Sir Alexander Chapman Ferguson CBE (born 31 December 1941) is a Scottish former football manager and player, best known for managing Manchester United from 1986 to 2013. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest managers of all time and has won more trophies than any other manager in the history of football. Ferguson is often credited for valuing youth during his time with Manchester United, particularly in the 1990s with the "Class of '92", who contributed to making the club one of the richest and most successful in the world. Ferguson played as a forward for several Scottish clubs, including Dunfermline Athletic and Rangers. While playing for Dunfermline, he was the top goalscorer in the Scottish league in the 1965–66 season. Towards the end of his playing career he also worked as a coach, then started his managerial career with East Stirlingshire and St Mirren. Ferguson then enjoyed a highly successful period as manager of Aberdeen, winning three Scottish league championships, four Scottish Cups and both the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 1983. He briefly managed Scotland following the death of Jock Stein, taking the team to the 1986 World Cup.

00:00The 1990s in English football were remembered for the dominance of Manchester United.
00:14That success was largely due to the talent and vision of the Red Devils equally famous
00:18manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
00:21He took over the reins in 1986 and is Manchester United's second longest serving manager after
00:27another icon of the game, Sir Matt Busby.
00:31After Busby retired in 1969, none of his immediate successors proved capable of winning the league
00:37title for Man U.
00:40And although many supporters were initially unimpressed with Sir Alex Ferguson, he broke
00:44the drought and steered United into another golden era, etching his name into football
00:49history.
00:52Before finding success as a manager, he was simply a young Scottish footballer trying
00:57to make a name for himself.
01:03Sir Alex Ferguson was born on December 31, 1941 in Scotland's largest city, Glasgow.
01:13He made his debut at the age of 16 for amateur club Queen's Park in Scotland as a striker.
01:19As a professional, he eventually signed with Scottish First Division club Rangers FC.
01:24He ended up there after being traded from another Scottish First Division side, Dunfermline
01:29Athletic in 1967.
01:31His transfer fee of £65,000 between Dunfermline and Rangers set a Scottish record.
01:38He played for Rangers for two years, then in the 1969 Scottish Cup final, young Alex
01:43was blamed for a goal scored against Rangers, which cost them the match.
01:49He later conceded that the loss was a factor in his departure from the club.
01:55His early exit from Rangers coincided with Sir Matt Busby's retirement as manager of
01:59Manchester United, after overseeing the most successful era in the club's history.
02:11A fellow Scotsman, Busby had proved his mettle by building the winning team from scratch,
02:17and after the Munich air disaster decimated the side in 1958, he did it all over again.
02:22A new team, call them babes if you like, and that same conviction would overcome terrible
02:32injuries and from the terror of a snow-swept runway in Munich, would inspire, heal, encourage,
02:43challenge again, until the cup was won.
02:50When Alex Ferguson succeeded Ron Atkinson in 1986, after almost two decades of disappointment,
02:56he faced a mighty challenge, but he took inspiration from Sir Matt's example of how to resurrect
03:01the club.
03:02I probably brought a great deal of sympathy at the time, and from there on the romance
03:09is built, purely because of the way Matt rebuilt the team and won a European Cup in
03:151968 and did it the right way.
03:19Sir Matt had won five league titles, two FA Cups and one European Cup.
03:24Any new manager had the hard task of living up to the expectations that Busby had instilled
03:29in Man U supporters.
03:31I think back to what he actually started after the war, and of the vision to take Manchester
03:38United into Europe in 1956, it was beyond his time, I think, and it was before his time,
03:46and beyond everyone's thinking.
03:48That's the real link I've got with Sir Matt, in the sense that the years I've spent here,
03:5321 years, have been about achievement and about entertaining and about meeting the demands
04:00of the modern game.
04:02Much to the delight of United fans, Alex was to have a bright future with the club.
04:09Manchester United were the second last in the league when Alex Ferguson took over midway
04:15through 1986.
04:17He managed to bring the side back up to 11th by season's end and save them from relegation.
04:23The next season, he made several major signings, and the team finished second behind Liverpool.
04:31During his first seasons at the helm, he made several signings, and in 1989-1990, United
04:37won the FA Cup, despite their poor showing in the league.
04:41In December of 92, he made his most significant signing, acquiring Eric Cantona from Leeds.
04:47Cantona was the final piece of the puzzle.
04:50He became the star, as United finally broke a 26-year drought and became league champions.
04:57Their form continued into the 93-94 season, when they went one better.
05:02They won the double of the league and the FA Cup for the very first time in their 116-year
05:08history.
05:09More success came in the 95-96 season, when they again won the double.
05:12They were indeed a force to be reckoned with.
05:20In the 1998-99 Premier League season, Alex Ferguson's United won a tightly contested
05:25league title, and then secured their third double with a 1-0 FA Cup win over Liverpool.
05:31But soon enough, the possibility of an unprecedented treble entered the equation.
05:35Well obviously we are waiting for Ryan Diggs, that is a problem for us, because we don't
05:41know for certain what he's going to make, and I always like to have the team in my mind.
05:46But we're going to have to wait, and I don't mind that in this situation, because it can
05:52make a difference.
05:54The squad stayed remarkably calm leading up to the Champions League final.
05:59Yeah, I mean, it's exciting, I mean, you know, we've got the chance of winning three trophies,
06:05so the lads are relaxed, I mean, especially after winning the league as well.
06:10We can just go on and be a little bit more relaxed in the two games coming up.
06:16The stage was set for the last match of the season, the 1999 UEFA Champions League final.
06:24With the double in the bag, Manchester United needed to defeat Bayern Munich to complete
06:28the Holy Trinity, a feat which no English club have ever accomplished.
06:35Obviously there is a lot of pressure still on because people are talking about trebles,
06:38but we're just concentrating on winning each game and taking each game as it comes.
06:44Unfortunately, not everyone can be picked, and Ferguson had the task of deciding who
06:49was in and who wasn't.
06:51It's quite a major decision about who I pick, because we're not all available, as it always
06:58happens in cup finals, you have to disappoint people.
07:06The game was to be held in Barcelona on the 26th of May, a day which would have marked
07:11Sir Matt Busby's 90th birthday.
07:16By now, Ferguson had won five league titles, the same amount as Busby.
07:21If he and Manchester were able to secure the Champions League trophy, Alex Ferguson would
07:25become Manchester United's most successful manager.
07:30United or Bayern?
07:31Bayern United.
07:32And the score for the game?
07:34I think about 2-1 United, Beckham and Dwight Yorke.
07:41The team arrived in Barcelona in great spirits, answering questions from the press and fans.
07:48The team had never been more closely scrutinised, or under more pressure.
07:52Ferguson managed to keep himself and his side calm, at least on the surface.
07:57What about the flight?
07:58Fantastic.
07:59Wonderful.
08:00And you had a top flight, and there's a top performance on Wednesday?
08:04I hope so, I hope so.
08:06And Scherringen start the game?
08:09I've not picked my team, I'm picking Wednesday morning.
08:15And how do you rate the Germans for the final?
08:18They're quite good on the decisive match.
08:20They're a great team, yeah.
08:21But so are we, so it should be a good match.
08:28It's a big game, a very big game, and I cannot afford to be sentimental about my own position.
08:37So I'll have to concentrate and focus on the game, and the European Cup final, don't get any bigger than that.
08:45The fact that United had made the final was impressive enough.
08:48They had landed in a very tough group, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
08:53They made the final with just five wins in total, despite not losing a game.
08:58No team that had not won their league the previous season had ever won the Champions League.
09:04United would not have qualified under the old qualification rules, but this was a year for firsts.
09:12The United team was full of stars.
09:14Among the line-up were David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Dwight York.
09:18However, they were hurt by the absence of Paul Scholes and Roy Keane due to suspension.
09:25Despite the blow, United fans still had faith their team would prevail.
09:30Do you think you're going to have joy or disappointment in the end?
09:33Joy.
09:34Joy? Who's your favourite player on Man United?
09:37Keane.
09:38Keane. He's not playing, so...
09:40Beckham. Beckham.
09:42I don't think United are ever scared of anybody.
09:44The Germans are always good in any competition, especially when they get so far to the final.
09:48So, like I said, as long as we don't get to penalties, I think we'll be well.
09:51I don't think we've ever won any penalties against the Germans.
09:55We're going to do it. We are the team. We are definitely going to win.
09:58Aren't we, lads?
09:59Yes!
10:03After such a huge build-up, the day finally came.
10:06And to the delight of Manchester United fans the world over,
10:09they won the Champions League and secured the coveted treble.
10:13Fans couldn't contain their delight and celebrated till the early hours of the morning.
10:18It was a milestone not only for Manchester United, but for English football.
10:23It took only six minutes into the highly anticipated match to yield a score.
10:28Unfortunately for Ferguson, Ronnie Johnson clumsily fouled Bayern striker Karsten Janke just outside the area.
10:34Free-kick taker Mario Basler kept the ball low and curved it around the United wall to give his side a handy 1-0 lead.
10:42Bayern started the second half even stronger,
10:45until Ferguson made the critical move of bringing on Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
10:51With the match seemingly slipping away from them,
10:53it took until injury time for the Red Devils to score two quick goals,
10:57both from corners timed at 90-36 and 90-17.
11:02The scorers were the two substitutes, Sheringham and Solskjaer.
11:06United had stolen an amazing victory.
11:13Alex Ferguson was knighted on the 12th of June 1999,
11:17in recognition of his services to the game, and he wasn't finished yet.
11:20United lost none of their steam, taking the next two league titles to win three in a row.
11:27They won another a few years later, as the club started to rebuild a new team for a new generation,
11:33waving goodbye to the old guard.
11:37The new generation, they are very strong, but they have a lot of things to prove.
11:45They have a great team, strong, they can do it, but they need to do it.
11:58A key to the potential success of the new look team,
12:01was instilling in them a sense of personal accomplishment.
12:06Sir Alex wanted the team to stop living in the shadow of the most successful era of the club's history.
12:12He knew that the current squad had to create their own history, and keep their eyes on the future.
12:20I think the team of today is the team of today,
12:23and they don't need to worry about the past, or need reminding of the past.
12:28I've seen it many times in video, when Manchester United TV was on, many times.
12:34So I don't think it's lost on anyone on our team,
12:38but even more important is what they can shape themselves in their own history, hopefully.
12:45I think they're good enough to do that.
12:49He brought in young star players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo,
12:53who would have great impact for United.
12:58Fans who cheered for heroes such as Beckham, Keane and Scholes,
13:01found something new to cheer about in the young up-and-comers.
13:07Club icon Roy Keane left United in 2005, in what was a very transitional year for the side.
13:13The same year they signed Michael Carrick, who turned out to be a worthy replacement for Keane.
13:20With a host of young stars in the side, it was time for United's resurgence.
13:26They buy young players like Rooney and Ronaldo,
13:29and Ferguson is the kind of manager who can help the greatest player with a lot of expense,
13:34and he's also the one who can help the young players.
13:38Not all managers can do it, and he can do that,
13:42so he can find the balance on the pitch too,
13:48so you can have a very strong team.
13:50And I think they are stronger this season, at the moment, and for a long time.
13:58United bounced back in a big way in the 2006-07 season,
14:01winning the league title for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
14:05United were back to their best.
14:07They won the league again the following year.
14:11Since we've won the championship, we've had 10 days of good preparation.
14:15Probably the preparation has helped the staff more than the players.
14:19It was a long season, and we all feel the strains and stresses of it.
14:26In the 07-08 season, Manchester United again challenged for the Champions League trophy.
14:31They faced Chelsea in an all-England final.
14:34I think we're in the best shape tomorrow, and hopefully good enough to win this trophy.
14:45The Champions League final against Chelsea was the first all-English final in the history of the European Cup.
14:51United eventually prevailed 6-5 on penalties,
14:53after extra time could not separate the sides who were tied at 1-1.
14:57Continuing their dominance, United won the league in 2008-09,
15:02making it another three titles in a row, and mirroring their dominant performance in the 90s.
15:07With his 11th Premier League title, added to five FA Cups and two Champions League trophies,
15:13Sir Alex Ferguson had cemented his status as Manchester United's most successful manager.
15:19The most successful manager in Manchester United's history doesn't have a lot of time to spend away from the game.
15:25In between strategising for upcoming games, training, travelling and recruiting,
15:30Sir Alex has to endure the stress of watching his precious side play.
15:35No doubt the number of hours he devotes to his beloved football
15:39have put a fair amount of pressure on his marriage to his long-suffering wife, Kate.
15:43Although by now, she must be well used to it.
15:46The pair, who married in 1966, have three sons together.
15:51Mark, who was born in 1968, and twins Darren and Jason, who were born in 1972.
15:57Darren has followed in his father's impressive footsteps,
16:01and currently manages second-tier club, Preston North End.
16:05Under his management, he has been involved in a number of projects,
16:08and currently manages second-tier club, Preston North End.
16:12Under his management, the club is currently winning 42% of their games.
16:17In 1999, following the Red Devils' record-breaking season,
16:22Ferguson heard that he was to receive a knighthood for his services to football.
16:26The news didn't come as a complete surprise.
16:30This is seen by the many millions who follow football and who are enthused about football
16:35as being a good reflection on the Labor Party.
16:39It's part of a mutual adoration society.
16:47To the delight of thousands of fans, as of mid-June 1999,
16:52the treble-winning manager down at Old Trafford would now be referred to as Sir Alex.
16:57He first received royal recognition back in 1983,
17:01when he was handed an Order of the British Empire for his services to football.
17:06Twelve years later, he'd been honoured again with a CBE.
17:11On accepting his knighthood, Sir Alex became the only English football manager
17:16besides Matt Busby to receive the honour.
17:19Sir Matt's knighthood had come after Manchester United won their first European title in 1969.
17:25Despite not guiding the Devils to the treble that season,
17:28Busby had accomplished the impressive feat of putting together a Europe-beating side
17:32after the horrific Munich Air Disaster.
17:38Sir Alex became the 11th person to be knighted for services to football.
17:42Since then, three other members have joined the elite group,
17:45which boasts 14 of the most influential figures in football since Sir John Charles Clegg was knighted in 1927.
17:56During his time at Manchester United, Sir Alex has managed some of the greatest players of the modern era.
18:02Early on in his career at Old Trafford, he worked alongside the likes of Eric Cantona and Roy Keane,
18:07who were soon followed by the next generation of stars,
18:10including David Beckham, Gary and Phil Neville and Paul Scholes.
18:16Today, it's the brilliant striker with the incredible work ethic that gets the fans to their feet.
18:21Wayne Rooney's aggressive game style, powerful strikes and precise headers
18:25have helped keep Man U at the top of the EPL.
18:32I work hard and try 110% in each game.
18:36You've got to do that and I think the fans see that and appreciate that.
18:42The Crocs-death-born forward began his career at Everton before being transferred to Manchester United in 2004.
18:49Still only 18 years old when he left Everton,
18:52his transfer of around 28 million euros broke all records for a player under 20.
18:58Now in his mid-20s, Rooney can still remember his childhood ambition
19:02striving for greatness and dreaming of playing against the world's best footballers.
19:08When I was a kid I used to just love playing and practising and just playing football really and I used to enjoy it.
19:14I used to want it, I used to want it bad and I think that's where I am at the moment.
19:20I think for any young kid, if they do that, they'll have a chance.
19:25Now in the eighth season of his professional football career, Rooney has played over 350 games
19:30and scored more than 140 goals.
19:34He is just one of the many great footballers that Sir Alex has had the pleasure of managing at Manchester United
19:40and he has no illusions about how lucky he has been.
19:44I've been very, very fortunate.
19:46I've had some great players with a wonderful heart.
19:48I mean, their names have trot off your tongue like Canton and Mark Hughes, Roy Keane, Brian Robson
19:56and now we've got this wonderful kid, Wayne Rooney.
19:58I mean, just the heart.
20:01And I think that when you sum it all up, you can talk about his skill, you can talk about his pace and his ability to beat a man
20:10but the thing that will always come out is because he's got the heart to do it.
20:17Despite Rooney's brilliance, it was Portuguese attacking midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo
20:22who stole most of the headlines during his six seasons at the club.
20:25Scouted by Sir Alex himself from Sporting Lisbon, it didn't take the young Ronaldo long to find his feet in the EPL.
20:33Although many of the Manchester United fans were up in arms when Sir Alex handed the teenager the famous number seven shirt
20:40Cristiano didn't let the moment get the better of him.
20:43And despite his inexperience in senior football and the fact that he was still a teenager
20:48Sir Alex was more than happy with his progress.
20:55Well, I think that we've seen the progress of Cristiano this year and it's been absolutely fantastic.
21:07I think he's, in my mind, at the moment, he's the best player in the world.
21:12And I think, you know, you can't say that lightly given there's some fantastic footballers there.
21:17In no time at all, Rooney won the respect of the once disapproving fans
21:22and was well on his way to becoming one of the greatest players in world football.
21:27Especially Cristiano, he's winning games on his own.
21:31This season he's been unbelievable and, you know, I think at the minute he's by far the best player in the world.
21:38During his time at Old Trafford, Cristiano scored once every 2.5 games
21:43including 42 goals from 42 appearances in 2007-2008.
21:52Alex Ferguson's run of success at Manchester United is unmatched by any other manager in the history of English football.
22:01Since the inception of the EPL, Man U have claimed 11 out of a possible 17 Premier League crowns.
22:08On top of this, he's won five FA Cups, including the 89-90 win which arguably saved his job.
22:15Four League Cups, two UEFA Champions League titles and a FIFA Club World Cup.
22:21Overall, he has led Manchester United to over 30 titles.
22:26Individually, his record run at Old Trafford has won him an enormous trophy haul.
22:32With 58 individual honours already to his name, Sir Alex is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated managers in football history.
22:40His many honours include being inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
22:46He has been named the Anzac d'Or Coach of the Year on two separate occasions,
22:51the Premier League Manager of the Decade and Premier League Manager of the Year nine times.
