00:00From brilliant solutions solving the problem of a missing actor, to on-set injuries being
00:05masked by subtly masterful camerawork, these are just a few of the Star Wars scenes that
00:10were secretly deceiving you.
00:12Gareth here from WhatCultureStarWars and here are 10 Star Wars Scenes You Didn't Realize
00:17Were Tricking You.
00:1910.
00:20Adam Driver Recorded His Last Few Lines in His Closet – The Rise of Skywalker
00:26It's not exactly a secret at this point that a great many changes were made to J.J.
00:30Abrams' The Rise of Skywalker flick over the course of the ninth and final Skywalker
00:34saga entries creation.
00:36What you may not have been aware of though is the fact that some of the final lines ever
00:40rewritten before being let loose by none other than Kylo Ren himself, Adam Driver, weren't
00:45actually uttered on one of the film's sets or in front of any camera at all.
00:49In fact, according to the movie's sound editor Matthew Wood, Driver was tasked with
00:53recording his last lines as a masked Ren within the comfort of his own Brooklyn home.
00:58But with the actor not exactly coming equipped with his own state-of-the-art ADR booth, Wood
01:02would confess,
01:03I went to Driver's house in Brooklyn.
01:05I ended up opening up one of his closets where he had all of his suits, and I just pushed
01:09the suits out of the way and said, hang your head in here.
01:12The glamour of filmmaking, eh?
01:159.
01:16Mark Hamill's Injury Was Hidden in the Trash Compactor – A New Hope
01:20The sequence depicting Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Princess Leia all attempting
01:25to survive being slowly crushed to death within a trash compactor was actually subtly disguising
01:30a rather hilarious blunder as it goes.
01:32In a bid to make himself authentically look as though he'd just survived being strangled
01:36by the creature within the Death Star's trash pit, Mark Hamill actually intentionally
01:40made himself red-faced during the shooting of the scene.
01:43However, being the committed soul fans knew him to be, Hamill went a little too far and
01:48actually ended up bursting a blood vessel in his eye.
01:51Knowing they couldn't afford to pause the shoot, though, Lucas instead had his crew
01:54carefully shoot around Hamill's cock up until it had healed.
01:57So that's why Hamill is largely shot from only one side of his person during this intense
02:01turn of events.

02:04Han Solo's Hoth Jacket Was Actually Brown All Along – The Empire Strikes Back
02:09For the longest time, many a Star Wars fanatic had blissfully assumed that the furry jacket
02:14sported by everyone's favourite smuggler on the freezing cold planet of Hoth was obviously
02:18of the blue variety.
02:19Hell, even Hasbro even went out of their way to unleash a toy that depicted Han Solo decked
02:24out in a coat of this colour back in the day.
02:26With that being said, though, there were still large portions of the fanbase who were adamant
02:30that Harrison Ford's wisecracking personality was actually kitted out in a brown parka during
02:35these frosty scenes.
02:36Well, after years of debate, the truth was finally uncovered during a Discoveries From
02:40Inside Costumes Revealed featurette for Attack of the Clones' digital HD release.
02:46According to said behind-the-scenes footage, the jacket was shown off in all its very much
02:49brown glory in the costume department, with not a single glimmer of blue in sight.
02:557.
02:56Peter Cushing Was Cruel But Rarely Uncomfortable – A New Hope
03:01It may actually come as a bit of a surprise to hear that the legendary Peter Cushing was
03:04actually storming around the Death Star in a pair of carpet slippers for the majority
03:08of his time on set.
03:10With the Grand Moff Tarkin icon boasting some rather large feet, the actor would later reveal
03:14in a rather old interview that they hadn't got time to have my boots made for me.
03:18Then after strutting around in a pair of stock shoes, the agony Cushing felt led to the thespian
03:23requesting for Lucas to shoot him from the waist up for the rest of his time on screen.
03:28From that point on, Cushing was slipped into some anything but intimidating carpet slippers,
03:32for everything from his destroying of Princess Leia's precious Alderaan, to his many exchanges
03:37with the menacing Darth Vader – a fact that will likely change the way you look at this
03:40unsettling portrayal in A New Hope forever.
03:436.
03:44Porgs Were Actually A Way Of Disguising A Problem – The Last Jedi
03:49Whether you love them or loathe them, there's still little arguing with the fact that The
03:52Last Jedi's porgs definitely stole more than their fair share of headlines in the
03:56lead-up and in the wake of Episode VIII's release.
03:59Yet the act's own natives weren't actually part of Rian Johnson's original Star Wars
04:03plan out of the gate, with creature concept designer Jake Lunt-Davis eventually informing
04:08StarWars.com that their inception was brought about thanks to a real-life stumbling block.
04:13With the location of Skellig Michael used for Acto being home to hundreds of puffins
04:17that couldn't be physically removed from the wildlife preserve, the director thought
04:20of a genius way of disguising the fact his set had been overrun by the feathered creatures.
04:25As Davis would explain, you can't remove them, you physically can't get rid of them,
04:30and digitally removing them is an issue and a lot of work, so let's just roll with it,
04:34play with it.
04:35And so I think he thought, well that's great, let's have our own indigenous species.
04:39So there's a good chance that whenever you spot a porg on Acto, there's likely a real-life
04:43puffin hiding underneath it, wondering what all these cameras and Jedi were doing in the
04:47back garden.
04:495.
04:50Three Wookies Came From One Suit – The Phantom Menace
04:54The Galactic Senate Chamber held within the Senate Rotunda saw a number of surprising
04:58races make an unexpected cameo over the years, and among the likes of ETs, a sojourn species
05:04popping up in the chamber in The Phantom Menace, fans were quick to spot Chewbacca's beloved
05:08race of furry warriors by the name of the Wookies.
05:10However, what wasn't as easily spotted was the fact that this was actually just one actor
05:15dumped into a single Wookie suit.
05:17Said performer then executed three different variations of the scene, and the costume's
05:21hair was slightly adjusted each time to fool audiences into believing a number of furry
05:25extras had been brought in for the shoot.
05:28Also, instead of creating a brand new Wookie costume from scratch for this fleeting cameo,
05:32Chewbacca's costume from the original trilogy was dusted off for the sequence, with Creature
05:36Effects supervisor Nick Dubman later noting,
05:38"...when the shots were put together, we ended up with three different Wookies out
05:41of one suit."
05:434.
05:44Christopher Lee Used a Double During Most of His Fight – Revenge of the Sith
05:48Despite coming in at the ripe old age of 79 around the time of Attack of the Clones shoot,
05:53that still couldn't stop the unstoppable Christopher Lee from getting in on some of
05:56the sword-fighting action when it came to his climactic showdown with Anakin Skywalker,
06:01Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda.
06:03Away from the close-up beats that saw Lee's Count Dooku very much swinging his lightsaber
06:06at the likes of Ewan McGregor and co, though, episode two also relied on a stunt double
06:11for some of the more impressive manoeuvres seen in the wider shots of the duels.
06:14Then, said performer's face was ultimately digitally replaced with Lee's in post-production.
06:19With Lee racking up a few more years in the lead-up to shooting on the follow-up, this
06:22digital replacement technique was once again utilised as a way of convincing audiences
06:26they were actually seeing the proficient swordsman strut his curved lightsaber stuff.
06:313.
06:32Carrie Fisher's Hair and Clothes Were Digitally Altered – The Rise of Skywalker
06:37News of Carrie Fisher's tragic passing in late 2016 cast understandable doubts over
06:41the future of her equally beloved character of Leia Organa in a sequel trilogy that was
06:46well underway at that point.
06:47Refusing to simply have the character be dispatched off-screen, though, J.J. Abrams instead opted
06:52to recycle footage he'd already shot of the unmistakable princess during the Force
06:56Awakens for the Force-sensitive figure's emotional last showing in the series.
07:00Along with this utilising of old Fisher material, the whizzes at ILM were able to combine the
07:04live-action shots of Fisher's face with a completely digital character.
07:09This ultimately aided the team in giving Leia a look that was completely distinct to episode
07:139, adding a little extra grey into her latest legendary hairstyle and a whole new costume
07:18in post-production in their bid to stave off the weird visual of her appearing exactly
07:22as she did in episodes 7 and 8.
07:24And it is a testament to ILM's remarkable work that next to no-one realised said icon's
07:29final hairstyle and outfit of choice were entirely computer-generated.
07:322.
07:33Matt's Paintings Enhance an Empire – The Empire Strikes Back
07:39While the likes of Disney Plus' The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi were
07:43all afforded the luxury of the state-of-the-art LED volume when it came time to add some
07:48cinematic depth to many a space-age scene in recent times, the folks behind the first
07:52few flickers of this galaxy far, far away had to think outside the box.
07:56Seen in the elegant horizon of Bespin's Cloud City, and within an Imperial hangar
08:00boasting an embarrassment of Stormtrooper riches, utterly mesmerising Matt's Paintings
08:05were often used to fool fans into believing they were witnessing a larger-than-life set
08:09being captured on film, brilliantly lacing the feature players and moving spacecraft
08:13into the scenario in post-production.
08:16The fact some of the most impressive locations ever committed to the Skywalker saga were
08:19handcrafted by any mortal, though admittedly freakishly talented, human still needs to
08:24be seen to be believed.
08:271.
08:28Pedro Pascal didn't physically appear in one episode, The Mandalorian
08:32It may have been a little bit disheartening to realise that his big break in the Star
08:36Wars universe would largely be playing out underneath a clunky Beskar helmet, but the
08:40reality of Pedro Pascal being hidden for much of his time in the Din Djarin saddle did actually
08:45come in rather handy when he suddenly found himself unable to rock up on set due to some
08:49prior commitments.
08:50As revealed by The Mandalorian Chapter 4 director Bryce Dallas Howard to Vulture, the star of
08:55the show wasn't available to shoot on her Sanctuary episode due to the fact he was in
08:59rehearsals for King Lear on Broadway, as you do.
09:02This had next-to-no impact on the shoot itself, mind, with Mando Stundouble's Brendan Wayne
09:06and Lateef Crowder both pitching in to bring the titular Mandalorian to life over the course
09:11of the series.
09:12Wayne was able to easily embody the presence throughout Chapter 4, while Pascal would also
09:16add his dialogue into the mix later down the line.
09:19Simply put, and as Howard herself would summarise, this mysterious Mandalorian is a real collaboration.
09:26And that is our list!
