00:00Just one month after saying yes, Marlene decided to list her wedding gown online, hoping to
00:07get back half of what she paid.
00:10I'm not emotionally connected to the dress, so I want to keep my husband and not the dress.
00:18For me it's easy to make maybe someone else happy with.
00:24Marlene's dress is likely to be sold in no time.
00:27The number of brides-to-be searching for pre-owned wedding gowns online has risen five-fold in
00:32the past five years, according to Austria's largest online marketplace, Wilhaben.
00:38Pre-owned bridal dresses cannot only be found online.
00:42In some Austrian bridal shops, up to two-thirds of dresses sold are second-hand.
00:48While sustainability is one part of the equation, the rising cost of living seems to be the
00:54more dominant factor.
00:56New wedding dresses start at $1,000 and usually have to be altered to fit the bride, meaning
01:02hundreds of dollars on top.
01:05More and more brides decide for a second-hand dress, because new dresses are way more expensive
01:10than the last years.
01:12Despite the cost, many women still prefer to be the only one to ever wear their wedding gown.
01:18Would you buy a second-hand bridal dress?
01:20No.
01:21For me, I would like to buy a new one, not second-hand.
01:25Why not?
01:26It doesn't matter if it's second-hand or not, does it?
01:28Maybe if I can try it on, yes.
01:31And it's not only dresses that are being resold.
01:33This year, Austrian goldsmiths are seeing a new trend towards recycled rings, with customers
01:39bringing in old jewelry to be made into wedding bands, putting brides well on the way to fulfilling
01:46the tradition to wear something old, new, borrowed and blue.
