00:00Salim Javed stepped on many people's feet, but to begin with, those feet should not have been there.
00:13He was a regular seducer.
00:30What was that secret formula that made Salim Javed, Salim Javed?
01:01They don't make men like these anymore, let me tell you that.
01:05Javed Sahab, I would like to ask you a question.
01:09What is it about your partnership that made it so special?
01:13I mean, ultimately the result, but you see, it was not planned, it was not organized,
01:21it was not on a very conscious level decided that we'll do that, it just happened.
01:27Incidentally, the first job I got in film industry was with Mr. Kamal Nairi for 50 rupees,
01:33then I jumped to 100 rupees in Mr. H. M. Sagar's film, where I was an assistant director.
01:39Besides that, I was writing dialogue also, because no other writer was willing to write the dialogue of Sir H. D. Lutera.
01:46So we went to Jhopatpatti with Mr. M. Sagar, there a writer refused.
01:52Then he asked me to write the dialogue.
01:55It was not a matter of choice, but it was the most important film of my life, Sir H. D. Lutera,
02:01because that is where I met Salim Sahab.
02:05Salim Sahab was leading a romantic in that film,
02:11and I used to write the dialogue, and he used to trouble me so much, the director and producer,
02:17that I decided that after this I won't write.
02:20But the courage and appreciation that Salim Sahab gave me constantly,
02:27that if you can write such a dialogue in this film, then what will you do if it is a good film,
02:32you become a writer.
02:34So this whole thing ended.
02:36After that it was a coincidence that I came to Bandra, to a friend's house,
02:40and I used to live with him, he used to pay the rent, and I used to live.
02:45So Salim Sahab's house was nearby, so I started going to Salim Sahab's house,
02:50with all my love.
02:51One thing was that his food was ready.
02:54Then we used to sit and think of stories.
02:58One day we were sitting, and the same Mr. Sagar, who had made Sir H. D. Lutera,
03:04who had introduced us, he came, and he said that there is a short story,
03:09and if you make a screenplay for it, then how much money will you give?
03:14So he said, 5000, so come.
03:17I missed a heartbeat.
03:19So I said okay.
03:21So in 14-15 days we made the screenplay and gave it to him.
03:24This was ghost writing, we didn't have a name in the film.
03:27But there was a Sudhir Wahi there, who is still in touch with you.
03:31So Sudhir Wahi, he knew that it was our work.
03:35So he said, go to Sippy Film.
03:37So we thought, Sippy Film is so big, where will they give us work?
03:40But one day, we didn't have anything to do in the afternoon, so I left.
03:43So we talked there.
03:45So he said, you both come.
03:47I said, we were working together, we just finished.
03:49He said, you both come.
03:51So we both went.
03:52And then we got work there.
03:54So we met Rajesh Khanna there.
03:57Rajesh Khanna told us to write a screenplay with Hathi Miri.
04:02So there was no such day,
04:04there was no such time when we both decided that we should become partners.
04:09It just grew.
04:11It happened like that.
04:13And then you know, I didn't have to tell you, the rest is history.
04:18The rest is history.
04:19Thank you so much, Mr. Javed, for taking us on that little journey.
04:23And there's a lot more in the docu-series, I can promise you.
04:26At this point...
04:27He's sitting comfortably in front of you.
04:31Mr. Salim, he has shared so many memories with us.
04:35If you have any memories from that time that you would like to share with us,
04:39we would love to hear them.
04:45What is it?
04:47Hello.
04:49Hello.
04:52Hello.
04:53Are you okay?
04:54Yes, I'm fine.
04:56We were going to a film premiere.
05:04Javed and I were in the same car.
05:09And a producer and director was going in front of us,
05:13who had made a film 20 years ago.
05:17So the kids came and started knocking on the door.
05:22Mr. Salim Javed, Zindabad, Salim Javed, Zindabad.
05:26So I gave them a 10 rupee note.
05:29And I told them to take it.
05:31And the director who was in front of them,
05:35I told him to say Zindabad, Zindabad.
05:42So as soon as he started saying Zindabad,
05:46they turned around and looked.
05:49They looked and saw.
05:51I told them that they know me.
05:54And that's how we got into the car.
05:58When the security came out in the interval,
06:00we were looking for them to see where we were.
06:02After that, we saw them.
06:05So we turned around.
06:08As you said, people know you.
06:13So after a while, they came to us and stood up.
06:17Thank God, it's been 20 years since I made a film.
06:22Your kids know me.
06:47No, no, I must in all honesty accept that
06:50Salim Javed has stepped on many people's feet.
06:53But to begin with, those feet should not have been there.
07:04Mr. Salim, we would like to hear from you.
07:08After the rest of the food?
07:14It's lunchtime.
07:18Let's hear it from the director.
07:33It comes from there.
07:35They think that they have gone mad.
07:38It wasn't them who went mad.
07:40It was them who were going mad.
07:42And they were going mad in a good way.
07:44Because they were getting hit after hit.
07:46And those with whom they couldn't work,
07:49for dates, or didn't like the plot,
07:52for whatever, didn't like the face,
07:54didn't like the character,
07:56they decided that they were going mad.
08:00But actually, it wasn't them.
08:03Those who told them this,
08:05they were going mad.
08:09Just might be each of you hit me.
08:12Not like that.
08:13We'll start with you, Manish.
08:16Should we just do it the other way round?
08:19I've already said mine,
08:21which is, I still don't take money thrown away.
08:25The biggest mistake of Don's enemy is,
08:28that he is Don's enemy.
08:31Well done.
08:32Namrata.
08:33I have a mother.
08:34That's great.
08:36Aren't we grateful?
08:37Reema.
08:38The one who is scared, thinks he is dead.
08:40Yeah, baby.
08:41Ritesh.
08:42I was going to say, I have a mother,
08:44that had also reached the Oscars.
08:46But, I'll say,
08:47how many men were there?
08:49Fantastic.
08:50Two governments.
08:51Salman sir.
08:52You won't welcome them.
08:53What happened?
08:59Should we ask the two of you,
09:01what your favorite lines might be?
09:04Would you like to tell us your own line?
09:06Then that might be a bit weird.
09:08Yes.
09:10Now let me tell you that,
09:13we are going to write now.
09:16I have spoken to him,
09:18that we should write one more picture together.
09:27The line starts from here.
09:34Even in those times,
09:35our prize was more.
09:37In this time, it will be a lot more.
09:40You can see that.
09:43But, one thing,
09:44our children, all our children,
09:46said very good things about us.
09:49But, the truth is,
09:50they were very young.
09:51How much do they remember?
09:52How much not?
09:53We were older,
09:54we remember more,
09:55about these children.
09:56When I met Salim sir for the first time,
09:59Salman was not even one year old.
10:03Sixty-five.
10:04He was not one year old.
10:07And, the way he looks so handsome now,
10:10this is not something new.
10:11He was beautiful since childhood.
10:13So, he was an exceptionally good-looking child.
10:17And, there was a black and white picture
10:19in your living room.
10:20In a small frame.
10:22I don't know where Salman is now.
10:25Then, all these other children
10:27were born in front of me.
10:29Okay, what is amazing,
10:31that Salman,
10:32today he is the he-man,
10:33he is the dashing hero.
10:35He was extremely shy,
10:37very quiet,
10:39he was a quiet child.
10:41The naughty child,
10:42he must have been sitting there.
10:48He was a regular seducer.
10:51Whoever used to come to Salim sir's house,
11:02You don't know what all you did
11:04after six years.
11:06Whoever used to be Salim sir's friend,
11:09he used to make a special relation with him.
11:12He used to sit quietly.
11:14And, he,
11:15after getting along with him,
11:17people used to think that
11:18he is an amazing child.
11:21And, he had a strange habit
11:23when he was very young.
11:24His hair could never be scattered.
11:26He used to comb his hair.
11:28A six-year-old child combing his hair?
11:30I have never seen this.
11:32So, his self-love was amazing.
11:35Self-love, I love it.
11:37So Gen Z, Mr. Javed.
11:39I love you.
11:40Zoya, I am going to take this to you.
11:42Unless Salim sir would like to say a few words.
11:44Gen Z was there from that time.
11:46The way they have lived their lives,
11:48today it is very difficult for Farhan and me
11:50to live our lives the way
11:52they have lived their lives.
11:54So, there is a lot of negativity in this.
11:56At that time, they didn't care.
11:58Today, we are made to feel that
12:00we should care,
12:01when we should not actually.
12:07There is only one word which is badass.
12:09And, I said that on stage.
12:10Shoot me.
12:11I don't care.
12:12But, that's who they were.
12:13Zoya, I would love for you to tell us
12:15what your favorite dialogue is.
12:17And, Farhan.
12:18We are back there.
12:19Actually, I am going to go with what Reema said.
12:21Which is Gabbar's dialogue.
12:23Jo dar gaya, Samyo mar gaya.
12:25Absolutely.
12:26Thank you very much.
12:27Farhan.
12:30My favorite dialogue.
12:31I have actually made a film.
12:32I have watched that film so much.
12:33Don ko pagadna mushkili nahi naamumkin hai.
12:35Was my favorite dialogue.
12:36But, I think to just paraphrase one line
12:38that they have used in a film.
12:40And, that question came up earlier also.
12:42Lunch kab hai?
12:43Lunch.
12:44Lunch kab hai?
12:46Well, lunch will happen.
12:48Minus.
12:49Minus.
12:50Yes, sir.
12:51Sorry, sir.
12:52Minus.
12:53Mere paas maa hai.
12:55Woh bhi do.
