00:00Your homepage is the digital storefront to your business, and optimising it for SEO
00:05is crucial. Not only for making it look how you want it to look on the search engines,
00:09but also for your audience to get to know your business better.
00:12Tell me if this is familiar to you. You saw an ad, maybe from Facebook,
00:17and you purchased the product for a specific purpose. But when you search for the company,
00:21you realise that they provide a lot more products and services that you need.
00:25And that realisation starts with the homepage. So in this video,
00:30let's break down the essential steps to make your homepage SEO and human-friendly. Let's go.
00:38Hey, it's Jack from RankMath, the one tool that brings you easy to use
00:42SEO and AI tools, and this channel provides you with tips,
00:46tricks and tutorials to grow your search traffic. So if you're new to us, subscribe.
00:50Now, it doesn't matter if your homepage is a static page that looks amazing,
00:54or one that looks like a blog role. Either way, you will be able to optimise your homepage for
00:59SEO. So even if your site is running on Shopify, Framer or whatever, this information is for you.
01:06So if you're ready, let's get started with the first optimisation.
01:11Normally when we think about optimising the meta title of our homepage,
01:15particularly the most prominent feature on the search engine results,
01:18we would think about optimising just the brand name, right? But check this out.
01:23If we search for an important keyword for RankMath, which is
01:26Best Free WordPress SEO Tools, you will find us on the first page.
01:31And that's because we have optimised the meta title of our homepage with this.
01:35Now, that section after your brand name is normally meant for the slogan. So if you already
01:40have an established slogan, don't worry. You have the rest of the homepage to optimise for keywords.
01:46However, if the slogan is flexible, then we recommend that you brainstorm some keyword
01:51ideas you think will drive sales, get attention or whatever the focus of your website is.
01:56And then you want to validate if there are people searching for those keywords
01:59on keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner, WordStream, Ahrefs, etc.
02:04And after that, pick the one that has the most search volume that aligns with your business.
02:09If you need a tutorial on keyword research, you can check out this video.
02:12And if you need free keyword research tools, you can check out this video.
02:16Links are in the description. Hope they help.
02:18Now, to optimise the meta title and description of your homepage,
02:21it depends if your homepage is a blog role or a specific page.
02:25You can hover over settings, and check out the reading settings.
02:29If your homepage displays your latest posts, such as something like this.
02:33As a RankMath user, you can optimise the meta title and descriptions
02:37by visiting RankMath's titles and meta, click on homepage,
02:41and you can customise the homepage title as well as the description accordingly.
02:46For example, the brand of this site is Smoking Meats.
02:49This is the result of the site name variable.
02:51And you want to add a separator that looks like this.
02:55And the slogan will be The Ultimate BBQ Experience.
02:59I will explain where RankMath gets this information in a while,
03:02but for now, you can optimise your meta description as well.
03:05For example, Elevate Your Outdoor Cooking with Smoking Meats.
03:09You see, once again, we optimised our brand name in the meta description,
03:13and we have included an important keyword, outdoor cooking.
03:16And then, check out our top rated BBQ grills, which is another important keyword.
03:22Ideal for smoking, grilling, and searing.
03:25You see, we have included many relevant keywords in the meta description,
03:29and the key is to be natural.
03:31Do not stuff keywords in the meta description.
03:34And most importantly, the description should thoroughly explain
03:37what your company is about and what it offers.
03:40Anyway, these variables are taking information from your site settings.
03:44Under Settings, and General, these are the information added to the meta title.
03:50Now, if instead, you've assigned a page as your homepage,
03:53under the reading settings, let's say that I've created a page called Homepage,
03:58and I've assigned it as the homepage, and let's save changes.
04:02In that case, you will need to customise the meta title and description
04:06directly from the assigned page.
04:08As you visit the list of pages on your site, you can find the assigned homepage here.
04:13Click on Edit, go to the Rank Maths tab, click on Edit Stipit,
04:18and from here, you can edit the meta title and description accordingly.
04:22Similarly, I would add the site title variable,
04:26have a separator, and add the site description.
04:30And as for the meta description, I would add the same.
04:34As you close this, and save changes, your meta title and description will now be optimised.
04:40If you're not sure what keywords to focus on for your homepage,
04:45simply leverage on your biggest competitor.
04:47For example, if Rank Math is your biggest competitor, simply copy their homepage URL,
04:53and then you want to search for Rank Math SEO Analyzer, and visit this tool.
04:58It is a free tool to use.
05:00We have left a link to this page in the description as well.
05:03And then you want to pop the URL in this field and click Analyse.
05:07In a few seconds, you will get a report.
05:10And right here, the common keywords,
05:12these are the keywords you should focus on optimising for your homepage to beat your competitor.
05:18Give the tool a try, I'm pretty sure you'll find it useful.
05:22Now this is the most basic SEO principle any website owners need to follow.
05:26It doesn't matter if you're writing a blog,
05:28creating service pages, or optimising your homepage,
05:31proper heading hierarchy needs to be followed.
05:34Every page on your website, including your homepage, can only have one H1 heading tag.
05:40On WordPress, the page title will be H1, so you don't want to leave it as Homepage.
05:45You want to optimise it the same way it appears in the meta title.
05:49And then any titles you add after that should be H2s.
05:53Now H2s will allow readers or site visitors to understand the hierarchy of the page,
05:58but they help expand the main topic which is H1.
06:01And if you want to further describe a H2 heading and separate your content into sections,
06:06you would use H3, such as something like this.
06:10So if you want to see the overall hierarchy of your homepage,
06:13bring your mouse over to this document overview, click on it, select Outline,
06:18it will show you the hierarchy of your page.
06:20As I've shown you earlier, H2s will explain the H1, which is the title of your page,
06:26and then these H3 heading tags will further explain this H2 heading.
06:31Never use a H3 without a H2, or have a H4 without a H3, you have to follow the hierarchy.
06:38For example, this looks like a nice place to add a heading, and if I put this as H6,
06:43in the outline it will show you that there is an incorrect heading level.
06:47So you have to respect the heading hierarchy.
06:49Now again, if you don't know what H2 heading tags to use for your business,
06:54do you remember we used RankMath's SEO Analyzer earlier on Your Biggest Competitor?
06:58There is this section called H2 Headings,
07:01where it will tell you what headings your competitors has used,
07:04and from here you can have a better idea on what heading you should optimise for your business.
07:11Now having a brandable logo on your homepage as well as the favicon is a no-brainer.
07:16It is a must-have if you want your business to stand out.
07:19For example, would you want your customers to search for your site and find this?
07:24It is unprofessional, right?
07:26And it is screaming, do not trust this business, it is sketchy.
07:30Or if someone visits the homepage, and the logo is just a text link,
07:35it shows no effort in branding and differentiation.
07:38And what does that say about your business?
07:41I can only think about the negative things.
07:43Nowadays, it is so easy to get a nice looking logo for your business.
07:47Simply search for the keyword, AI Logo Designer,
07:50and you will find some tools and services that will get the job done.
07:53And once you have a nice looking logo, here is where you will place them.
07:57Now every WordPress theme works differently.
08:00But for most themes, you can visit the theme customiser by hovering over Appearance,
08:05and select Customise.
08:07And in the theme editor, you will need to find something called Site Identity.
08:11And from here, you can add the favicon so that your logo will appear on both the browser tab,
08:17and on the search results.
08:20And then, you will also want to add your logo in the header.
08:23For the currently installed theme, it will be in the header.
08:26I'll click on the logo, and add the site logo here.
08:30Now your favicon can be different from the logo you add here.
08:34But it is really up to you.
08:35I'll adjust the size, and save changes.
08:39Now one more place to add your site logo, and it is on RankMath.
08:43Because if your site logo were to appear anywhere on the search results page,
08:47it would look like this.
08:49Anyway, back to the site, let's head over to RankMath's dashboard.
08:53If you have not gone through the setup wizard,
08:56we highly recommend that you do so because one of the steps would ask for your site logo.
09:00But if you have gone through that, and you want to change the site logo,
09:04then visit the titles and meta, and under Local SEO,
09:08scroll down a little, and you will see the logo section.
09:12Where it recommends having a squared image, with a minimum dimension of 112 pixels on each side.
09:20It will be really tempting to add as many internal links from your homepage
09:24to every page of your website to spread out the link equity.
09:27There is a high chance that your homepage will have the most back links.
09:30Now if your site is small, there is no issue.
09:33But what if your site has hundreds or thousands of pages?
09:36It just doesn't make sense to add all the links on your homepage.
09:40So don't overload your homepage, header menu or footer with too many links.
09:45Keep them focused on what you want your audience to do.
09:48If your site offers one or two products or services, much like RankMath,
09:52you would keep it focused on your offerings.
09:55We offer an SEO plugin.
09:57We have an integrated AI tool called Content AI.
10:00We show the pricing for both the products.
10:02We offer free tools as well.
10:04Here's where you will get support.
10:06And this is for existing customers to log into their account.
10:10All these are internal links,
10:12which means that they link back to a page on the same website.
10:15You see, all these make sense, right?
10:18The key is to understand the needs and wants of your new and existing customers.
10:23Now at the top of the page, which is the hero section,
10:25you will have a clear call to action to tell your new site visitors what to do.
10:30For us, you can download RankMath plugin for free.
10:32You can try the demo here.
10:34What to add here depends on the focus of your business.
10:38What is the main thing you want your site visitors to do?
10:41And then as you scroll through the page,
10:43you don't want to cram as much information onto the page.
10:47Only the important ones.
10:49For example, RankMath has many different features,
10:51but we do not add all of them here.
10:54We place a link to another page that lists the full features.
10:58And as you scroll down further,
11:00we share with you some important features.
11:02And right here, notice this call to action button?
11:06This links to the same page that lists all the features.
11:10Take note of this link at the bottom left.
11:12As I hover over the call to action button,
11:14you can see that it links to the same page.
11:17So the links on this homepage are very focused.
11:20It leads the visitors to one focused page.
11:22And as you scroll down further, if a site visitor decides to get RankMath Pro,
11:27they can check out the pricing page.
11:29If not, they can download the free version of the plugin.
11:32And then at the footer,
11:34this is where you will place internal links to other important pages of your site.
11:38Like your recommended links,
11:40your important guides on how your product works,
11:43links to your company's pages,
11:44about your brands,
11:46and other pages your site visitors may find useful.
11:51Social proof can be in a form of reviews from satisfied customers.
11:55It can be icons from clients or companies you have worked with.
11:58It can be customer reviews from third-party sites like Trustpilot,
12:02media mentions,
12:03industry awards or certificates,
12:05and influencer endorsements.
12:07And having these social proofs on your homepage can positively contribute to the experience,
12:12expertise,
12:13authoritativeness,
12:14and trustworthiness,
12:15EEAT,
12:16which are crucial components to Google's search quality guidelines.
12:19So if you have the slightest form of endorsement from your customers
12:23or some authority figure in your niche,
12:25you want to add them to your homepage.
12:27Now just a hint,
12:28if your business or site is new,
12:30whenever you have a customer,
12:32ask them to leave a review for your business.
12:34And if you want to ease their troubles of coming up with a review,
12:38use this.
12:39On RankMath's dashboard,
12:40make sure that the content AI module is toggled on,
12:43and then you want to visit the content AI module.
12:46Search for testimonial,
12:47and you will find a tool here.
12:49Click on it.
12:50Now add the name of your product or service.
12:53Ask what your customer likes about your product or service,
12:56and you can help them fill this up.
12:58If your customers have any negative things to say about your product,
13:01you can add them here to have a balanced view.
13:03Add a focus keyword if you have any.
13:05Select an appropriate audience.
13:07Add a tone.
13:08This depends on your customer's tone of voice.
13:11Select a length.
13:12The short option will generate 1-2 sentences.
13:14The medium option will generate 3-4 sentences.
13:17And the long option will generate more than 5 sentences.
13:21Now select a language.
13:22There are over 28 languages and more will be added.
13:25Select the number of outputs.
13:27And hit generate.
13:29In a few seconds,
13:30show this to your customer and ask for approval to use it.
13:35Just like any blog post or pages,
13:37it will be plain boring if it is just text.
13:40So try to include images or even videos whenever possible.
13:44Like describing the features of your product or service.
13:47Giving a demonstration of your product.
13:50Explaining what your business is about.
13:52And it is always nice to have images of people who left a testimonial for your business.
13:57And the thing is,
13:58whenever you add an image on your page,
14:01you want to make sure to visit the image settings
14:03and add an alternative text or in short,
14:06the alt text for your image.
14:08This is to describe what your image is about.
14:11This not only enhances the browsing experience of the visually impaired,
14:14but also for people who do not have proper internet connection.
14:18And if you need help describing the image,
14:20you can always rely on Content AI to write it for you.
14:24Simply click on generate alt,
14:26and a description will be generated for you.
14:31Now, user experience is a very broad topic.
14:34It can be improving your site speed,
14:36reducing intrusive marketing and animations.
14:38It can be mobile optimisation,
14:40better navigation, etc.
14:43So we will tackle them one at a time,
14:45starting with mobile optimisation.
14:48Nowadays, everyone visits a website with their mobile phones.
14:51So if your website is not mobile optimised,
14:54there is a high likelihood that people will leave your site immediately
14:57without checking its content.
14:59So to check if your homepage is mobile friendly,
15:02feel free to visit this page.
15:04This is the link.
15:05We have left the same in the description.
15:07Now simply copy and paste your homepage URL here,
15:11and click on analyse.
15:13And in a while, you will know if your site is mobile friendly or not.
15:17There is no excuse not to have a mobile friendly website these days
15:21because there are vast tools like modern WordPress themes
15:24that are mobile friendly by default.
15:26But anyway, talking about intrusive marketing.
15:29I don't know about you,
15:31but I personally dislike sites that use pop-ups like this
15:35that hijack your attention.
15:36It used to work, but it is getting annoying nowadays.
15:39And what about sites that place almost 30% of the screen with advertisements,
15:44especially on their homepage?
15:46I would like to hear your opinion on this.
15:48Do you personally like these types of marketing in this day and age?
15:52Let me know in the comments.
15:53Anyway, as we are moving towards the future,
15:56we will see more and more sites having clean animations and motion graphics,
16:00like WP Rocket.
16:02As you can see, these animations clearly help with communicating its product offerings.
16:07And sites like Dropbox that gives a wow factor
16:10and communicates their features with every scroll.
16:14So animations, when used properly, can elevate the user experience.
16:20Now if your site is built for the purpose of allowing people to search for something,
16:24such as a site like Property Guru,
16:26where people need to find available house to buy or rent,
16:29then it will make sense to add a search function to your homepage.
16:33Or if your site is like Amazon where you sell lots of different products,
16:37it will make sense to have a search bar as well.
16:40With it, people can find what they need quicker,
16:43and this will help improve the user experience.
16:46And finally, when talking about improving site speed,
16:49it is a big topic on its own,
16:51and we have provided quite a few unique tips to help you out.
16:54Feel free to check out this video right here.
16:55The link is in the description.
16:57So these are the homepage SEO you should implement.
17:00And of course, after the implementation,
17:02you should run your homepage through RankMath's SEO Analyzer,
17:06and it will provide you with more optimization tips
17:09to make sure that your homepage is well optimized for SEO.
17:12Oh, and some additional tips.
17:14Try to build backlinks to your homepage,
17:17as this will help improve the site's EEAT.
