CGTN Europe exclusive: Inside the Bibby Stockholm – an asylum seeker's story

  • last month
The UK’s previous Conservative government hired the controversial barge Bibby Stockholm to house more than 400 asylum seekers. The new Labour government will close it down – but has pledged to deport thousands more migrants and people who fail asylum applications.

CGTN’s Iolo ap Dafydd went to meet one of the people on the Bibby Stockholm facing an uncertain fate.

00:00Life in BB Stockholm Baj is just really bad. It's not that good.
00:05There is a few good things about it, like the people that are working there and they use their time to keep us safe and healthy.
00:16But there are so many bad things about it because we don't have that good food that we like to eat.
00:23We don't have so many activities. We are in small rooms. Our home is on water actually.
00:30So it's really difficult to be in there and it feels just like a prison to us.
00:35And when you are living in prison, you are depressed, you have anxieties, you have panic attacks and mental health problems.
00:44These are the real problems that are happening in BB Stockholm Baj and there is no solution for it.
00:52I've been on the Baj for more than three months and now I have got my interview date.
00:59So after that and after I got accepted as an asylum seeker and a refugee, I can live as a human in a safe country.
01:10The riots that happened in the UK just make asylum seekers feel unsafe and we are afraid.
01:19We are really afraid of what will happen to us.
01:22Yes, they can easily send them back. They are going to put them in an airplane and they are going to send them back.
01:28But it's going to start a big suicide for them because when they arrive to their country,
01:35their government are going to arrest them and who knows what they are going to do to them.
