00:00Three times World Footballer of the Year and World Cup Hero, Zinedine Zidane wowed fans
00:22and terrified opponents with his divine skills during a career that has spanned more than
00:27two decades.
00:32Arguably the best player ever to come out of France, Zidane, or Zizou, as he is affectionately
00:37known to fans around the world, enjoyed an epic career that few could match.
00:42His brilliant ball control, incredible vision, precise passing and ability to read the game
00:47took football to another level.
00:52On the field, he was a general, leading his side by example through a perfect cross or
00:57a sizzling strike.
00:58He was never far away from the action.
01:04Off the pitch, he has been just as impressive.
01:07Tireless in his charity work for those less fortunate than himself, he is also a devoted
01:12family man.
01:15Zidane's incredible journey began in La Castellane, one of the poorest immigrant quarters of the
01:20French city Marseille.
01:22Marseille is home to over 1.6 million residents, making it the second most populous French
01:27city.
01:28Born to Algerian parents, Zidane took to football immediately.
01:33He was often seen honing his ball skills in dimly lit alleyways for hours each day, and
01:38it soon became clear that he was destined for something special.
01:43Many football aficionados believed that it was Zidane's tough start in a rough neighbourhood
01:48that furnished him with the mental toughness to handle the pressures of first-class football.
01:55At an early age, he joined US Saint-Henri, a local club in his hometown of La Castellane.
02:01Then at the age of 14, he displayed his sublime talent at the first-year junior selection
02:06for the League Championship, where he caught the eye of many Ligue 1 clubs, in particular
02:12AS Kahn.
02:15Originally intending to spend six weeks with Les Dragon Rouge, young Zizou ended up staying
02:20four years.
02:22During his time, he made his Ligue 1 debut as a 17-year-old.
02:26However, it wasn't until he was transferred to Bordeaux that he really began to shine.
02:33During his four-year stint at Bordeaux, Zidane played 139 games and scored 28 goals.
02:40His brilliant performances earned him selection for Le Bleu, the French national team.
02:51Zidane's performances, domestically and internationally, started to generate a huge amount of hype,
02:57and it wouldn't be long before the big clubs of Europe came after him.
03:01In the end, it was Champions League winners and Italian super club Juventus that snatched
03:06up the 24-year-old for a mere 3 million euros.
03:10Juventus immediately recognised the attacking midfielder's potential.
03:15With the help of Zidane's attacking skills, Juventus won the 1996-97 Scudetto and the
03:21International Cup with a 1-0 win over River Plate.
03:25In the following seasons, he led the Italian club to the 1997 and 1998 UEFA Champions League
03:31finals.
03:33Unfortunately, however, they ended up losing both, going down to Borussia Dortmund 3-1
03:38in 1997 and then Real Madrid 1-0 in 1998.
03:45Despite these disappointing results, Juventus and their number one recruit were still able
03:49to claim their second consecutive league championship, winning the Scudetto in 1997-98.
03:57In three short years, Zizou went from being a good player with potential to becoming one
04:01of the best players in the world. While at Juventus, he made 151 appearances, scoring
04:0724 times. He also helped them to a tally of six titles.
04:16Playing the best football of his career, it was only a matter of time before he got the
04:20call from Spanish giant Real Madrid.
04:23With Juventus keen to hold on to the emerging superstar, Real were forced to dig deep to
04:28get their man. Luckily, the Spanish super club had money to burn, and in 2001 they sealed
04:34the deal with a world record transfer fee of approximately 78 million euros.
04:42During the first quarter of his handsome four-year contract with Real, Zinedine did not disappoint
04:47his new club. He played a major role in winning the Whites an impressive two titles for the
04:52season, including Real's successful UEFA Champions League campaign.
04:58Zizou was more than happy with the victory.
05:06It's true that for me it was the third final, and I'd already lost two, so it was mandatory
05:11that I should win this one. I believe it is a great satisfaction for the team to have
05:16this great and difficult victory.
05:23His steely determination was instrumental in Real's 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen
05:28to claim their ninth UEFA Champions League title.
05:33The match was hotly contested throughout. Zinedine Zidane scored the winning goal in
05:38the 45th minute, after volleying a left foot shot that streaked into the top corner.
05:45Deservedly Zizou was named man of the match.
05:48I think the most important thing was to be able to win the Champions League.
05:56The thing to do now is to rest a little bit and then think about the World Cup, hoping
06:03that it is going to be a good World Cup.
06:08At Real, Zinedine played 155 games, scoring 37 goals. He played his last game for the
06:15Whites on May 7, 2006, but not before winning six titles with the Spanish club.
06:27Holding a dual citizenship, Zinedine Zidane could choose whether to play for Algeria or
06:31France. However, on August 17, 1994, at the age of 22, the decision was made for him when
06:39he was handed his first international cap for France in a friendly against the Czech
06:43Republic. Zizou made an immediate impact, scoring twice to salvage a 2-2 draw.
06:50Only a few months later, his international career was given a big leg up after French
06:54playmaker Eric Cantona received a 12-month suspension in January 1995 for assaulting
07:00a fan. Cantona's misfortune catapulted Zinedine into the limelight, and from there he never
07:06looked back. In Euro 1996, France's new playmaker led them all the way to the semi-finals,
07:12where they were eliminated by the Czech Republic in a penalty shootout.
07:17Although he hadn't scored in the tournament, Euro 96 gave him a taste of life at the top
07:22end, and an understanding of what was expected at international level. Two years later, he
07:28was given the opportunity to show the world his skills in another international tournament,
07:32the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Meeting little encouragement to flaunt his prodigious talent, he held the
07:42spotlight, creating spontaneous and exciting plays, and leading Le Bleu all the way to
07:47the World Cup final. With the scene set for a tense, colossal final between the reigning
07:54champions Brazil and hometown favourites France, the whole world tuned in, expecting the Brazilians
08:00to emerge as victors. Zinedine Zidane had other ideas, scoring two remarkable goals
08:07in the first half, to set up a 3-0 whitewash over the much fancied Brazilians. He single-handedly
08:14won his country its first ever World Cup. Not surprisingly, he was the toast of France.
08:21I have little to say except thank you for your support. Take care and enjoy the moment.
08:38After the hype of their 1998 World Cup victory, France struggled to repeat the performance
08:43in the tournaments that followed. And after a disappointing 2002 FIFA World Cup, France
08:49set their sights on Euro 2004. Finishing at the top of their group, it seemed that
08:58the World Cup hangover was finally starting to lift. However, their quest for the European
09:04Cup ended in the quarter-finals, upon losing 1-0 to eventual winners Greece. Zinedine's
09:12next tournament was the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and with two World Cups behind him, he already
09:22knew what it took to win. Their tempestuous passage through to the semi-finals involved
09:27a two-game suspension for Zizou, who redeemed himself by scoring the only goal in a 1-0
09:33win against Portugal. France would play Italy in the final. The
09:40game got off to a frantic start, with both teams scoring in the first 20 minutes. However,
09:48no other goals were scored for the rest of the game, and in the 110th minute, the intense
09:53pressure got the better of Zinedine. In what can only be described as a mental meltdown,
10:01he suddenly stopped, turned and rammed his head into Materazzi's chest, knocking the
10:06Italian to the ground. Zidane received a red card, his football career was over. To
10:29make matters worse, France eventually lost to Italy in a penalty shootout. For his actions,
10:35Zinedine was read the riot act.
10:37Zinedine Zidane has been suspended for three matches and fined with 7,500 Swiss francs.
10:52However, that's the big important information, the committee has taken note that Zinedine
11:00Zidane has ended his international career and has taken note of Zinedine Zidane's gesture
11:11to do three days of community service within the FIFA humanitarian activities.
11:21However, after the evidence surfaced that Zinedine had been unfairly provoked by Materazzi,
11:28pressure was put on FIFA to consider punishing the Italian. Much to the delight of the French
11:33fans, Materazzi was also handed down a suspension.
11:37Due to the repeated provocations, Italy's Marco Materazzi will be suspended for two
11:47matches with his national team and he has been fined with 5,000 Swiss francs.
11:55Although it ended on a sour note, Zinedine's international career had been nothing short
12:03of extraordinary. While his name may always be tarnished by the incident that ended his
12:09dreams of a second World Cup, his ability to lead his team to victory in major tournaments
12:14by setting up and scoring crucial goals was second to none.
12:24With a brilliant football career already in the bag, Zinedine Zidane can now focus his
12:29attention on other pursuits. For many famous footballers, retirement brings with it a welcome
12:35opportunity to live the high life, going on never-ending holidays and spending some much-needed
12:40time away from the public eye. Zinedine likes to do things a little differently. His tough
12:46start in life has made him determined to give back to the community that has given him so
12:51much throughout his football career. This is no more apparent than in his capacity as
12:56a United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador. He took on the responsibility
13:01in March of 2001 and has since been involved in many initiatives to help countries reduce
13:07poverty. Prior to becoming a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, Zizou first collaborated with
13:13the organisation in 1999. Along with fellow football superstar Ronaldo, he launched the
13:19UNDP mobilisation campaign, Teams to End Poverty. The campaign encouraged individuals
13:25and businesses to get involved in anti-poverty actions. One year later, he held a charity
13:31match in Marseille with the French national team to benefit 60,000 children whose families
13:36could not afford a vacation. In December 2003, the Frenchman teamed up with Ronaldo again
13:43and launched the Match Against Poverty, in which the two stars, each captain an international
13:47team for a friendly match intended to mobilise the world in the fight against poverty. The
13:53charity game, which is held annually, raised over 550,000 euros in its first outing. Two
14:00years on, Zidane and Ronaldo held the third annual Match Against Poverty in Dusseldorf,
14:05Germany on December 22, 2005. Zinedine hoped that the match would encourage fans to give
14:12generously.
14:13I hope we will make it bigger each year. When we realise, like now in Germany, that
14:21the stadium will be full, that means people come here for one single objective, to see
14:25Ronaldo's friends and Zidane's friends. If they are going to the stadium, it is already
14:37a good act. It has also been five years that I have been involved with the United Nations,
14:49like Ronny. When we can give something every time, when we do something, even a gesture,
14:55that is what I find most interesting about being a UN ambassador. I think that ultimately,
15:11the most intriguing thing is when we realise that there are children in the world who still
15:15have nothing to eat. When we look at that, it is something we cannot let continue. Everyone
15:21at some level can do something about it.
15:30Held only a few days before Christmas, the Real Madrid superstars were determined to
15:34bring some Christmas cheer to children who desperately deserved it. The proceeds from
15:40the first two matches have benefited anti-poverty projects in Brazil, Comoros, Guinea-Bissau,
15:46Haiti, Morocco, Namibia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
15:51Ronaldo and Zidane have invited their friends. They play a match and they send a message
15:56to the world that they want to fight against poverty and that we can win the battle against
16:02poverty. They fight for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, which mean by 2015 we need
16:09to halve the hunger and poverty in the world. We can do it. That is the message that they
16:14sent and we are very grateful to them that they want to do that in their free time.
16:20Also taking part in the match were Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, Egyptian striker
16:25Abou Tariqa, German comedian Oliver Pocher, Brazilian Rivaldo and teenager Freddy Ardoun.
16:32I think we are happy to be welcomed by Marseille. I am from Marseille. I have always been a
16:42supporter of this team and always will be. I am happy to be here to share this moment
16:52with all these players who bring something to this project. As we said today with Ronaldo,
16:58it's true that everybody can bring something, even if it's not much. Everybody can do something
17:03for this cause and help make a better future for the world.
17:12More recently, Zinedine Zidane took his charity campaign to Thailand. In his first match since
17:22the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the three-time World Player of the Year took to the field against
17:28Thai pop stars and national team players in a light-hearted charity match. The superstar
17:35looked to have lost none of his touch as he effortlessly dribbled around the opposing
17:40defence. Despite the less than savoury end to his career, thousands of Thailand's football
17:46fans packed into the stadium to catch a glimpse of their hero. His charity efforts continued
17:53on to Cairo in Egypt. There he spent three days attending the opening of a home for street
18:00children and played in a charity soccer match with Egyptian youngsters. The trip was sponsored
18:05by the French food manufacturing company Danone, in cooperation with Egypt's National
18:11Council for Childhood and Motherhood, as part of an international project to help disadvantaged
18:16children. The project is intended to provide some of those children with homes, as well
18:23as basic health care, education and job training. Zinedine Zidane has flown all over the world
18:36spreading the football gospel wherever he goes. He has also travelled extensively in
18:41his capacity as an ambassador for good causes. He contributes to many charities, including
18:47those set up to help rebuild and renovate hospitals in Algeria that were devastated
18:51by a 2003 earthquake. In 2006, he went to Algeria, the homeland of his parents, to visit
18:59these hospitals. He was welcomed at medical centres in Thénia, Bourmédiès and Algiers,
19:05where he saw facilities funded by the charities he supports. In Thénia, 45 kilometres east
19:10of Algiers, he visited a children's hospital and was mobbed by fans who'd waited outside
19:16to see him. In Bourmédiès, he inspected a children's day nursery, where he thrilled
19:24the youngsters by taking part in a kick-about football match between two teams of children.
19:34Political strife is always a danger for Bourmédiès, on the edge of the Kabbali region, where Zinedine's
19:39parents come from. The area is rife with anti-government Islamist rebels. Although tension is at much
19:47lower levels than at the height of the bloodshed in the 90s, clashes between the army and guerrillas
19:53frequently occur in surrounding forests, hills and valleys. At Mostafa Hospital in Algiers,
19:59while visiting a children's ward, the star was told how donations of medical equipment
20:04had aided local people. He had helped to raise relief funds by taking part in a charity football
20:12match in France. The 2003 disaster was a heavy blow to Algeria, a country trying to pull
20:19itself out of years of violence, which has killed up to 200,000 people and also caused
20:25billions of dollars in damage. It was back in the 60s that Zinedine's parents moved from
20:33Bourmédiès to Marseille in France, where he grew up. He'd last visited Algeria in 1986,
20:43but his long absence hadn't dented his popularity in a country desperate for a hero.
20:52Although he wasn't actually born in Algeria, he is revered as an icon of success by the
20:57struggling nation, and his visit boosted morale in all of the towns he visited. Continuing
21:02his work with children, he has also travelled to Sakkabumi in Indonesia to meet the Danone
21:08Nations Cup Indonesian team. An initiative of Group Danone, the Danone Nations Cup is
21:16a world football tournament for 10 to 12-year-old children from 40 different countries across
21:21the globe. It comprises 40 national tournaments and a world final overseen by FIFA. Each year,
21:2840 teams qualify to represent their country at the world final. Zinedine Zidane is the
21:33event's highest profile supporter. His visit was also aimed at promoting the game to children.
21:39Although badminton is still the nation's most popular sport, the popularity of football
21:44is growing in Indonesia. The trip also coincided with Indonesia's hosting of the Asian Cup.
21:50During his visit, the French star took time out to play with the kids in a three-minute
21:55match of futsal, or miniature soccer, on a stretch of street in the Indonesian capital.
22:00Hundreds of people crowded around the venue, cheering on their hero by his nickname Zizou.
22:05He also met Jakarta Governor Suti Oso, who predicted that Zidane's visit would increase
22:11the confidence that Indonesia is safe to visit. On the last day of his visit to Algeria, he
22:16was awarded the Medal of National Merit, the highest distinction of the state, by Algerian
22:21President Abdelaziz Boutefika during an official ceremony at Palais du Peuple. President Abdelaziz
22:28presented him with the award in recognition of the example he sets for the country's youth.
22:33The medal was also proof of the high regard in which he is held by the Algerian people.
22:38For them, the medal was an opportunity to simply say thank you. And it's not just the
22:43Algerian people who would like to thank Zinedine Zidane. Fans all over the world are in debt
22:48to the Frenchman for a career that entertained football enthusiasts for more than two decades.
22:56The 1998 World Cup hero continues to lead by example, proving that fame and fortune bring
23:02with them the responsibility of becoming a positive role model.
