than I was before
04:31And then maybe I have in the past, but I think one thing that both of us do to each other
04:37Quite well as both of us always expect the other person when they get around with the forehand
04:43to like attack to the other person's forehand like pull one inside in or pull across and
04:48both of us have a lot of success when we
04:50Attack with the foreign inside outer line, and I think that's something that I went to a lot early because he is always expecting me to
04:58Be aggressive to his forehand, but
05:03Yeah, I was able to get him a lot of times with foreign inside outs and foreign lines
05:07And then he he did the same to me on some big points in the middle
05:13I know you said well Mike was just in here saying that he didn't really talk to you about
05:17Kind of getting to a number of quarterfinals and not making that step because he didn't want to be
05:20Negative and I just wondered you said it was a big thing for you in the past
05:24Did you do anything in particular to kind of address that or how did that affect you you know on a day-to-day basis going
05:31It's games like I said
05:32It's just like being in the quarterfinals several times being in the situation over and over again. It's
05:39It makes it not I guess such a big deal, you know when you
05:44you know some of these I guess you know top players someone like
05:48Novak the quarterfinals is the same as
05:50Holds the same weight as like the second round the third round whatever. It's just it's just common. It's you're used to it
05:56So I mean just being in
06:00Quarterfinals, it's made the whole I guess like
06:04Moment of wow, I'm deep in a slam become a lot more. I guess dull of a feeling so I can just treat it like
06:10You know treat it much more like any other match Richard
06:15Congrats Taylor. I'm just wondering you've been the lead guy in this group of Americans
06:19For a long time now, and you watched
06:22Francis and Tommy get to semis, and I'm just wondering
06:26Was that not easy and where did your belief?
06:30Where was your belief during that whole stretch? I was I was always happy for them. I think
06:35I honestly like pumped for them. I think
06:39The the mental coping that I was doing for it was well every time I was in the quarters. I played Jokovic
06:49And I think I think that's what that was my like
06:53Way to just like
06:55protect my ego
06:56but
06:57then
06:58Then I got a look at at Wimbledon where I didn't play Novak in a quarter
07:03I guess my three quarters before were
07:06Novak Novak and Rafa and so then I I got one where I I played Musetti and you know
07:12He he played he outplayed me and I lost and I think that's when I was like, okay. Well, maybe I can't maybe it's
07:18that excuse doesn't quite work out anymore, but
07:22No, I just
07:24It was always always genuinely like just
07:27really happy for my friends to
07:30See them have have big success. And if anything it always gave me
07:34um
07:35the
07:36The confidence that that I can do it, too
07:39about the final question
07:41About those can I got that will be jenny's.com
07:44uh
07:45congratulation first
07:47Yannick senior became number one in the world because also he won 14 tiebreakers of the last 15
07:55And you won two tiebreakers today
07:5773 73 that means that you are playing both of you the most
08:02Important points in a very solid way. Is that the real?
08:07Development of your game. I mean compared to the past years
08:11I mean, I wouldn't say that i'm necessarily playing the important points. Well because
08:18I mean in that first set I had triple set point returning
08:23to not go to a tiebreaker and I didn't convert on any of them, so
08:27It's it's tricky I mean
08:30Getting through getting through breakers winning breakers
08:33Especially when you're a big server and you're gonna find yourself in a lot of breakers it
08:38yeah, it makes a massive difference and
08:41you know
08:42you'd be shocked at how
08:45Good a player can become when they just win an extra
08:49one or two big points here and there and yeah, I mean i'm
08:52sometimes
08:54Sometimes when i'm playing well, i'm i'm coming through in those moments and sometimes when i'm playing poorly
08:58I'm i'm not coming through in those moments, you know in
09:02montreal and cincinnati I
09:04I
09:05Was very poor converting some big points played some big points very bad
09:09I lost I lost early in both those tournaments and that's that's what happens and sometimes that makes the difference but
09:15It's something that i've yeah, i've done a really good job of this year. All right. Thank you everyone. Thank you
09:23Question looking ahead to the semi-final. I mean is there a time to do it or no?
09:28That's one question
09:30Taylor obviously
09:32The match has yet to take place
09:34Tiafoe versus dimitrov. What are your thoughts first about dimitrov? And then if it's francis
09:40What are your expectations for that one? Yeah, I don't know if it's if it's
09:45uh grievoire, obviously i'll have
09:47the crowd crowd on my side for sure and
09:52It'll be an interesting matchup, you know, we've played
09:55We've played a good amount and uh, I think
09:58i've played a lot of people in
10:01this tournament so far that have
10:03Good, I guess good preparation for playing grieg or someone who's like slicing
10:07Slicing a lot of backhands and and playing it short. I've played a lot of guys the first three guys
10:11I played are all slicing backhands
10:13um, so
10:16I don't know that could be that could be an interesting one. Obviously. He's a
10:19A very good player and when he's when he's on he's he's very very on he's very good and
10:25uh
10:26foe, I mean if it's if it's foe that's gonna be
10:30That's that's gonna be a lot of fun and that's gonna be uh, just electric
10:35And yeah, I I think that would be
10:37That would be awesome for the fans as well as to be guaranteed that uh, one of us is gonna be going in the finals
