00:00Saudi Arabia's journey towards establishing a film industry began with the Vision 2030
00:06plan initiated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
00:09The plan seeks to diversify the kingdom's economy, reduce its dependency on oil, and
00:14modernize various sectors, including entertainment.
00:17The reopening of cinemas in 2018 after a 35-year ban marked a significant milestone in this
00:24direction.
00:25While the economic and cultural benefits of a film industry are evident, the move towards
00:29establishing this industry in Saudi Arabia raises serious questions from an Islamic perspective.
00:37Islam is not just a religion, it is a complete way of life, guiding every aspect of a Muslim's
00:44daily activities, including entertainment.
00:47The content of many films often reflects values and lifestyles that are not in line with Islamic
00:53teachings.
00:54Issues such as the portrayal of illicit relationships, the glorification of materialism, and the
00:59trivialization of sinful behaviors can be prevalent in films.
01:04In a society like Saudi Arabia, which has historically been deeply rooted in Islamic
01:08values, the promotion of such content can lead to a gradual erosion of these values.
01:14The Quran warns against indulging in actions that can lead one astray from the path of
01:19righteousness.
01:20Allah says in Surah Al-Ankabut,
01:22And the life of this world is nothing but play and amusement.
01:26But far better is the house in the Hereafter for those who are al-mutqin, the pious.
01:31Will you not then understand?
01:34This verse reminds Muslims that the pleasures and distractions of this world, including
01:38entertainment, should not lead them away from their religious obligations.
01:43One of the primary concerns is the depiction of living beings, particularly humans and
01:49animals, in films.
01:52According to some interpretations of Islamic teachings, creating images or statues of
01:57living beings is discouraged or prohibited.
02:01Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is reported to have said,
02:05The people who will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers.
02:12Movies by their nature involve the depiction of human and animal figures, often in ways
02:17that might not align with Islamic modesty and morality.
02:21The portrayal of immodesty, violence, or immoral behavior in films can be particularly concerning
02:27as it may influence viewers and lead them away from Islamic principles.
02:32Films have the power to shape culture and influence social norms.
02:36In many cases, the content of films may challenge traditional values and promote ideologies
02:42that are at odds with Islamic teachings.
02:45This can lead to a gradual shift in societal attitudes, particularly among the younger
02:49generation who are more susceptible to the influence of the media.
02:53Islam places a strong emphasis on modesty, family values, and moral conduct.
03:01The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said,
03:04Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock.
03:09The ruler is a shepherd and responsible for his subjects.
03:13This hadith highlights the responsibility of leaders to protect and guide their people
03:18according to Islamic principles.
03:20The introduction of a film industry, if not carefully regulated, could undermine these
03:25principles by exposing the population to content that contradicts Islamic values.
03:30Additionally, if the film industry is to be pursued, it should be done with strict adherence
03:36to Islamic guidelines.
03:38This includes ensuring that the content is Sharia-compliant, avoids promoting un-Islamic
03:43values, and contributes positively to society.
03:46As Muslims, it is important to approach such developments with caution, ensuring that they
03:51align with Islamic teachings and contribute positively to the moral and spiritual well-being
03:57of society.
