00:00Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, and one of North Africa's easygoing cities.
00:11Yet, behind its laid-back approach is an exotic appeal.
00:17Tunis deserves to be the perfect introduction to the region.
00:23You'll find most of the main sightseeing in the Medina or Old Town,
00:28which is already an attraction in itself.
00:33There are winding routes along the alleyways, and behind the high walls, you may find yourself lost.
00:40But that's the charm of the city.
00:44There's the fabulous mosaic collection of the world-famous Bardo Museum.
00:50And then, there's the remnants of the once-glorious Carthage that's a tourist highlight.
00:56Carthage, the fabled wealthy seafaring city of the Phoenicians, lies scattered across the Bay of Tunis.
01:04Its columns and pile of marble rubble are bordered by a panorama of the Mediterranean Sea.
01:12And who could resist such a view?
01:15The sea is actually vital to Tunis' prosperity.
01:20The Carthage was completely destroyed in the Third Punic War in 146 BC.
01:27And the surviving ruins is worth the visit.
01:31The view is yet amazing, especially with its seafront setting.
01:38Meanwhile, there's also the Medina District or Old Town.
01:43It is considered Tunis' historic heart and known as the Porte de France during the colonial period.
01:52Because while the old town walls of the half-cede period may have long ago disappeared,
01:58when you get inside the mosques, mausoleums, and the madrasas, or the Islamic schools for learning,
02:05you'll see opulent tile art and splendid Fatimid and Ottoman architecture decorating the streets.
02:13Get lost in the beauty of the district's monumental relics.
02:18Last but not least is of course the shopping.
02:23In Tunis, the Souk des Chachiers is a place to be.
02:27Makers of Tunisian traditional woolen hats will be found here and are even conducting workshops.
02:36Looking for furniture to bring home?
02:39You'll find them between Rue Djemme as Zaytouna and Rue Casbah.
02:57.
