Spain announced an extra €50 million to help the Canary Islands currently overwhelmed with more than 5,500 unaccompanied migrant children and teenagers.

00:08many of whom are unaccompanied minors arriving to the islands, Spain's Minister for Territorial
00:13Policy said.
00:14Ángel Vido Torres made the announcement after Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited
00:19the Spanish archipelago to speak about possible solutions to the crisis with the region's
00:23president.
00:24Torres said the leaders would work towards creating new legislation, forcing other Spanish
00:39regions to accept the unaccompanied minors, thousands of which arrived to the Canaries
00:45as orphans.
00:47These unaccompanied minors automatically become wards of the state.
00:52The archipelago has become a main point of entry for irregular migrant arrivals sailing
00:57from West African nations into the European Union.
01:02The local government says it has capacity to look after 2,000 minors, but is currently
01:08caring for more than double in overcrowded shelters.
