00:00What's up everyone?
00:08I'm here in London's Piccadilly Circus, their version of Times Square.
00:14And I'm going to be taking the London Underground or the Tube to Paddington Station.
00:20Today's date is Saturday, November 4th, 2023.
00:24The time is about 4.30pm.
00:27Temperature is 53°F, 12°C.
00:37This is what the London Underground looks like.
00:47This one serves the Bakerloo Line and the Piccadilly Line.
00:51Here the lines are named, even though they're colored, no one really refers to them by color.
01:09And just as luck would have it, we have a lot of delays and closures today on many of
01:14these lines.
01:15I don't see Bakerloo on this list though.
01:21But it does seem quite busy here in the Tube Station.
01:34The method of payment is Oyster Card, which you can get from one of the ticket machines
01:45for £7 and you can reload it.
01:48Or you can use a contactless payment option or your smartphone if it has Apple Pay, Google
01:53Pay, etc.
01:59And fares are based on distance traveled.
02:01If you travel within multiple zones, then you're going to get charged a higher fare.
02:08Also there's peak fares versus off-peak fares.
02:11It can get quite confusing, so it's best to refer to the Transport for London website
02:17to figure out what the fare you're going to pay is.
02:21There's also a cap on how much you pay each day, as long as you use the same payment method.
02:32There's a few machines that are down right now.
02:47This is quite a crowd going in.
02:51Even more crowded than the New York City subway for paying into a gate.
02:56And I don't think there's any kind of special events today.
03:12They have more gates to get out than to get in, which is probably a good thing.
03:22Sometimes what I've experienced on the New York City subway, where I'm from, is that
03:27the MTA will actually open the gates to let people in, just to get the crowd going.
03:35And don't even have to worry about the payment.
03:40It's important to tap in and tap out, otherwise the Transport for London might charge you
03:46the maximum fare.
03:50All this due to broken machines to my left.
04:08I just paid with my credit card, just tapped it on the reader.
04:14I need to get the Fakerloo line, not Piccadilly line, to Paddington station.
04:44I'll need to
05:14go northbound towards Harrow and Weldstone.
05:33This is actually my second experience riding the London 2.
05:36The first time was on the Circle line, which is coded yellow.
05:42And that one's kind of deceptive because it's not really a circle, there's actually
05:47a spur of it that goes past Paddington to Hammersmith.
05:58It even says Paddington here, so that's good.
06:11Hopefully the train comes soon.
06:41It sounds like the train is coming soon.
07:09Looks like a fairly old train.
07:12Pretty wide doors, or in this case, one door.
07:18That's a saying we're going to be hearing a lot, mind the gap, mind the gap.
07:33It's quite busy in this train, and it doesn't seem like there's any air conditioning.
08:01Wow, even the lights turn off here.
08:04That's something I haven't experienced on the New York subway since the early 2000s.
08:14On the number 7 line, the Redbirds.
08:25No smoking, which is good.
08:32There is a fan system here, but to be honest, it doesn't really work that well.
08:41As you can see, there's different zones for the stations.
08:46Paddington is the last station on zone 1.
08:53That's 7 stops I need to go.
09:00There's also priority seating.
09:09This seems to be one of London's older lines, the Bakerloo line, because the Circle line
09:14I rode yesterday had newer trains.
09:41There's Oxford Circus station.
09:43For those of you who are unfamiliar, a circus is a road junction.
10:13It is a smooth ride though, but it's not that comfortable in here.
10:38There is no AC in here, so it's kind of stuffy.
10:48This is the winter time too, well not winter, it's autumn, and it's already uncomfortable.
10:56Can you imagine the summer?
11:07Also, the radio system here doesn't work that well, you can barely hear.
12:37Baker Street station.
13:07No wonder why this train is so old.
13:27Looks like that information sign says this station opened in 1863, one of the original
13:33stations on the world's first metro line.
14:03One of the things I really like about the London Tube is how clean it is compared to
14:31the New York subway.
14:37It's actually pretty disgraceful to call the New York subway clean.
14:59Let's see how comfortable these seats are.
15:03It actually has a nice cushion, it's firm.
15:11Pretty cool.
15:21I wouldn't want to sit on that seat for a long time though.
15:25Pretty comfortable.
15:29Got two more stops.
15:35Try to pronounce that stop without knowing how to pronounce it.
15:43I believe it's Marlebone.
15:59Let's see if we can hear what the announcement says it is.
16:09Oh wait, we already left that station.
16:19Check it out!
16:21Have fun!
16:37Wow, arguments on the tube.
16:41Uh oh.
16:45That's not good.
16:55Next stop is Paddington where I'm getting off.
17:03They said they have a tiny little map here, but still.
17:07Yui got confused looking at it.
17:11And this is just the central London map.
17:17The larger map is even more complicated.
17:47Mind the gap please.
18:15Pretty smooth ride on the London tube.
18:39If you would like to go over the street, you have to follow the sign that says,
18:43way out.
18:45And it's funny, they still use the word exit, but only for the emergency.
19:01It's a pretty deep station, Paddington.
19:27If you need to transfer, just follow the directions.
19:55There's a pretty busy station, it's also where the Heathrow Express rail terminates.
20:07That directly connects to London Heathrow Airport, the busiest airport in the UK.
20:23Okay, so, need to tap to exit.
20:37Okay.
20:43That was a simple ride on the London tube.
20:50Anyway, if you want to see how to use the ticket machine, maybe a contactless payment isn't right for you.
20:58You can use contactless to pay as you go at the adult rate, no need to top up your Oyster card or buy a ticket.
21:05Let's just say we want to go back to where we came from.
21:11Piccadilly Circus.
21:17It's cheaper to use a contactless card or device to pay as you go at adult rate for your journey.
21:23You see, even the screen is telling you it's cheaper.
21:27Here it's £6.70.
21:30I think pay as you go is like less than £3.
21:35What's a day travel card?
21:37Oh, as many trips as you want for today.
21:42£15.20, so they cap you.
21:46Even up to zone 6.
21:55So, pretty cool.
22:07For me, I don't need any more transit cards.
22:11I have a huge collection already.
22:16And here's Paddington Station.
22:47Actually, wait.
22:51Yes, hey.
22:58He's actually the first person to call me by name in London on this whole trip.
23:17Paddington Station.
23:23Let's get out of this rail station.
23:28To the street.
23:36This goes towards the Elizabeth Line, which is the newest line on the system.
23:43Opened in 2022, named after Queen Elizabeth.
23:48That's what that was.
24:09Alright, everyone.
24:12I hope you enjoyed that ride on the London Tube.
24:19Hit that like button, subscribe, and I'll see you next time.
24:24Bye, everyone. Take care.
24:48Oh
