00:00Convicted of corruption last year, MUAR MP Syed Sadiq Syed Abdul Rahman is awaiting his
00:08day in the Court of Appeal and wants his appeal heard soon.
00:12Speaking to FMT, he said he wants to clear his name through the legal process as he deeply
00:17respects the integrity of the court.
00:19The former youth and sports minister, however, said the appeal cannot be heard yet as the
00:24high court in Kuala Lumpur has not issued its written judgment to justify his conviction
00:28and sentence.
00:29He added that a fifth case management will be held in the Court of Appeal on September
00:3320th.
00:34Meanwhile, lawyer Bestin Tan from the legal firm that acts as Syed Sadiq's solicitors
00:39said the firm had on March 18th written to Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid to obtain the grounds
00:44of judgment but has not received a response.
00:47A court practice direction states that a trial judge must provide the written judgment within
00:51eight weeks of an appellant filing his notice of appeal.
00:55Meanwhile, lawyer G. Subramaniam Nair said a criminal appeal cannot proceed without the
01:00written grounds as the appellant can only file a petition of appeal stating where the
01:04trial judge erred in fact and law after obtaining the grounds of judgment.
01:09On November 9th, Syed Sadiq was sentenced to a total of seven years in prison and fined
01:1410 million ringgit after being convicted of abetting criminal breach of trust, the misappropriation
01:19of assets, and money laundering.
