PH records decline in poverty incidence in 2023
Transcript
00:00Last year's documented number of families who consider themselves poor or not having enough
00:06income to meet their minimum food needs hit a shade under 11 percent according to the Family
00:11Income and Expenditure Survey, a welcome sign of the poverty rate incidents in the country,
00:17dipping that our Rod Laguzad makes sense of in this report.
00:23The country recorded a decline in poverty incidents last year based on the data released
00:27by the Philippine Statistics Authority. According to the Family Income and Expenditure Survey,
00:32the recorded poverty incidence among families is 10.9 percent in 2023,
00:37which means 109 in every 1,000 families were considered poor last year.
00:41PSA National Statistician and Civil Registrar General Undersecretary Claire Dennis Mapa said
00:46that this is the percentage of families with inadequate income to meet their minimum basic
00:51food and non-food needs. This is lower compared to 13.2 percent recorded in 2021. And when it
00:56comes to the number of poor Filipinos, it went down to 17.54 million from 19.19 million in 2021.
01:03Despite that, our food threshold has increased substantially due to food inflation.
01:24He added that this is the number one reason why the poverty incidence declined.
01:28The national average poverty threshold for a five-member family in the year 2023
01:33is P13,873 per month. According to the PSA, this is the minimum income needed to meet the basic
01:40needs to not be considered poor where a large portion of it goes to food. Ray, a Paris vendor,
01:45stressed that the high prices of goods is a struggle for his family as they try to maximize his income.
01:59The food threshold is recorded at P9,581 or at P64 per person for a family of five for the whole
02:11day. The PSA admitted this may not be enough for Filipinos. But Mapa explained that when it comes
02:16to computation of poverty and food threshold, the basic needs are being considered based on the food
02:21menu prepared by the experts. With this, the PSA is looking for adjustments or changes in the
02:26methodology being used.
02:28This to reflect what is happening on the ground, whereas the PSA expects that by next year,
02:56adjustments will be made. Rod Laguzed from the National TV Network for a new and better Philippines.
