00:00Sean, first and foremost, what did you make of that?
00:19Certainly by half time, horrible games of manager when you're doing everything you
00:22asked as a team, and you concede such a, well a good goal from their point of view of course,
00:28on the break you know they're capable of that, but a pretty soft goal from our point of view
00:31in possession at their end of the pitch, a soft pass and they counter and you're 1-0
00:36down against the run of play. Certainly I thought their way of performing in the first
00:41half was at least decent and as good as I was hoping for. I thanked them in so many
00:47different ways, but as we know, one of the biggest challenges there is them finding them
00:50clinical moments, which we didn't do. And the start of the second half I thought was
00:54very similar. A big, big decision on the penalty, I mean, I can't really work it out,
00:59we go to these meetings, we've just literally been told that the bar's going to be incredibly
01:03high now for the referee to make a decision. He makes a clear decision, he's at a perfect
01:07viewing point, and lo and behold he's called over to overturn the decision and you're like,
01:12well what's the point of having a high bar then? Because when you look back at it, they've
01:14said he's Donovan's foot lands, or apparently one of the official lines has been Donovan's
01:19foot lands on their players. For one, he doesn't obviously want to put his foot on their players
01:23and their player's out of control on the floor and drags his foot along with the top
01:28of his foot and the bottom of Dom's, so that clearly pulls him to the ground. And I'm like,
01:32well, what is a pen then? Because that's contact in the box and a pen, and we've all seen the
01:36tiniest, you know, someone tread on your toe and they give up, haven't we? So I think we're
01:40all confused by it. There's no reason for confusion, if he lets the referee give that,
01:44the referee gives it, I don't think there's too many complaints.
01:47How disappointed though were you with how things unfolded after that decision went against
01:50the players?
01:51Well, yeah, I mean, you can see from a poor decision from a pass, obviously, it's very
01:55disappointing. And then you get someone sent off. So by then it's very difficult. The whole
01:59feeling of everything changes, you know, it's quite apparent. And it's a difficult thing
02:04then, you know, but I mean, it's unfortunately, I had these moments early last season, head
02:09scratches where you go, well, first half's a very good performance in so many ways, statistically
02:13on the eyes, apart from them clinical moments, and they're so important. And we got punished
02:17for mistakes until our own mistake for the sending off, you know, young, he knows he
02:21should have that and not bring it down. Yeah, so we got punished, it's simple as that. So
02:27you come away feeling flat and disappointed in a performance at halftime, you go, yeah,
02:31actually, that's what I wanted to see. Them turning points are massive, them decisions
02:35are so, we've spoken about endlessly, the details in the Premier League are far more
02:39important than any other division.
02:40You spoke about the first half Brighton perhaps being a little bit more clinical when they
02:43went further forward. Was there any dilemma in your head when you were setting up the
02:47Everton side just about how to try and find a bit more clinicism in your own ranks, you've
02:50got Illman and Dye, you've got some on the bench?
02:51Well, the clinical moment in football is the most important moment. And usually, in my
02:52experience, developing that is the hardest thing. We've spoken about that before. If
02:53it was that easy, every manager in the country will be developing players who are clinical.
02:54Or they'd be very cheap, which we know they're not. We're selling them out. We're selling
02:55them out.
02:56So, yeah, I mean, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
02:57it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
03:08it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
03:16it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
03:22it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
03:28it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
03:34it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
03:40the
04:03No it's not a concern of course, it's fair to say there's a reality to that and the
04:13reality is you know the the hardest thing to affect is goal scoring
04:16everyone knows that that's why goal scorers are so expensive that's why
04:19they're in demand not just goal scorers but wide players clinical players
04:23they're very hard to come by so we've been in a situation this summer we think
04:27we've brought some in who can be more effective they can learn about the
04:30Premier League particularly in Illy and Jasper but they haven't experienced the
04:35Premier League so it's my job to give them a chance when they are ready to
04:38actually go and perform and at this moment I still think there's a bit of
04:41work to be done and a bit of awareness for them to understand about the
04:44Premier League it's not just about service we look at the players to be
04:55productive their selves you know it's you know it's not just about one player
04:59but since I've been here it always seems to be Dom but you know there's
05:02lots of other players on the football pitch but all players don't have that
05:04clinical edge we've got so many good positions our wide players getting good
05:07positions today can you find that pass can you find that finish midfield
05:12joining in when possible you know set pieces I thought we were good again
05:16today and you know an offside stops us having one and the delivery was good and
05:20so no we want effective players from all over the pitch you can't just rely on
05:23one player done very well I thought he's had a really strong preseason he's
05:29probably one out the new players as you know he has experienced the Premier
05:32League he's been around it he's experienced it and also the championship
05:35and he looks more game ready for what the Premier League is likely to offer
05:38higher physicality we know higher need to work both ways you know don't just
05:42attack him at defending defending attacking and find that mixture I thought
05:46it was excellent I think he's had a really strong preseason I was really
05:48pleased for him because it looks like he's a young player who's really enjoying
05:51playing there is no point unfortunately because the way that it's changed is we
06:02go like so we go to these meetings you give feedback and it more or less stays
06:05the same and today was a good example of that you know they said their words not
06:08mine they're gonna set about really really high and we're gonna let the
06:11referees referee which apparently all the stakeholders they call them all
06:15agreed to I don't know they are because I never actually name them but apparently
06:19they do and I think we all kind of agree somewhat you know today's one for me
06:25leave it alone you know he's got caught whatever way you look at it he's got
06:29caught on his foot in the box he's brought him down the players out of
06:32control all the manager will tell you defenders last ditch don't go don't go on the
06:36floor you know try and stand up when that happens I think it's a safe decision
06:40with the referee but someone's decided it's not so I don't understand this high
06:44I think one thing I must say I think I hope you'll all agree what about the nine
06:47minutes added on it's not the referees fault but I but if someone gets injured
06:51in that nine minutes in a game like that that's clearly got away I mean you're
06:54looking for a miracle at that stage from coming back from 3-0 down to win 4-3
06:59I find that bizarre and they you know it's got to be some adjustment to that
07:04because I just think even their manager looking as their players coming off and he's like
07:07cramp but if that turns into hamstring injury he'll be going what is the point
07:10because he couldn't make a change obviously what's the point I find that incredible in the
07:15modern game you know one week it's health and safety they're playing too many games
07:17next week let's keep them out there needlessly no I don't understand that
07:22Sean you spoke a bit there about how you kind of ease new players in particularly
07:27those that have come from other leagues I'm just wondering is that the reason
07:31why potentially Jake O'Brien for example didn't start over Michael Keane
07:35no the reason why I didn't start is because Michael Keane's had a very strong preseason
07:38he's been very unfortunate to get injured at Preston but he's had a very strong preseason
07:41and he's very experienced Premier League player Jake hasn't got that experience
07:45but we think he's a very good player and I think he'll learn quickly he's come in
07:49he's been very open-minded about you know the nuts and bolts if you like how
07:53quick the game is he found that in the previous performances but no he's a very
07:56good player we think he'll develop into it and just on the right back situation
08:00I was I think all three first-choice kind of senior options potentially out
08:04now for Tottenham might you have to look into the under-21s or do you see
08:08options in the first-team squad that could fill in? I think it's a big ask for the
08:11under-21s to dive straight in but we'll see we're certainly gonna have to look
08:16at the best available options that we can work with well certainly for the
08:21next week you never know obviously two weeks time the Cup game in between but I
08:24think it's there's a maybe but I think it's unlikely that we'll be able to get
08:28to the point of risking someone next week's it would be a risk. Is that why Mason Holgate
08:33potentially came on later? Yeah I mean you know the squad is what it is
08:37currently we've been a bit unfortunate we have added to it we've tried to find
08:40a balance and we've been unfortunate with the injuries we've got none of them
08:43particularly, well UCAS is longer to be fair none have been drastic
08:47injuries but they're all a couple of three weeks and you know that can cost
08:50you at this early stage of season when you've got the games coming and you've
08:53just finished pre-season.
