00:00Liverpool's historic Willis Organ at St George's Hall will soon receive a much-needed refurbishment.
00:06An appeal to repair the organ has received £20,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund
00:13via the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. This means repair work can take place on the
00:18tuba mirabilis, often described as the voice of the organ.
00:22The pipes are to be repaired by specialist local technicians, David Wells Organ Builders
00:28who are based in Kirkdale, meaning the tuba mirabilis stop sound from the instrument will
00:32be returned to its former glory. The stop chest, which produces a sound, will also be
00:37restored with the replacement of the internal leatherwork and magnets.
00:42The work is expected to take around eight weeks and involve the removal of delicate
00:46pipework. Following completion of the work, the whole organ will be tuned.
00:51This work coincides with the SGH 170 programme of events, which celebrates the Grade 1 listed
00:57building's 170th anniversary.
