00:00So we do have this three test match series starting here at Emirates Old Trafford, then
00:15we move to the capital for two games, Lords on August 29th and then starting on the 6th
00:21the Oval.
00:35Let's just confirm the England side and have a look at the balance of the side because
00:38Ben Stokes is actually going to join us in due course, he's just having a chat there
00:41with Stuart Broad that again with Stokes when he's not there he doesn't balance the side.
00:46So what they've done is this, they've bumped Chris Wokes up to 7, Jamie Smith to 6.
00:50Liverpool and Sri Lanka are here in Test Cricket for the first time now in 8 years,
00:56so welcome to them.
00:59The international summer here at Old Trafford or the Test Match Summer, Australia still
01:03to come.
01:04Huge applause as the local boy Jimmy Anderson rings the bell for the start of this game.
01:14So both teams happy with the toss, Chris Wokes will take the new ball, finished strongly
01:19at Edgbaston although there was a slight worry over a quad injury for him there.
01:24Madushka looks to take first ball.
01:39England wearing black armbands of course now some wonderful reflections.
01:44Timothy Karunaratne a very experienced player, very good record over a long period of time.
01:49Oh he's nicked that hasn't he, surely yes, there was a little sound, a short ball, Karunaratne
02:01looking to pull through the leg side and just gets a very fine edge through to Jamie Smith.
02:07He's a bit unlucky actually because if he gets any more on that.
02:11Karunaratne a little bit surprised I think, first real short ball from either of England's
02:16opening bowlers.
02:18The Surrey duo combine to get rid of Karunaratne for 2, 6 for 1.
02:26He's got Kuselmendis in his sights now.
02:42Got him, yep, good catch Joe Root, that full length that we were asking for from Chris
02:50Wokes brings some late movement and a loose drive from Madushka.
02:56England have finally worn down the patience of both Sri Lankan openers.
03:02Just gently arcing away, begging to be driven.
03:06The movement was there, Joe Root cupped it to his chest.
03:10Madushka goes for 4.
03:12Angelo Matthews to the middle and in good time.
03:22Oh now, oh he's given him, height might be an issue here, it certainly looked very straight.
03:29Wokes was a bit wide on the crease, it nipped back.
03:32Angelo Matthews leaving the ball alone, has been trapped in front, given out, he's going
03:37to review it.
03:38Ball tracker coming up now, original decision is out.
03:42The ball is pitching outside of, the impact is in line, wicket's hitting.
03:47Paul is still at the original decision, standby.
03:50And Sri Lanka tottering, 6 for 3.
03:53Experience of Dinesh Chandimal coming in for the experience of Angelo Matthews.
03:59Matthews 110 tests, Chandimal 80 test matches now.
04:04Now as we saw in the West Indies series, it's that balance between attack and defence.
04:11West Indies at times went in their shell completely and were going nowhere.
04:18Played late and just opened the face of the bat.
04:23Kusumendis moves into double figures.
04:30And the second boundary of the morning.
04:32That one a bit more streaky, an edge, hurries away for 4.
04:41Hats leg side, that was the first one he strayed onto the pads and he's just tickled that fine
04:46Chandimal for his first boundary.
04:53Nicely played, just opened the blade and gets his third boundary, all in that area behind
04:59square on the offside.
05:05Driven nicely, Kusumendis has looked to attack, he's looked positive.
05:13Chandimal and Kusumendis are going to be in for some of that.
05:21Chandimal on the floor, he's got a little bit of that fresh paint that's just been put
05:25down by the ground staff on his arm now.
05:30What a beauty, now has it come off glove or forearm, I think he's walking.
05:42That is a really fierce bit of bowling by Mark Wood, right on the thumb and a simple
05:50catch that's left as the ball just balloons up, but Sri Lanka 40 for 4.
05:57Dananjaya Da Silva, the captain of Sri Lanka, comes in with protection on his forearm, sharp,
06:05very good shot.
06:09Delivery had no venom, but it was very efficiently punched down the ground and the running in
06:16the end was good, so good aggressive running.
06:23Width and absolutely hammered, if Chandimal is going to get any width, that's what he's
06:28going to do.
06:35Using the pace and there's plenty of it from Mark Wood to run that down to third man for
06:41four.
06:47Just worked nicely with the pace and the space on off or outside off stump.
06:52Oh, that's kept really low and that is unfortunate.
07:00Chandimal just stands with hands on hips, Bashir stands with hand over mouth.
07:06Three seconds, two, one, and they're going to go upstairs.
07:12Original decision is out.
07:14Ball pitching outside off, the impact is in line and wickets hitting.
07:19Paul still with the original decision of out, standby.
07:23Dinesh Chandimal departs for 17, Sri Lanka 72 for 5.
07:28Vindu Mendes, 250s, 200s, ever seen a ball like that day one, session one at Old Trafford
07:40Broughty?
07:41Oh, and he's nearly played on, that's some fancy footwork there, one to get the ball
07:49to avoid the stumps and then secondly to get himself to avoid them as well.
07:53Even though he might not have meant it, a wobble seam again, getting that at pace,
07:59especially when you're expecting it to be test match length all day long, can really
08:03surprise a batter.
08:04But again, high pace never seemed to bother Dhananjay De Silva in his entire career, he's
08:09very graceful.
08:10That's well played and it needed to be because it was absolutely honing in on leg stump.
08:20In York, I always think this is an underutilised delivery in test cricket, something you rarely
08:27expect and the more you can ball, especially at high pace, even with the new ball where
08:31you get late swing as a result.
08:34Yeah, we've already seen it so far today and it's a shot that he enjoys playing, Vindu
08:43Mendes.
08:44You can see him trying to play that late scramble seam coming in, playing just a little bit
09:06too far behind rather than meeting the ball.
09:10He goes for a well-made 12, not enough in terms of where Sri Lanka is placed.
09:20Rides the ball up and over, handy runs.
09:24Off the back foot, square drives it for four.
09:37What sort of a shot was that?
09:38Well, it's a shot to get you out.
09:41He got in a right tangle there, did Jai Surya, so the short ball ploy has worked spectacularly
09:48well.
09:49It's a fabulous delivery, as you say, in two minds whether to, or what to do with it at
09:56all.
09:57I think in the end he may have sort of been trying to fiddle it over that guy on the gully
10:02and given us a no ball.
10:03So he already had two deliveries above shoulder height.
10:08That was the third and that's a no ball.
10:15Nicked it with the ball, pushed up, excellent bowling from Atkinson, hostile by and large
10:21with the exception of that no ball, which was marginally above shoulder height.
10:25It was short ball, pushed him back, pushed him back, length outside off stump, which
10:30he's nicked, excellent.
10:33That pace does funny things.
10:34A couple of bounces and watch the footwork of Jai Surya.
10:38There's a shimmy with his feet because he was expecting it short again.
10:42Jai Surya has to make the walk off again.
10:45That's twice in three deliveries.
10:47He's facing Atkinson now.
10:51Will play some shots.
10:53Potts can do nothing about that.
10:54That's powerfully struck.
10:58Well, Dananjaya is happy to trust his partner and that single takes him to 50, a good time
11:06too.
11:0756 balls.
11:0815.50 to go with 1,200, so he's been in good form recently, got the tempo right, as those
11:18stats tell you.
11:19A strike rate of nearly 90, five boundaries in there.
11:23Played really well.
11:25Cut away beautifully, waited, waited, waited.
11:32Lovely shot.
11:36Lovely shot.
11:37Only a hint of width from Wood and Ratnajka has punished that through point.
11:46A very solid blow from Dananjaya da Silva.
12:00Down the pitch and over mid-off this time, so back-to-back boundaries for Sri Lanka's
12:06captain, Dananjaya da Silva.
12:11Straight up the chimney, duck it in pursuit, as is Wood, neither of them will get there.
12:16Trying to get the depth perception of where the ball's gone.
12:21Luckily for Sri Lanka, it's just fallen in no man's land.
12:31It's well played, really well played by Ratnajka.
12:35And that's a fine shot.
12:44It's round the wicket, if you drag it down, that can be the result.
12:48Excellent shot again.
12:50Oh, that's wonderful.
12:56Gone, got him.
13:02Off spinner to right-hander with a leg slip.
13:05They're in business.
13:07The consequence of not taking that single, the ball before perhaps, but just a slightly
13:11quicker delivery from Bashir, who's pushed it through.
13:14It's been a wonderful innings from Dananjaya da Silva, the team really needed it, 1-7-4
13:20and Sri Lanka are 176-8.
13:30Nicely played.
13:31Saw him on furler, good pull shot.
13:39High he goes, he gets it over Wokes, and that is a terrific way to bring up your first test
13:45match half century.
13:46He's had a fantastic day so far.
13:49Milan Ratnajka got his cap from Kumar Sangakkara this morning.
13:54He's now leading some lower order resistance for Sri Lanka, and he goes to a maiden half
13:59century.
14:03Because of what Kay Cross was saying about how much he's such a leg stump guard, he's
14:07very difficult to get LBW.
14:09Yeah, that guard he's taken just eliminates the LBW dismissal.
14:16Now, has that carried?
14:21Don't think it has.
14:22It's short of Dan Lawrence diving to his right.
14:271-7-4-8.
14:33Up and over, will it go all the way?
14:37Think it has.
14:38They're going to have a look at it.
14:39Umpire already signals six.
14:41I think he's got a wonderful swing of the bat.
14:46Seeing that frame from side on there, it's just really fluid motion that's just allowed
14:51him to time that ball.
14:58That's a very pleasing shot from Ratnajka again.
15:01He has shown real batting ability on his first innings in Test match cricket.
15:10Swung away into the leg, and other than some pigeons, there's nothing out there.
15:16And it does go for four.
15:23Goes again.
15:24This time doesn't get it over.
15:25England do have the breakthrough.
15:26It's a decent catch from Chris Wokes, running back, taking the ball high above his head.
15:31And Bashir's persistence has paid off.
15:34Pope's persistence has paid off.
15:37The previous delivery that it was because Pope had the field up, kept the mid-off for
15:43mid-on up and said, go on, go over the top.
15:45He went over the top.
15:47Didn't go for four.
15:48Didn't get it.
15:49Tried to repeat the dose.
15:50And Bashir has earned that, and the move to over the wicket has eventually brought him
15:57the dismissal of Ratnajka, who played quite superbly on Test match debut for 72.
16:06Smoked down the ground.
16:09A slog suite that has gone through.
16:11Very straight mid-on for four.
16:17Oh, run out.
16:19Goal.
16:20I reckon that's it.
16:23Come a long, long way down.
16:39Sri Lanka's innings is over for 236 from 74 overs.
16:47Ollie Pope has asked for the heavy roller.
16:50Dan Lawrence and Ben Duckett have trotted off to the dressing room to get ready.
16:54Will they have to come out and bat?
16:56Pretty horrible for Sri Lanka at the start.
16:58They were six for three after seven overs, but then the lower order showed good resistance.
17:03Led by their captain, Dan-Andrea de Silva, who really shaped up nicely for his 74.
17:08So far in this Test match, Sri Lanka 236 all out.
17:11Yeah, the bowling for England was largely excellent.
17:13Wokes looked back to his very, very best with the new ball at the end, which brought the innings to a close.
17:22Opened the bowling on four occasions, but in the number two position.
17:26This will be the first time with the first over in his Test match career.
17:31Last innings for Ben Duckett.
17:33He opened up with Ben Stokes.
17:35So he's gone through a couple of opening partners over the last Test or so due to that injury to Crawley.
17:47A teasing line first up, nicely flighted.
17:54Up and over, and there is your answer.
17:56We're not leaving balls at the start of the innings, whether it's seam or spin.
18:02Four half centuries, best of 91, so he can bat. Everyone knows that.
18:12And off the mark straight away. The best way to do it.
18:19And a favoured shot of Ben Duckett.
18:22Works very well square of the wicket to spin.
18:25And just like that, once in a while, pick off a boundary by Jasuria.
18:34Searching for something extra, something more.
18:38And unfortunately, the umpires have come together and decided that that will be it.
18:45And a little bit of that is because of Sri Lanka wanting to bring seam and pace on.
18:51So the umpires have said that's not possible.
18:55With the poor light at the moment.
18:57And they've decided, let's get the pace on and let's get off the ground.
19:01Come back and try and swing the ball tomorrow.
19:03Well, if you've joined us back end of today, day one of the first Test between England and Sri Lanka.
19:10Sri Lanka won the toss, elected to have a bat first.
19:13And it was the captain leading the way, Milan Ratnayake.
19:17His first ever Test match has been selected for his bowling, but it was his batting that stood out.
19:2272 next to his name.
19:24Chris Wokes had a double wicket maiden to begin with things, picked up three for likewise Shoaib Bashir.
19:30And half an hour ago or so, England bowled Sri Lanka out for 236.
19:36And have started with 22 for none before bad light has stopped play.
19:52you
