00:00Boxer meets you in the dressing room, I want a clean fight, that's good.
00:11Yeah, we take a look at the tail of the tape for our opening contest.
00:14Devin Tomko, 8-2 with three knockouts.
00:19He'll enjoy a reach advantage here tonight as well as a little bit of a height advantage.
00:25Juan Santiago with the gaudy knockout percentage.
00:28As round one begins, five of Santiago's victories, his six victories have come by way of knockout.
00:36He has lost his last five outings, three of them by knockout.
00:40So very much an all or nothing fighter.
00:42Yes, and he also will fight in any weight class where they're paying.
00:46He's fought as high as 198 pounds and as low as 162.
00:51Devin Tomko getting an opportunity to fight in his hometown.
00:55In his hometown, for the first time since 2017 when he fought Mitch Boudreau here at the Casino Lac Lime.
01:04Tomko broke a near three year absence with his win over Jonathan Sanchez in Cuernavaca, Mexico in May.
01:15Tomko had relocated his training headquarters to Los Angeles but encountered some health troubles that kept him out of the ring.
01:25He's happy to be back in action.
01:28He feels that his time in Los Angeles has added some years to his career in terms of the defensive mechanisms that he's added to his approach.
01:37You see him here keeping his hands high but his elbows down.
01:40Santiago trying to dig that left hook to the body.
01:43Nice counter left hook there from Tomko a moment ago.
01:45Catching Santiago in between a wide shot and now Tomko digs downstairs to the body.
01:52This is also where you see Corey, and forgive me if we use this phrase a lot tonight, where the amateur pedigree shines through.
02:07You can hear Tomko's corner reminding him, as you were just talking about Morgan, just reminding him to bring his hands back.
02:13You can catch a lot of these wide shots that Santiago is throwing, particularly if Tomko is working in close where he likes to operate.
02:22Yes!
02:25You see Santiago already checking for signs of blood, which is not a good sign this early in the fight.
02:35This is the final minute of the opening round.
02:42Tomko very measured here in the opening round, a little bit of a change of approach we were talking to him prior to this contest.
02:50Tomko, in the early portions of his career, was really just a straight ahead brawler.
02:55Just tuck in behind a high guard and go after it.
02:58But Tomko, you see a lot more patient, a lot calmer in his approach here in the opening round.
03:05That's what I was going to say, this is a very patient approach. Really setting it up.
03:12Tomko missing over the top of the right hand.
03:14Good counter shot there from Santiago a moment ago.
03:16A short right hand.
03:19We mentioned Santiago can be dangerous.
03:25Tomko, the side of that one shot, completely dominant in the opening frame.
03:39It would have been easy for Tomko in that opening round to sense that physically Santiago was not his match.
03:45And just overwhelm him, especially, and we're going to mention this a lot tonight, in this small ring.
03:50Just come forward, blow him into the ropes, and do what he has to do.
03:53But he instead is taking his time and letting his offense develop.
04:06I'm telling you, you're way too comfortable.
04:08Sharpen up, cut to the right.
04:11You got that?
04:12This guy's going to try.
04:13Yeah.
04:14And when your hands are up, very good defense.
04:16But when they're down, a bit too comfortable.
04:19I got you.
04:20That's all it is.
04:21Okay.
04:22Defense.
04:35So round two begins.
04:37Very direct, succinct advice there from the trainer of Devin Tomko, Jesse Ross Thompson,
04:42who is very highly regarded, particularly here in Quebec and Canadian boxing circles.
04:48Morgan, he's kind of known as the next in line, the next big name trainer here in Canada.
04:52Yes, and as you said, very good advice.
04:55Straight to the point.
04:56Keep your hands up, cut to the right, be patient, you'll get him out of here.
05:01In particular, they feel they're going to find an uppercut that will end this fight.
05:05We'll see if Tomko can unleash it here in the second round.
05:13Counter shot off the ropes there from Santiago a moment ago.
05:17As you mentioned, Morgan, Santiago has fought everywhere from welterweight to cruiserweight in his career.
05:24He's 10 pounds heavier than he was in his most recent fight,
05:27but he's 20 pounds lighter than he was three fights ago against Jan Pellerin.
05:31Yes.
05:34There's some fighters that will travel geographically anywhere, there's a check.
05:39Santiago will travel to any weight class he can make if there's a paycheck.
05:45Tomko with a little bit of a late shot there,
05:47but Santiago, likewise, warned for some impropriety there for holding on a little bit too long.
06:01Right hand down the middle there from Tomko.
06:03Tomko's landed that punch a few times tonight, right between Santiago's gloves.
06:09Again.
06:10Tomko, again, going back to the patience that he's showing here.
06:12He's not putting everything on those shots, Morgan.
06:16They're just finding the mark.
06:17Yes.
06:19Which, a lot of times, is what coaches will tell fighters to do,
06:22and fighters will tell you afterwards,
06:24especially if they've tried to push for a knockout and it didn't come,
06:27they will tell you, I can't push for it, I just have to let it come to me,
06:29and this is what it looks like Tomko's doing right now.
06:32Tomko just posting with that jab, drops the right hand to the body,
06:35moves the jab around a little bit.
06:36There's that uppercut that Jesse Ross Thompson was hoping for.
06:41First time we've seen Tomko unleash that here in this fight.
06:44It connects.
06:47There's Tomko going to the body to set up the overhand right to the head.
06:52Taking a little step to his right, brings the left hook across,
06:57and Santiago,
07:00body language of Santiago changing just a little bit right now
07:04as Tomko turning up the temperature.
07:08Tomko whaling away with that right hand.
07:11Catches the reply from Santiago and comes right back with a chopping right hand
07:15and then brings it downstairs to the body.
07:18And Tomko's doing a smart thing here, he's not accepting the clinch,
07:21he's not giving Santiago a chance to rest.
07:24Santiago looks like he might not be in that great of shape,
07:27and Tomko's making him pay for it.
07:29Now Santiago takes a knee,
07:32and I don't know that he'll be getting up.
07:34The corner of Santiago is up on the apron with the towel,
07:38and that is it.
07:40Devin Tomko with a second round stoppage victory
07:44in his return bout in his hometown.
07:55And I don't know how much we can read into a win like that
07:57against an opponent like that,
07:58but it did impress me that for all of the physical differences
08:01between the two of them,
08:02it also became clear that Devin Tomko was thinking
08:05one or two steps ahead of Santiago.
08:07Santiago had the one punch he wanted to land, the counter left hook.
08:12Tomko had sequences he wanted to unfold,
08:15and he let it go.
08:17As we take a look back at how this one ended here, Morgan.
08:24Yeah, that counter left hook there was kind of Santiago's last stand.
08:29And that right hand to the jaw was the point
08:32where Santiago decided he had had enough,
08:34even if it took him a couple seconds to get there.
08:38So a nice win for Devin Tomko,
08:40and we mentioned that Juan Santiago in the past,
08:43three fights ago, fought Jan Pellerin.
08:45And I think that Tomko fits nicely into a nice little domestic scene
08:49at 175 we have here at Canada.
08:51Guys like Nick Fantuzzi, Terry Osias, Bhuneet Bisla.
08:54You know, a round robin between those four guys right now
08:57could produce a tremendous action fight.
08:59Well, the challenge in Canada is getting the top Canadians
09:03to fight the other top Canadians, because it is risky,
09:05because nobody wants to risk their record or their reputation
09:08and lose in Canada.
09:10If you're going to lose, it might as well be for more money
09:12to an American, unless you can find that type of money domestically.
09:18Like we were talking the other day about Donovan Boucher
09:21and Sean O'Sullivan back in the day,
09:22like a real neighborhood fight in Toronto.
09:24I don't know that that environment really exists anymore.
09:27It might more so in Montreal, but in Toronto, no.
09:31We'll see what's next for Devin Tomko, but he's back at home.
09:34He's rebuilding his fan base here.
09:36And he picks up another knockout victory,
09:38and it looks like we are ready to make it official.
09:47As Tomko puts his merch back on, the Manitoba mauler.
09:52Some nice-looking merch. I appreciate that.
09:54That's also a quality old-school nickname.
09:57Yeah.
10:10All right, we are ready to make this one official,
10:12and we will send it now back down to the center of the ring.
10:21Ladies and gentlemen, official time.
10:23Three minutes of round number two.
10:26Referee Yvon Goulet stops the fight,
10:28declaring the winner by TKO,
10:32Devin Tomko!
10:35Devin Tomko!
10:37Devin Tomko!
10:39Devin Tomko!
10:41Devin Tomko!
10:43Devin Tomko!
10:45Devin Tomko!
10:47Devin Tomko!
10:50Devin Tomko!
10:58So Devin Tomko improves to 9-2.
