00:00David Beckham, the most recognised footballer on the planet, has played for some of the
00:20world's most successful clubs and has captained his national team through several World Cup
00:25campaigns.
00:32David Beckham's phenomenal cross-cultural resonance has made him a superstar in corners
00:36of the globe he's never even heard of, and where no one even knows how to play football.
00:42The son of a kitchen fitter and hairdresser, David Robert Joseph Beckham was born on May
00:47the 2nd 1975 in the high-density suburban area of Leytonstone, London.
00:54At a young age, he and his family moved to Chingford, where David attended the Chase
00:58Lane Primary School and spent much of his childhood practising his skills at Ridgeway
01:02Park.
01:07The son of two fanatical Manchester United supporters, Beck's love for football was
01:11entrenched at an early age.
01:15And although his young heart was set on playing at Old Trafford, it was the Tottenham Hotspurs
01:19who first recognised his prodigious talent.
01:22After a few years at Tottenham, Beck's dream came true when Manchester United signed him
01:27as a trainee on July 8, 1991.
01:32At just 16 years old, neither he or the fans had any idea of what lay in store.
01:38With ageing warriors holding the regular spots on the team, it wasn't until the 1995-96 season
01:44that he finally started seeing some regular Premier League action.
01:49By that time, Old Trafford was seeing a change of the guard, and David and his younger team-mates
01:54were dubbed Fergie's fledglings by the media.
01:59It wasn't long before Beck's and the boys had the press eating out of their hands.
02:10David Beckham's star was on the rise, and so was the confidence of his team-mates at
02:14Old Trafford.
02:15With mastermind Alex Ferguson calling the shots, and Beck's executing the plays, Man U
02:21hit one of the most dominating streaks in English football history.
02:25Between 1995 and 2003, they won six out of eight Premier League titles.
02:32Although things on the pitch were going to plan, off-field, rumours of tension between
02:36David and Sir Alex gathered momentum, including whispers of a locker-room incident where a
02:40stray boot connected with Beckham's head, moments after parting with Sir Alex's right
02:45foot.
02:46In the end, they both agreed a transfer would be the best solution, and Beck's headed for
02:50the warm, Mediterranean sun of Madrid.
03:06The change of clubs also brought about a big change of circumstances.
03:11La Liga presented Beck's with new challenges, challenges he was looking forward to meeting.
03:16It's going to be an amazing experience, because the only time I've run out onto a football
03:20pitch is either with England or with Manchester United, so running out for Real Madrid with
03:25these sort of players and this team and in front of 90,000 fans is going to be an amazing
03:31experience.
03:33Having cost their club around 35 million euros, the Real Madrid fans were keen to see results
03:38from Betts and his famous right foot.
03:41They didn't have to wait long.
03:45In fact, he scored three minutes into his La Liga debut.
03:48And although Real finished the season in fourth place, the fans couldn't be happier with their
03:52new recruit, as Beckham found the back of the net five times in his first 16 games.
04:01That year, he also claimed his first silverware with the club, winning the Supercopa de España.
04:08However, the run of good form ended there.
04:11With the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Ronaldo playing alongside him, Real's
04:16team of champions was less than the sum of its parts and struggled to match expectations.
04:24In 2006-2007, after three seasons of trovialous football, Real finally broke the drought and
04:30won the La Liga title.
04:34The victory was bittersweet for Betts, as the close of the 2006-2007 season coincided
04:40with his transfer from Madrid.
04:45On January 11, 2007, it was announced that David Beckham would be heading to the land
04:50of the free to play for Major League Soccer's LA Galaxy.
04:55As the famous midfielder was out of contract, the Galaxy picked him up for a steal and paid
05:00no transfer fee.
05:01On July 13, Betts was officially unveiled as a Galaxy player, and after debuting eight
05:06days later, he spent six weeks of his first season on the sidelines with a knee injury.
05:11The frustration continued for Betts, his teammates and the LA Galaxy supporters, when in the
05:17final MLS game of the season, they were knocked out of playoff contention with a 1-0 loss
05:22to the Chicago Five.
05:24The following season saw the Galaxy start well, but when their form headed south, debate
05:28about Beckham's effectiveness flared up.
05:33His on-field performances had been consistent but far from his best.
05:37Failing to live up to the expectations of Galaxy fans and officials, Betts was given
05:41the chance to find form back in Europe.
05:44I've been given the chance to go to Milan on loan for a few months, and I'm honoured
05:53to be given the chance.
05:55The temporary move gave Betts the opportunity to reconnect with his elusive form.
06:00It also left the door ajar for another World Cup selection.
06:05The new AC Milan recruit was clearly thrilled to be given another opportunity to mix it
06:09with other world-class footballers.
06:11He couldn't keep the smile off his face.
06:15I'm very happy to be here, it's a great honour, and I've been very lucky in my career to play
06:23at some of the biggest clubs in the world, with Manchester United, Real Madrid, and of
06:29course AC Milan.
06:33Back in Europe, Beckham found the touch that had eluded him for so long in the States,
06:37almost immediately.
06:40Although it was initially announced that he would only play for Milan until the beginning
06:44of the 2009 MLS season, his great form impressed the club so much they were keen for him to
06:51stay.
06:56If Beckham decided to stay with us, we would all be happy, but the contract is very clear,
07:02and knowing Beckham's seriousness, I think he'll respect it.
07:08But if things change, we'll be very happy for him to stay.
07:12On returning to LA, Betts was met with disgruntled Galaxy supporters.
07:16The same fans that had welcomed him in 2006 showered him with boos.
07:21It's sometimes nice to get the boos, it gives you some inspiration, especially when we play
07:29like we did and we win like we did, the boos start to go away after a while.
07:35Although the fans weren't happy with the loan, it no doubt helped Beckham's game.
07:40In his third year at the club, LA had their best season, and upon his return, they jumped
07:45from third to first in the Western Conference, and went on to win.
07:49To many fans disgust, Betts was once again loaned to AC Milan for 2010.
07:56With a career that has spanned close to two decades, David Beckham has accrued 619 games
08:02across five clubs.
08:04Of his 116 goals, he scored 87 for Manchester United.
08:15With the hype surrounding David Beckham's performances for Manchester United increasing,
08:19nobody was surprised when he made his national team debut on September 1, 1996.
08:26It wasn't until a few years later that he became a regular on the team, and played in
08:30every qualifying match leading up to the 1998 World Cup.
08:35However, his World Cup debut wasn't all chocolates and roses.
08:39The future England captain received a red card in England's second clash with Argentina.
08:45Although it didn't cost England the goal, many supporters chose to make him the scapegoat
08:49for England's early elimination.
08:53Four years down the track, both Becks and the fans had moved on, and he was keen to
08:57make amends.
08:58Yeah, I think, you know, there's certain teams that people are mentioning, and there's going
09:04to be, obviously, a lot of world-class players in this competition, and hopefully we can
09:09do well.
09:10The 2002 World Cup was a happier experience for Beckham.
09:14Not only did he captain the side to the quarter-finals, he played some great football himself.
09:19The crafty midfielder then set his sights on Euro 2004.
09:24Unfortunately, it would be a tournament he would rather forget.
09:29But this time, he had nobody to blame but himself.
09:35England found themselves eliminated from the competition in the quarter-finals via a penalty
09:39shoot-out against Portugal.
09:41Beckham missed his penalty kick, and the Three Lions lost 6-5 on penalties.
09:49In the lead-up to the 2006 World Cup, Beck set about regaining some form and silencing
09:55the demons that had haunted him in international tournaments.
10:01England's captain needed to be at his best to have any chance of taking home the cup.
10:06And although form had been eluding him at Real Madrid, with so much at stake, Becks
10:10and the fans were confident he could bring his A-game to Germany.
10:14We will win the World Cup in 2006.
10:19Come on, England!
10:21Come on, England!
10:24Germany 2006 started well for both England and their captain.
10:27After playing a part in their opening goal for the tournament, he set up two more the
10:30following game and was named Man of the Match.
10:34However, they were once again eliminated in the quarter-finals by Portugal.
10:40With a new era dawning in England under the guidance of Steve McLaren, an emotional Beck
10:44stepped down as captain and handed over the armband.
10:50Shortly afterwards, he was dropped completely from the team by McLaren.
10:54No, I think it's hard at the moment because, you know, I spent 11 years playing for England
10:59and, you know, it's always tough when I'm watching England games and I'm not involved.
11:04But, you know, I've been honoured to have been able to put the shirt on for 11 years
11:09and 94 caps and six years as captain.
11:12So I've been honoured to do that and I want to carry on doing that and that's why I've
11:16not retired as an England player and I won't retire.
11:20So, you know, you never know what the future holds, but, you know, the future is in these kids.
11:27After nine months away from international duties, Becks was recalled to the national
11:31side and in no time was setting up goals for his teammates.
11:36In his second game back, he set up two world-class assists for Michael Owen and Peter Crouch,
11:41helping England on their way to a 3-0 victory against Estonia.
11:46My career's sort of been ups and downs and when I've had highs, they've been extreme
11:51highs and when I've had lows, they've been extreme lows.
11:53So, you know, that's part of my career and part of my life and it's part of many players'
11:58lives these days.
11:59But, you know, I'll be very proud to hopefully reach that 100 cap and also get it out of
12:06the way because everybody's been talking about it for so long.
12:09It'd be good to get it and then move on, hopefully.
12:14Now in his mid-30s, Beck's international future is under constant re-evaluation.
12:20Since receiving his 100th cap in 2008, he has set his sights on being selected for another
12:25FIFA World Cup.
12:27Although it was initially thought the new England manager Fabio Capello would not include
12:32Becks in his World Cup squad, recent form and comments made by Capello suggest otherwise.
12:45Off the pitch, David Beckham's poster boy good looks and phenomenal cross-cultural appeal
12:51have made him the most famous footballer the world has ever seen.
12:55His success has much to do with his business-savvy wife, Victoria Beckham.
13:02Ever since their first meeting at a Manchester United game in 1997, the private and professional
13:07lives of Posh and Becks have been front-page fodder for magazines and tabloids throughout
13:12Europe and Asia.
13:16The world's premier football couple have three children, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz.
13:24However Posh and Beck's path to fame and fortune hasn't been an entirely smooth ride.
13:31Affair claims in 2004 left Becks in damage control, as his former personal assistant
13:37Rebecca Luz went public with an alleged romance.
13:44Rebecca claimed that while spending lengthy periods away from Posh and the kids, during
13:48their relocation to Madrid, she and David became romantically involved.
13:54To this day, the football legend has denied the allegations.
14:00I think the way the news side have treated me in the last few months has been an absolute
14:05disgrace. I've done the same with the news of the world because I think they've tried
14:09to ruin my family. I think that I've done the same with the mail because I've been called
14:17a bad father, I've been called a bad husband and my wife's been called a bad mother.
14:24But I realise as England captain and I've just said to the papers as well that I'm actually
14:29a nice person as well. So that's why I'm here, that's why I know that as England captain
14:34I need to talk to people and the fans and I just wanted to make that clear to everyone.
14:41Although this was undoubtedly a tough time, the Beckhams stayed strong and continued to
14:46build their empire.
14:49With a growing portfolio worthy of a Wall Street tycoon, they weren't afraid to use
14:53the Beckham name to sell a wide range of products.
14:59The ever-expanding Beckham brand even took on the world of publishing.
15:05Although it's not uncommon for footballers to release an autobiography or two, Becks
15:09has taken it one step further.
15:13There are currently close to 20 different titles detailing almost every aspect of the
15:18midfielder's life.
15:22There is even a book written by his father, Ted Beckham, about David's rise from park
15:26football to national team captain.
15:31Ever grateful for his boyhood opportunity to train at the Bobby Charlton Soccer School,
15:35Becks believe in the positive power of football led to the establishment of the David Beckham
15:40Academies.
15:44Becks believes that the Academies are not only about football, but also about having
15:48fun.
15:49Every sporting arena I think is important for kids, you know, firstly to get them off
15:54the streets because there's a lot of distractions out there in life and, you know, to have something
16:00like this.
16:01You know, I've always said that this Academy is not just about the elitism, it's not about
16:06finding the new great players.
16:08If it does that and if it gives the chance for kids to come down and improve their skills
16:13and become professional footballers, then great.
16:16But for me the most important thing is the kids come down, they have fun, they enjoy
16:20themselves, they learn different things in this Academy because this Academy is different
16:24from other Academies, from other soccer schools out there.
16:29Thanks to the success of the UK Academy, it wasn't long before he launched another in
16:33the US.
16:35Every time someone says to me, what do you want to do when you finish playing football,
16:39soccer, sorry, and I've said to train kids to be part of Soccer Academy and to have my
16:47own Soccer Academy, that was a dream.
16:52In early 2008, he travelled to Brazil to announce his intention to open a third Academy.
17:00He hopes that in years to come, he can start Academies in other areas of the world and
17:04ultimately open doors for young footballers that may have remained closed.
17:16On joining Real Madrid in 2003, Beckham was given the opportunity to play with some of
17:21the greatest players of the modern era.
17:23Players that I admire, I play with, so to have them players and to look up to players
17:30like that, like Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo, Roberto Carlos, Raul, to have them all in the same
17:37team as you, you can't ask for better than that.
17:40But as I said, I played for Man United for a long time and I had a lot of players in
17:44that team that I respect and having Roy Keane as a captain was a big plus for everyone and
17:50still is for Manchester United.
17:53Brazilian striker Ronaldo is a once in a generation player.
17:56Born in Rio de Janeiro on September 22, 1976, he is one of only two men to be named the
18:02World Footballer of the Year on three separate occasions.
18:06Joining Real Madrid in 2002, just one year before David Beckham, it didn't take long
18:11for Ronaldo to find form.
18:14He finished his first season scoring 30 goals from just 44 appearances.
18:19Despite being constantly dogged by injuries, the Brazilian has won two World Cups and
18:24claimed over 50 individual honours.
18:27Portuguese legend Luis Figo is another member of the star-studded Real Madrid team.
18:32Playing as an attacking midfielder, the 2001 World Player of the Year was involved in one
18:36of the most controversial transfers in football history.
18:39In 2000, he moved from Spanish rivals FC Barcelona to arch enemies Real Madrid for the then world
18:46record fee of around 41 million euros.
18:50Barca have never forgiven him.
18:53Former Man United captain Roy Keane is no doubt one of the most loved footballers down
18:58at Old Trafford.
18:59Who is your favourite player on Man United?
19:03Keane.
19:04With a career that lasted close to two decades, he played 480 times for the Red Devils and
19:09scored 51 goals.
19:12Apart from David Beckham, Bobby Moore would have to be the most renowned captain of England.
19:17With close to 700 appearances in club football, the London-born Moore made his international
19:22debut in May 1962.
19:25Just one year later, at the tender age of 22, he captained his country for the first
19:30time.
19:31However, it was in the 1966 World Cup that he etched his name into the record books.
19:37In the first World Cup final against West Germany, England won 3-2 in extra time.
19:43Beckham became the first person to captain England to World Cup glory and remains England's
19:47sole World Cup winning captain to this day.
19:55With his football career drawing to a close, these days Becks is more likely to be perceived
20:00as a businessman, fashion icon, heartthrob, charity campaigner and father who occasionally
20:06plays football.
20:08His forever changing hairstyles have not only sold magazines but also caught the imagination
20:13of the public who try to keep up with and mimic Beck's style.
20:19This Becksteria has his sponsors doing cartwheels.
20:23Adidas, one of his major sponsors, have enjoyed quite a prosperous relationship with the heartthrob
20:28for many years.
20:30They've got David endorsing everything from Adidas footwear to footballs and the marketing
20:35team just have to sit back and let the Beckham name do the rest.
20:41Crowned the ultimate metrosexual in 2002, a partnership with an eyewear company seemed
20:46the perfect fit for Becks.
20:49Police sunglasses, who took their inspiration worn from eyewear by US police officers in
20:54the 1980s, have used the megastar to promote their collection all over the globe.
21:01Mobile technology is another area in which he earned some serious cash away from football.
21:07Vodafone was one of the first big sponsors to jump on board the Beckham bandwagon, but
21:12when they failed to meet an agreement in 2005, it left the door open for mobile phone competitor
21:18Motorola.
21:20Years later, Motorola is still merrily shelling out millions to have Beck's help shift their
21:25products.
21:27Not only have David and Victoria carefully nurtured his portfolio of sponsorships and
21:32endorsements, they've also started creating their own labels.
21:37At Macy's in New York City, the power couple launched their new fragrance, Beckham Signature,
21:42in September of 2008.
21:45If the hysteria surrounding Posh and Becks at the launch was a measure of success, then
21:50the glamour couple are on to another winner.
21:56With huge sponsors like Adidas and Pepsi on his side, David's earning capacity is enormous,
22:01pulling around 16.5 million euros yearly.
22:10Although his salary might not match the likes of Lionel Messi, his income away from football
22:15easily compensates for that.
22:19At last count, the David Beckham empire was estimated to be worth around $225 million.
22:27This wealth can be attributed to his privileged position as the most famous sports person
22:32on the planet.
22:34And his appearance at the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games didn't do
22:39any harm to his profile.
22:42Really a proud moment for myself to be involved in something like this, you know, it's something
22:46that I was really proud to be obviously asked to be part of the bid and now to be part of
22:53the closing ceremony and the handover was, you know, an amazing moment for myself.
22:59Another proud moment came when he received an Order of the British Empire in June 2003
23:04for his services to football.
23:07The prestigious honour gave a much needed boost to the midfielder who was in the midst
23:11of a transfer from Manchester United.
23:16The honour would undeniably mark one of Beckham's greatest personal achievements.
23:22Throughout his career he has claimed a number of other personal honours.
23:26In 1996-97 he was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year as well as the PFA Young
23:32Player of the Year.
23:34With the U.S. at his feet, a loving family to support him and hundreds of millions in
23:38the bank, Leighton Stone's favourite son has laid the foundations for a life of luxury.
23:45With his football career drawing to a close, the sky is the limit for this football hero.
