Government: Energy bills hike 'deeply worrying' for families

  • last month
The average household energy bill is to increase by £149 from October after Ofgem said it was increasing its price cap as homes approach the winter months. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said the announcement “will be deeply worrying news for many families”. He blamed the price cap hike on the “failed energy policy we inherited, which has left our country at the mercy of international gas markets controlled by dictators”. Report by Covellm. 00:00I know this will be really worrying news for lots of families who will face even greater
00:05struggles this winter, and it's a direct result of our country's exposure to international
00:12gas markets that are controlled by dictators, and that is a legacy left to us by the last
00:18government.
00:19That's why this government has a plan to do something about it.
00:23Our mission for clean, homegrown power that we control in this country, and it's why we've
00:30hit the ground running in just seven weeks, consenting new solar power, overturning the
00:35ban on onshore wind, precisely to give our country the energy security we don't have
00:40at the moment.
00:42And this government will also do everything it can to protect bill payers, reforming the
00:46regulator, so it's a strong champion of consumers, making standing charges fairer, and increasing
00:53funding for energy efficiency so people can cut bills.
00:57But this is obviously really worrying news for lots of families in our country.
01:00Look, I am incredibly sympathetic to all of the people who are going to be struggling
01:06this winter.
01:07I'm not just sympathetic, we're going to act.
01:09We will be doing everything we can, working with the regulator, working with the suppliers
01:14to remind them of their responsibilities to the most vulnerable in our society, and this
01:20government will leave no stone unturned in the months ahead to do everything we can to
01:26protect bill payers.
