00:00And right now, let's invite Ms. Joanne Maglipon, the EIC of PEP.
00:12Ms. Joanne, you're used to this?
00:15No, I'm normally behind the desk.
00:19But welcome to our program.
00:22And we thank you for joining us in our campaign and our advocacy.
00:27Now, let's put it in the perspective of the Philippine Entertainment Portal or PEP.
00:34Of course, here in the show business, there are a lot of fake news spreading.
00:40For you, how do you fight those kinds of news, those kinds of lies all over the internet from the perspective of PEP?
00:53Actually, I have to begin by saying that I take entertainment journalism very seriously.
00:59Look at the way our Senate is filled with movie stars.
01:05We've had a movie star president.
01:09And the frontrunners, as of now, although early, for the midterms and for the next national presidential election,
01:20you have all these celebrity names.
01:24More than ever, therefore, I think PEP has to do its job.
01:29And the way to do it is, you know, it's incremental.
01:33It's case to case. It's every day.
01:35Every time you report on somebody, when you do a profile of a celebrity,
01:41make sure that you drop only the adjectives, adverbs, descriptions that fit.
01:48You do not go saying, oh, this productive, generous, etc. person is such.
01:57When you do not know for a fact, that's what I tell my team,
02:01when you do not know for a fact that they are indeed generous and productive.
02:06So, truth telling at show business level, to me, it's so urgent.
02:14Because the people, the majority, have name recall of these celebrities and it's do or die for the country.
02:22That's right.
02:23Well, you defined already your role, especially in the 2025 midterm elections.
02:28A lot of personalities from show business are going to join us here.
02:34But I think, and personally, reporting for entertainment,
02:37you're one of the most experienced ones in dealing with fake news and in trying to fight it.
02:43Personally, what are the challenges that you're facing now on a consistent basis regarding fake news?
02:50The problem with celebrities, they are guarded in very real ways by their production team, their managers,
03:04their networks, or whichever infrastructure surrounds them.
03:10The name, the imaging, it's so guarded that just to penetrate, get access, requires a lot of networking,
03:19requires a lot of people, person skills.
03:25You need to be liked.
03:27But at the same time, you know that you, as a journalist, are not in the business of being liked.
03:33You're in the business of getting, ferreting out what you can, the truth.
03:37So, it's always cesefos, I think.
03:41Really, an uphill battle, uphill.
03:45Okay.
03:46Ms. Joanne, I want to thank you for joining us here in the live stream.
03:49Yeah.
03:50Thank you, thank you.
03:51Thank you very much.
03:52It's an honor.
03:53Of course, that's the EIC, the Philippine Entertainment Portal, or PEP,
03:56joining us here, sa paglaban, or panatok natin, contra fake news.
04:00Salamat.
04:01Maraming salamat po.
